skintsaint Posted 2 July, 2010 Share Posted 2 July, 2010 Last seasons example of a slow start is a bit more than just bringing in a couple of players late. The club was just recovering from a turbulent summer - new management in place ripping things apart and putting in their ideas. Players brought in late - players confidence low, -10 points affects players mindsets. Also think a number of players already at the club had a shock at how teams play in this league. This season, we have a settled squad at the moment, confidence will be high i imagine after last season and looking to win the league this season. No doubt we are going to bring a couple of players into the club this month, as others say the RB position is the only spot we really need asap and I would only start to question the club if no RB has been brought into the team by the start of August. All other spots can wait till the end of August imo as we have enough here to cover a couple of injuries if they did happen.

NickG Posted 2 July, 2010 Share Posted 2 July, 2010 I remember the first 10 games not being that brilliant. they were quite poor, not trying to re-write history. But Lambert fitted in - but we didn't have Hammond, Harding, Fonte, Jaidi at the start of the season - that is the difference, we are probably adding one or two first team players, the rest back up. We do need 2 or 3 players - no doubt. A right back, central midfielder & maybe another striker/winger, but I am convinced AP & NC are aware of this & working on it. I cant prove it, but I have faith. Secret Site Agent Posted 2 July, 2010 Share Posted 2 July, 2010 Here's a genuine answer. I am not sure that something is going on about transfers, tbh. There are signs that the club is somehow consolidating revenue streams, it could be we are not going to make signings. Maybe ML was so p*ssed off at least seasons result, he has told the club to stand on its own two feet now. In which case, maybe Cortese now has to work under the same constraints as Lowe did, but without the smug supercillious attitude. I hgave got to be honest that now my eyes have been opened slightly regarding Marcus's and NC mindset that I can't see ML being ****ed of last season, and I don't believe that he would force the club to become fully self sufficient jjust yet, but that would be the ultimate plan, so I see this season as being one of consolidation and building for the future for the club, BUT also some strengthening of the areas we are lacking. I think the reason we don't know what is going on with transfers is purly because it's **** all to do with us UNTIL it's a done deal because my little Alpine darling, going around with a fist full of cash saying 'Who'll sell me a good player' means all the dirty agents coming out oft he wood work saying 'I've got a broken down young crock......I mean a potential Prem player. I know that others were only asked to pay £ 50,000, but he is really worth £200 million and you can afford it. Give us money'.
Saint Fan CaM Posted 2 July, 2010 Share Posted 2 July, 2010 Alpines sentiments are OK in that timing of squad enhancements in relation to a strong start to the season is important. The timing is though somewhat of an over-reaction given there is a good week before training camp. Having said that, with Papa, Antonio, Semi, Connolly and James not replaced yet, the strength of last seasons 1st team has been dented. And bringing in Dickson has not really addressed these positions. There are a number of young players listed by Saints in the squad that appear to be wanting 1st team football - my hope is that NC is not telling AP that he has to work with these players to make up the numbers and gain auto because I do not think they are strong enough. Central midfield is extremely weak if one or more of Spiderman or Hammond are out. So yeah, there are concerns, but it's much too early to start worrying about no action just yet. There has been very little personal invective in this thread towards the OP, in fact pretty much everyone has agreed that the club needs to bring in new players for the campaign ahead. However, the majority agreement seems to be that, while it would be nice to know which players we are signing/have signed, it is not yet of the overwhelming concern that Alpine portrays that we have not yet signed those players before we have even started to think about pre-season games, let alone the full season. The time for worrying that we haven't signed anyone is August; publicly crying about it now is completely premature and the whole content of the thread seems to be yet another "look at me" polarisation of fans opinions to attempt to fit an "I told you so" argument. Matthew Le God Posted 2 July, 2010 Share Posted 2 July, 2010 Unlike last summer, we already know a strong starting 11 which is more than strong enough to compete at the top of League One except for the right back slot. Look back at the Saints matchday XI and 7 subs on the opening day against Millwall August 2009 and compare with the current squad. As long as a right back is signed relatively soon the starting 11 is fine and will need little gelling. On top of that the squad needs some more cover in certain positions, but again this won't impact significantly on the starting 11. To question the transfer policy on 1st July is therefore bizarre. Even the big name free transfers like Joe Cole don't have new clubs yet, there are plenty of players out of contract and I'm sure plenty of other targets Saints are tracking. For all we know many could be quite advanced and signing soon, it makes complete sense for the club not to comment on transfers until they are concluded. If a few players aren't signed by the 8th July when the squad leave for the training camp I'd start to worry a little. But even then it is no big deal as players can be flown out later. NickG Posted 2 July, 2010 Share Posted 2 July, 2010 Squads are going to be limited to 25 players over 21 - I can't see Pardew wanting an inflated squad. They were discussing this morning that today is the opening of the full transfer window - appreciate England allow transfers - I think - from the end of the season, but it highlights how it is still very very early. If we are to get promotion we need to hit the grounding running as suggested by other posters John, labelling someone as "talking bollix" kind of trivialises your own response, but I'll respond nonetheless.... I've agreed that we need players; that is not in dispute by anyone. However, the current nucleus of the squad that we have is plenty good enough to hit the ground running. It's pretty much the same squad that finished the last 3/4 of the season with championship winning form, minus a couple of impact subs (Antonio and Waigo), a first choice RB and has been shorn of a load of dead wood. Apart from said RB spot (where Harding could feasibly cover) we have a very strong first team already in place. Add in the likes of Mills, Seaborne, Martin, Connolly etc and you have a number of players who can step up and do a perfectly good job in the team. Yes, we're short of proper depth in a number of areas; however, I'm not going to start crying about the fact that players haven't been signed. Not yet. The nucleus of the side is there and so the "gelling" argument from last year just isn't relevant in my opinion. Fonte didn't need any time to gel when he arrived; neither did Puncheon, they just fitted into what was already a well balanced and cohesive squad. That's what will happen with the signings that I expect us to make in the next few weeks, and fully in time to have a very strong squad come kick off in August. But then I'm probably just talking "bollix"
St BATman Posted 2 July, 2010 Share Posted 2 July, 2010 As I see it: GK: Davis; DF: Fonte; Jaidi; Harding; Dickson; MF: Lallana; Puncheon; Schneiderlin; Hammond; CF: Lambert; Barnard Subs: Bart; Seaborne; Wotton; Mills; Connoly; Martin; Oxlade-Chamberlain Would keep us going to start the season. We need a RB a CM a wide player and a striker (personally I think 2 as I would lose Connoly), however the notion that these should be automatic starters is not necessary when you look at that XI (possible exception of the RB!). With the 4 positions I have listed, some promising youngsters (Gobern, McNish) and the loan market available throughout the majority of the season to us to cover injuries we really aren't that far off. Also, with where we are in the pecking order if we were to get all our transfers in too early it is conceivable we could miss out on better players that become available later on in the window as squads higher up the leagues start to take their final shape... So, in terms of gelling the earlier the better. However, the reality is such that our first 11 doesn't need much strengthening in order to challenge for the title and squad players will have longer to gel into the ethos of the club through reserve fixtures and training sessions throughout the season as they are not regular starters. Finally, as has already been mentioned: Our BEST signings (Lambert, Fonte, Puncheon) didn't actually need any gelling time... Can't wait for the transfer activity to start but more importantly I can't wait to be going back to St Marys to watch us win a lot more than we lose again this season! SW11_Saint Posted 2 July, 2010 Share Posted 2 July, 2010 Its July 1st, and supposedly every contract in english football has ended or been dissolved. The World Cup, that other great block to trasnfer activity in the third Division of the English Football League, is almost over. The domestic game has been ended long enough for players and managers alike to buy and bring home their straw donkeys, kiss-me-quick hats and crap paintings of flamenco dancers. I'd agree with quite a lot of this but we do need one more CB as Martin is developing nicely and Seaborne can play there but if Fonte and Jaidi get injured we could have a problem. If said CB is right footed and can cover a first choice RB that we bring in all the better. Agree on the wide player, we don't need two now as Puncheon, Dickson and Lallana are in house and Ox-C might get some cameos there. Connolly was a star but can't see him being fit much so might be better if we can't agree pay-as-you-play to bring in someone like Jackson to keep Barnard on his toes. AP has already stated he wants back up to Rickie and proper competition in CM where Hammond had a mixed season. A RB will come in as well, I guess that Calderon was a risky investment but AP will have other options he wishes to pursue.

suewhistle Posted 2 July, 2010 Share Posted 2 July, 2010 The time for worrying that we haven't signed anyone is August; publicly crying about it now is completely premature and the whole content of the thread seems to be yet another "look at me" polarisation of fans opinions to attempt to fit an "I told you so" argument. This seems to be the heart of the matter. A consensus exists on more-or-less what we need but the whole of the OP is posited on the assumption that we haven't done anything yet. It's as if it were as easy as going to the supermarket and choosing between Heinz and HP beans. Maybe offers have been made and turned down, maybe, maybe, maybe... we don't know. up and away Posted 2 July, 2010 Share Posted 2 July, 2010 I am not having a love in with Alpine but mock his opinions at your peril. This is a genuine concern, other clubs in L1 have been rebuilding for a while. We have started the last few seasons (since loosing premiership status) half cooked at the start of every season for one reason or another, and left us us playing catchup on a regular basis. Although we can put a squad together be it lacking in a couple of area's, after letting 13 players go, we are weak on cover. We were lucky with Lambert last season as far as injuries are concerned, but surely it is asking too much for Lambert to go another season without a dodgy injury. With both wing players gone we are short there too. I am hoping that the reason we have not heard much is because our new owners and management are keeping a lid on everything, but underneath it all it would make me feel damn happier if I knew for sure that a team good enough to get us out of this league is pretty much in place and ready to get us off to a flying start. This is just natural when you are going after better players. Even when there is no or little differential in salary, the better player will naturally want to play in the best club, league that he thinks is within his reach. What would be concerning is if very good players are going to our direct competition, but that is not the case. We are just like hyenas around a carcass, waiting for the lions to have their fill. With our only realistic chances being when they have fed. We all know 100% that we will not hear anything official until a deal is done. We already have out targets and things are already under way, but you will not get movement until the club or the player makes a response.

SFKA South Woodford Posted 2 July, 2010 Share Posted 2 July, 2010 Totally agree with you that this club will be ready to take this league by storm on the first game. Pardew knows he will be out at Xmas if we are not in the top 6. Think you'll find Pilch, that he'll be out at Xmas if we aren't in the top 2, any hint of failiure to Cortese and Pardew will be given his marching orders, and no one will be able to deny he deserves them. He has absolutely no reason for not getting Saints automatically promoted this season and really should be disappointed if we are not Champions. Understand that Transfers cannot be rushed, but the window has been open for almost two months, no excuse for not signing out of contract players on pre contract deals, they have exclusive contracts with their previous club who were paying their wages up to June 30th, so the argument about saving money on pay by delaying the signing only comes into play from July 1st when our other players are already back in training, so any delay would be a bigger negative, than any financial gain. I give Pardew two weeks to get the signings made and have enough time to bed them into the team ready for the quick start that we and more importantly for himself, Pardew needs. Wes Tender Posted 2 July, 2010 Share Posted 2 July, 2010 I can understand some nervousness creeping in, as on the face of it several players have gone out and there are question marks over others such as Antonio, Papa and Connolly and whether they will return or be replaced. As it stands, we have signed Dickson, although it is not clear where he will play and we know that we had been after Calderon for RB, but missed out on him. Other than that, it has been very quiet. We knew well before we signed Dickson and that we were after Calderon. I have not heard any rumours about other players. Although that is not conclusive proof that we are not after other signings, nevertheless it is more usual that rumours do get out into the public domain. My main concern is based on the historic poor start to most new campaigns. If indeed we are to be favourites for automatic promotion, we need to put down a marker with a few wins under our belt early on. Whereas some believe that we have a squad capable of beating most in the division, there are weak spots, notably right back. We do not yet have the cover for all positions to allow for injuries. If Lambert broke his leg in that first match, we would probably find it difficult to replace him. I'd go as far as to say that had Murty remained injury free last season we would probably have been promoted and in this coming season we don't want to be in a situation that we allow injuries to disrupt our campaign because of lack of cover. Although the thread began too early on the first day of open transfer activity, it would have been nice to have heard something about prospective players having been seen at St Mary's for medicals, preparations for their signings having been discussed and terms agreed in principle during the past few weeks. As we get closer to the pre-season matches, the feeling grows that we will find ourselves leaving it late for the new season and running the risk of a poor start again. Torres Posted 2 July, 2010 Share Posted 2 July, 2010 no excuse for not signing out of contract players on pre contract deals, We signed Dickson in this way. Perhaps there just aren't any quality freebies knocking around at the moment? I certainly haven't yet seen anyone move to a rival club and feel that we have somehow missed out on an obtainable gem. The Kraken Posted 2 July, 2010 Share Posted 2 July, 2010 Would be nice to hear something' date=' anything(!), from our manager![/quote'] We'll agree to disagree then IKt, for me it would just be news for the sake of news. I'm happy to wait until there is something tangible to report, which I'm sure there will be in the next few days and weeks.

Lasts years excuse for a poor start (which I was happy to swallow) was there was little time to get things sorted before the season started. That left me feeling that we would make the most of this years break to get everything right. The longer we leave it the less time there is to settle the squad and hit the ground running IMO. But there is significantly less building which needs to be done this year. Say we get Antonio back in, then I would expect to see two maybe three more faces. Hardly the gelling of a whole team. True to a point but we still need a right back (or two) decent midfield cover and some pace in the team. The longer these new players have to work with the current players the better surely. Look what happened around the january window we bought in some great players but there was a dip in form as they got to know their team mates. Once they had we where the best side in the divison on form. If we bring in new signings to late (like August for example) we might start the season slower than we'd like putting pressure on the team from the start.
