equalizer Posted 27 September, 2008 Share Posted 27 September, 2008 Well done to the Philadelphia Phillies, National League East division champions for the second year in a row! Two in a row, whatever next a world series perhaps?? I can only dream!! \\:D/ No NY Yankees in the playoffs for the first time since 1993! Hope the Mets fail to make it as well! As for the World Series its a tough one to call, would love the Phillies to be there but can't see it, the Cubs are looking very good. The American League is even tougher to call with Boston, LA Angels and Tampa Bay capable of getting there. Its certainly going to be a interesting October as well as a nailbiting one!! saint lard Posted 28 September, 2008 Share Posted 28 September, 2008 I watched the phillies against the Blue Jays at the Skydome a few years back. It was great to sit in a fantastic stadium soak up the atmosphere, and all very, very cheap to get in for a reasonable view, mind you we were up so high thought i would get a nose bleed. The service was brilliant and if i remember correctly food was available from many outlets, all of good quality i think it had a hard Rock Cafe or something similar that you could dine in whilst watching. The only problem was it was the most boring 3-4 hours i have ever spent.
equalizer Posted 28 September, 2008 Author Share Posted 28 September, 2008 Yeah it is quite slow, but no worse than Cricket! American stadiums put ours to shame, I mean the legroom is amazing, that new one in Minnesota has a 55,000ish capacity yet is as big as the new Wembley!! Probably cost less too! The food is excellent with a lot of variety and at very good prices. Not the re-heated cack we get served up!
tpbury Posted 28 September, 2008 Share Posted 28 September, 2008 Most of this thread is about food. Why is food so important when going to a game? It's a sports event, not an eating event. Bring sandwiches facrissakes. All those people moaning about how expensive Wembley is keep saying '£8 for fish and chips'!!! Don't ****ing buy it you fat ****s! No-one's twisting your arm. Bring sandwiches, or stop off at Sainsbury's.

mynameisthehulk Posted 28 September, 2008 Share Posted 28 September, 2008 The last time I went to the Metrodome the cheap seats were only $4, bargain, although my Minnesota Twins sucked that day. Lets hope they manage to get into the playoffs this year.

Kadeem Hardison Posted 28 September, 2008 Share Posted 28 September, 2008 I had free tickets to a Cubs game at Wrigley Field some years ago, but England were playing Poland in a Euros qualifier the same day. So we ditched our tickets and found some Polish pub in the seedier part of Chicago instead and watched a dull 0-0 draw. I imagine that was still more exciting than watching 8 hours of rounders. Long way to go to match the Atlanta Braves 14 years in a row. But only one World Series win in that time. I will predict the Cubs implode in the first round of the play-offs with the Angels beating the Dodgers in the World Series, although I would love to see the Cubs win it all. For those saying it is boring, you probably don't like cricket either. Went to a game last weekend where the Braves were down 4-0 to the Mets early on but were up 7-4 by the end of the 8th inning and almost blew it in the 9th, winning 7-6. Great entertainment for about 3 hours on a beautiful sunny day.

Americans love it when I tell them baseball is like rounders, a game we play in England as young kids before we play cricket. Should've gone to Wrigley - great old-style stadium. Sure the 2-3 hours of rounders would have been better than the England game.
equalizer Posted 29 September, 2008 Author Share Posted 29 September, 2008 I just hope the Phillies don't implode in the first round of the playoffs like they did last year. All that hard work in turning a 7 game deficit with 17 games left to win the division on the last day(thanks Mets!!) and we get tonked 3 games to 0 by the Rockies!! I can actually see it being an all LA final which would be interesting. With the Angels just edging it!
Niemster Posted 29 September, 2008 Share Posted 29 September, 2008 Well although my team the Marlins aren't in the play offs i think they had a very good season they just have to stop losing so many in a row all the time. Very pleased we are the last team to win at Shea and we stopped a New York team from going through.

equalizer Posted 3 October, 2008 Author Share Posted 3 October, 2008 They'll probably do better away from Wrigley, although I'd rather play the Dodgers than the Cubbies in the NLCS. Great comeback by the Red Sox to stay alive last night. Didn't want to jinx them! LOL. Plus part of me still doesn't believe they have actually made the World Series. Luckily I got to see Game 5 over here. I think Cole Hammels has got a very good future ahead of him. Not sure who I fancy in the AL though, whoever we get its going to be mighty tough! That was some comeback by the Red Sox if they can pull it off it will be one of the best comebacks ever surely??!!

equalizer Posted 18 October, 2008 Author Share Posted 18 October, 2008 Forgot about that one, still 7 runs down in the 7th when 3 games to 1 down if they can win the next two, that will run it pretty close IMO.

In that great American tradition of naming their national (+plus the odd Canadian interloper) champion, World Champion! Watching it last night was one of those great sporting experiences - the atmosphere electric, the Phillie fans hanging on every pitch, the roar when things went their way, the sigh in unison when they didn't. Tim Southampton Rover Posted 29 June, 2009 Share Posted 29 June, 2009 Saw the NY Mets last year at the Shea Stadium. Great day out, they certainly know how to entertain the fans despite the lack of action. We got free NY Mets towels when we went in, got some cheap food, mixed with the opposition fans and generally felt like I was a kid again. Football over here seriously needs to take note about how to treat fans and give fans their moneys worth. All together now... Take me out to the ball game......
