bungle Posted 30 June, 2010 Share Posted 30 June, 2010 ...by their President. For not being good enough! http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/world_cup_2010/8777118.stm Shame for the Super Eagles. If the president manages to get away with this then FIFA will stop them playing for a lot longer I would have thought.

As they have Enyeama as their main keeper one of the few decent African goalies, this means we'll see more eccentric goalkeeping at the next AFCON Edited 30 June, 2010 by JackFrost

bungle Posted 30 June, 2010 Author Share Posted 30 June, 2010 Guinea, Ethopia and Madagascar will now fancy their chances of getting to Cup of Nations 2012. Their 1st Qualifying Group will be severely weakened without the Super Eagles.
bridge too far Posted 30 June, 2010 Share Posted 30 June, 2010 Good luck to Goodluck Jonathan with this, other countries should follow suit. But surely governments aren't allowed to interfere? Isn't France in trouble because of Sarkozy's interference?
fish fingers Posted 30 June, 2010 Share Posted 30 June, 2010 But surely governments aren't allowed to interfere? Isn't France in trouble because of Sarkozy's interference? This is true, i believe Kenya have previously been banned from FIFA matches due to this. If he carries through this threat they'll get a ban from the 2014 World Cup so i cannot see it happening. SNSUN Posted 30 June, 2010 Share Posted 30 June, 2010 Harsh, but if it gives the team a kick up the backside it's a good thing. Feel a bit sorry for the older Nigerians closer to retirement that won't get another chance to play for their country though. If it were England though, I don't think I would support it - but would missing the Euros in 2012 be such a loss?

The last Euros were very enjoyable as a result of England not being there, i'd support this.

Not sure it was a result of England not being there but it was good to watch. England would only spoil three matches anyway if they manage to qualify. JackFrost Posted 30 June, 2010 Share Posted 30 June, 2010 But surely governments aren't allowed to interfere? Isn't France in trouble because of Sarkozy's interference? Indeed and it's why Togo initially got banned from playing in the next AFCON although I believe due to the nature of the reasons they were reinstated. Iran have also been suspended, apparently when Mahmoud Ahmadinejad attempted to include himself in an Iran squad for a meaningless friendly
Gorgiesaint Posted 3 July, 2010 Share Posted 3 July, 2010 It's not just an investigation into the poor performance on the pitch. Apparently, one of the main issues was that Lars Lagerbeck had agreed a salary of $1m for the world cup but was told they would announce it as $1.5m in the press. Corruption is pretty rife at the Nigerian Football Federation (allegedly).
