Saint 76er Posted 30 June, 2010 Share Posted 30 June, 2010 Sochaux will be a good warm up, top flight European team. Only hope its not part of a deal for Morgan though... Sochaux are based in the town of Montbeliard, near the Swiss border. They were formed in some arrangement with the nearby Peugeot factory and still have the Peugeot lion as their badge. However, they are not a wealthy side as not a populous area and thus not big crowds. Their ground is 20,000 capacity quite nice fully enclosed two tier stadium. I would therefore be surprised if they could afford 2 million or so for Morgan. However, it may be worth noting that Sochaux had several young players of considerable promise playing for France at the same tournament that Morgan recently graced. It may be that our connection with Sochaux could possibly involve us signing a player from them, rather than the other way round...
suewhistle Posted 30 June, 2010 Share Posted 30 June, 2010 Thanks Saint76er for the info, I must admit it did surprise me when I looked at the map. I stayed at Remiremont on my last drive back from the UK, and the area is notable for the lack of cities; I presume they punch a bit above their weight. Scummer Posted 1 July, 2010 Share Posted 1 July, 2010 I see that Sochaux is where Alain Perrin went after he got the sack from Pompey. He nearly became our manager at one point as well as I recall.

Yes that must be right, Saints thought, " Oh, let's wait till we have all the fixtures and then we can announce them all at once so..... oh.... hang on.... who released the details of the 3 other friendlies? If that's the case I'd say wait and have a midweek January fixture against some decent European side on a mid-winter break. Let all ST holders in for free as a thanks for committing to the club and as an apology for the monumental f**k-up this summer over renewals and also a chance to unveil all those new transfer-window big signings! If we think we can compete then fair enough, but right now as a third level team, playing top class opposition will just demoralise the team right before the start of the season. Forget the opposition, it's a friendly and a memorial game to a man who is known as Mr Southampton FC Would it be right to remove this memorial game? Especially considering the death of his wife only weeks ago.

You don't think Ted Bates deserves a memorial game then I assume? And it would be a bit of a dishonour not to have it, especially as Mrs Southampton FC passed away recently? Dave Benson Phillips Posted 1 July, 2010 Share Posted 1 July, 2010 Yeah it's acceptable. Legend yes, but a game every year? I think a few of the games have been a let down and not worthy of his name really. it started v Bayern and that was perfect, but now, we can't compete with big teams like that, why embarass ourselves? perhaps a local game v pompey or something would be better, or even 2 saints teams playing each other. but perhaps it isn't for pre-season. why not an end of season thing? We will agree to disagree then. And anyway, was just a hypothetical question as I am sure the club will not drop a game designed to honour the greatest man in Southampton FC's history during the year his wife, another loyal SFC servant, passed away. And it would be a bit of a dishonour not to have it, especially as Mrs Southampton FC passed away recently? As I said, it wouldn't bother me. I've been to the last couple of TBM games. It's not a great deal of fun watching us being outclassed by a top European team and a little embarassing having the trophy presented in a near empty stadium. Personally I don't think any 'memorial' trophy is a good idea. There are better ways to recognise TB IMO.

Should we play a pre-season game for the Ted Bates Trophy - absolutely yes, should we make sure its top flight opposition that are likely to play us off the park & damage morale with 1 week left to go before that start of the season - absolutely not HTH

Dave Benson Phillips Posted 1 July, 2010 Share Posted 1 July, 2010 it appears that this is exactly what the club have done.... No, that's not is it, we have known about the Reading, Barnet and Eastleigh game for weeks. And I have been asking the club simply for a location and dates ( not bothered about the games at that stage ) for MONTHS. They should have announced it earlier. You are a tedious mongtard trolling little c*nt. Get a life. Are you going to say sorry for getting it wrong the other day? Going to ignore it again? Thought so... irrelevent no-mark.
