is that the same Owen who was on tv yesterday saying he hopes to play for England this season and looking forward to winning something with Man U ?

But in truth is more likely to spend six months of the season on the treatment table...

a MASSIVE signing possible, icant say anymore, not 100% or anything but seriosuly huge.

Depends what you call 'massive'. For me Charlie Austin would be a 'massive' signing, but some people are saying Michael Owen!?

let the speculation roll, its all good fun!

We must be looking for at least 4 players to sign if you take into account what AP has previously said.He has commented on a back up striker for Ricky, the need for more quality and back up in central midfield and we obviously need a right back.I think he will either bring back or replace Antonio aswell. If Bart and Connelly don't sign we will need at least 6 players so I can't understand the people on here who say we don't need any signings or just 2!!?

It would be good to have the rb and cm in next week for the Switzerland tour.Pre season has started by the way. They were back on thursday and I could see them all training as I drove past Staplewood.

With these signings added to a strong squad I would put us as clear favourites for promotion. At the moment both Huddersfield,Sheff Wed and Peterborough would run us close with their current squads(a lot is likely to change yet though)

If noone is interested in Boyd ,Maclean and Mackail-Smith from Peterborough or can't afford them then maybe we should dismantle their squad as surely we are a better bet than Peterborough!?At the moment Peterborough have kept all their best players and strengthened.

It would be good to at least start to get some players in as AP said we would be stronger not weaker (which we currently are as we have no back up in various positions and no rb) at the start of next season.Still plenty of time but would be nice to hear of some signings sooner rather than later

Are you sure?

He was last season too

Didnt Reading take up the option of a further year on Antonio? Was either because Reading want to make use of him now he has proven he can be useful or they thought we were going to want him and if they didnt take the extra year then they would have got naff all for him. Taking the extra year they are probably waiting for us to make an offer.

Would we go back for him or look to get someone better in?

I thought we had an option on Pappa too so letting him go back suggests we didnt take up that option?

Has anyone actually said that we don't need any signings?

The common consenus seems to be that we need at least 4 or 5 players. A right back clearly; maybe also a backup RB; a strong CM; Antonio or an adequate replacement; and a CF.

That it hasn't happened yet is, in my eyes, not all that surprising. Ideally we would of course have all of our players right now, but transfers don't necessarily work that way. I and others have already pointed out that, if transfers haven't been made by 1st August, then will be the time for concern (despite the fact that the transfer window is open until the end of August). We certainly need a right back before we start playing friendlies, Harding can cover the position but is clearly just cover and not a long term option. And the more time/games that new signings can get with us, the better.

I personally think we will sign an RB plus at least two other players by the start of the season, with the rest of the signings being made in mid to late August as long term loans and other players become more available.

Where is this from? If accurate it also suggests Mills and Holmes and not considered first team and are on their way?

From 606:

Hello,

Just thought I would let you know that Saints are hoping to have 2 players on trial for the games against Winchester City, Havant and Waterlooville, Basingstoke and Farnborough Town. I know the guy who does the programmes at Winchester City and asked for the names of the players playing in the game. The club where asked to cater for 18 players plus coaching staff but could only name 16 players as 2 where trialee's.

I'm sure this will start a few rumours flying about. Apparently of the players is under contract at another club but they have allowed him to go on trial with Saints on the basis the player is brougtht if it's sucessful, and one is supposidly a free agent. I really don't know who they are. Might be worth people keeping their eyes peeled for news.

I think if we don't make signings in time there can be justified criticism.

As pre-season hasn't started yet any criticism is premature and completely irrational.

And lol@ your last line.

Laugh as loud as you want.

The petulant foot-stamping and aggression on here if anyone dares to question the "In AP we Trust" whip is hillarious.

Just read that but the guy who named the team says that Pulis is no longer at the club. Funny how he's listed and picturedon the OS in his shiny new red-sashed shirt.

Noticed that myself, but the news regarding the trialists seems genuine to me? May just be 2 youngsters, but you never know.

Back up for who,or what?

Car park attendant,or doorman?

Lol

TBF, IMO it is a long shot, but we worked on Rickies fitness and he has been sensational.

He is big and strong, and scored goals for Northampton. Plus he was a fan favourite.

It could work, he is available on a free.

Good post. The "July 1st" brigade have now shifted the goalpost to August, bizarrely.

Really, the lack of ability or willingness to criticise the club is reminiscent of the worst extremes of Communism...

That is seriously, seriously mental.

Some people on a web forum saying we should back the current management and not criticise them for a lack of signings yet is "reminiscent of the WORST extremes of communism"...i.e. the moral equivalent of slaughtering millions of people in gulags.

To be honest, its hard to be offended by that simply because the individual saying it has obviously and tragically lost all grip on reality.

Remind me again how long it took to get our first win, and tell me if that would be compatible with a sustained automatic promotion campaign if it occurs again this year...

We made our first signings for this promotion campaign in July and August 2009, and January 2010, compared to 2008/9when we hardly had a first team at all in July (or for most of the previous season, when the reserves played in the CCC).

Having already added about 8 starters to the core of Davis, Lallana and Schneiderlin, we need maybe 3 starters to compete with the other players who were Play-Off standard last season. We've lost at most 3 fringe players.

We'll have already been in contact with any out-of-contract targets ensuring they consider us and don't sign for anyone until they've heard our offer, and we won't get some until the Prem and CCC sides have their squads and we know who's out of favour and worth a punt.

Give it a rest, I'm not even going to think about it for another month. Even if we only sign a right back in that time we'll have plenty of capable players with experience of winning matches in this League.

If they are all fit and in-form at the beginning of the season. Scratch the surface of the first XI and we have f**k-all in reserve.

For me it does seem a little bizarre that so many of our fans have forgotten the impact Antonio and Papa had as subs, and what ability they gave AP to mix things up when needed.

They also seem to have forgotten how rudderless we were without Schneiderlin in midfield when injured or suspended......

They also seem to have forgotten how many times we conceeded goals from attacks down the opponents left flank..............

They also seem to have forgotten how many of our goals Rickie Lambert scored, and how unusual it is for a player to get through a season without some sort of injury...

We probably have the strongest first XI in L1, but its a house of cards...

I wonder what justifies your arrogance and complacency too Alps? That same team won a cup, beat Norwich at home and had one of thebest goal differences in the league...but hey, just keep looking at life through your sh*t tinted glasses eh.

Not the same team, there are two (three if you include semi) players missing from the team that did those things Papa and Antonio. Without them this team looks very pedestrian on the pace side of things. Plenty of teams are doing bussiness right now. After lasts years excuses that we started poorly becuase of our ****ed up pre-season, surely this year we should have got an early start on strengthening the team?

To be honest, I wasn't that impressed with Puncheon other than in the Walsall and Huddersfield matches, he wasn't very good in all the others, and i'm willing to bet that both Waigo and Antonio did more for the team over the same period of games than Puncheon did.

Can anyone gaurantee that we wont pick up two or three major injuries in the first couple of games? No, so surely it is important to bolster the squad in key areas at the earliset possible opportunity, let alone the right back and at least one player with some real pace, that the first team needs. We and especially Pardew don't have the time to allow players to gel and bed in once the season has started. Remember nothing less than automatic promotion will be tolerated and their are no excuses if it isn't achieved.

spot on both are worth far more to the team than Puncheon IMO

Am beginning to gt a bit concerned. Yes we clearly have the core of a good team, but also we obviously do need a few signings ...especially a right back for god's sake.

My concern is based on the fact that Pardew said last season, with justification, that he'd had no proper pre-season to work with the team, and that was why we had such a poor start to the season.

Well I woud have thought we'd want the new right back and any other new regular first choice player signed pretty soon, or we will have another incomplete pre-season, with presumably another poor start. Any free agent for example will even be missing out on pre-season fitness training now.

Alpine is making me nervous - in some respects he is right, pre season training starts soon (started?) and in an ideal world you have already signed the players you want.

How many do we really need? New RB, CB, MF, Winger and a striker? Thats 5 minimum, you would have expected 2 or 3 signings by now? I did anyway.

Anyways im not going to panick just yet - if things are still the same in 2 weeks then its time to worry.

Sheff Weds and Huddersfield are signing (on paper) some good players..........

On the bright side - we havent sold anyone!

:badger:

It's certainly good news that we haven't sold anyone ..in spite of the Lambert and Lallana rumours etc. However we have lost/let go our first choice right back, plus Antonio and Waigo, so there are some gaps to fill.

I was really surprised and disappointed we didn't sign Antonio btw. He could well develop like Kenwynne Jones did ..young ,with lots of raw talent that just needs developing the right way. Maybe there's still time, but there's been no gossip about a deal with Reading.

Anyway the first team is going away on the 8th according to the OS, so surely we'll want any major signings that are likely to be first team regulars to be with them by then ..and that's only days away.
