Chez Posted 29 June, 2010 Posted 29 June, 2010 We've got a nice new kit with no sponsor. remove nice from that sentance and you have a fact.
Dave Benson Phillips Posted 29 June, 2010 Posted 29 June, 2010 We've got a nice new kit with no sponsor. Ahhh the kit, the lovely gesture from the club to us, well done. 3) Kit with no sponsor ( 1 year kit which in itself will almost cover the loss in sponsorship, without adding the booking fees, 15% season ticket increase etc )
landford.saint Posted 29 June, 2010 Author Posted 29 June, 2010 Dear Trousers, it's a bit of a unansweable question, how do you answer the unanswerable? An opinion poll, maybe, but that only evaluates the feelings of those polled. Agreed this forum is too small a sample. But I as you do speak to other fans and I get the fairly consistant message that the fan is being seen more as a cash source than the core customer base. You don't annoy your customer. Simple explanatins are all that is required. I agree that in comparison with most other clubs in this country, let alone league, we are sitting pretty, bit all the more teson to get things right. As stated more eloquently above (ignoring DBSof course) so e decisions have been strange and unjustified. Le
trousers Posted 29 June, 2010 Posted 29 June, 2010 (edited) Nicola Cortese perfects art of balancing Tony Evans, Football Editor You can never bank on what the future will bring. A year ago Nicola Cortese was working for Banque Heritage in Geneva, managing the finances of billionaires. Some 500 miles away, Southampton were sliding towards administration and a points deduction. There were real concerns in Hampshire about the club’s future. A year on, there is a palpable air of wellbeing around St Mary’s. Cortese, in his role of chairman, has seen Southampton overcome a ten-point deduction to sit in the top half of Coca-Cola League One and a Wembley final looms. Southampton face Carlisle United in the final of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy on Sunday. More than 44,000 fans will travel from the South Coast to London for the match, endorsing Cortese’s conviction that this is a club with a big future. “This is a Premier League club in waiting,” he said. “There is a lot of potential here.” The 40-year-old never planned to run a football club. Last summer he conducted the deal to buy Southampton for Markus Leibherr, a German-born, Swiss-based industrialist. After the purchase was completed in July — despite a false start, the negotiations concluded rapidly — the new owner realised he had acquired a business with no senior management structure. “Markus asked me to run the club,” Cortese said. “I’d taken care of his money. Now he wanted me to take care of Southampton.” Moving into football — and to Hampshire with his wife and two children — was not as much of a culture shock as it might be for many bankers. Cortese had run the sports business desk for Credit Suisse, a job that brought him into contact with many of the game’s big players, including Silvio Berlusconi. What the world of finance did give him, however, is a clear-eyed view of what is wrong with football’s spendthrift mentality. “Clubs spend money they do not have,” he said. “They spend next year’s income. They spend money that will not arrive for two years and say, ‘But we’ll have some success and bring in more cash to cover the shortfall.’ It cannot be sustained. “In good times you need to be saving money for the bad times. If we reach the Premier League, I would like to be in a position where we did not need parachute payments. In good years you should put money away for the bad years.” Such prudence means that Southampton will never be a third-tier Manchester City — even if Alan Pardew is the envy of most League One managers. Cash has been made available to Pardew. When José Fonte reversed the trend of players moving up divisions and signed from Crystal Palace, it showed Southampton’s ambition. “Other clubs know we have money,” Cortese said. “But we will not pay over the odds.” Yet Cortese is not the cold-eyed accountant his prudence suggests. “On Saturdays I can’t sleep,” he said. I get very nervous. I wake up at 5am and can’t eat before the match. My hands feel icy cold — it’s the only time. Normally they are warm. It’s terrible.” To while away the time on the long, dark winter Saturday mornings, he has taken to playing a match predictor online, projecting the scores in the division until the end of the season. Invariably, Southampton make the play-offs in Cortese’s predictions, one of the few occasions he seems to be getting his sums wrong. The chance of competing for promotion appears to have gone for this season and here the Swiss is less than impressed. “We should have done better,” he said. “We have thrown away too many points.” It is a rare downbeat note at a buoyant St Mary’s. Work has started on a million-pound upgrade of the training ground and Cortese’s work in fostering a team spirit across the club is paying dividends. At Christmas the staff party was thrown open to all employees, not just the players. “It was a black-tie event and it showed everyone was important,” he said. “Graeme Murty said it was fantastic. He’d never been to a club function like it. The cleaners contribute to the club’s success as well as the players. Teamwork makes the business a success.” Cortese’s connections with Berlusconi mean that some in Italy see the Southampton experience as preparation for a future role with AC Milan. The suggestion is laughed off. “I want to take Southampton to the Premier League,” he said. And if that happens, what next? “I’d like a little estate in Tuscany, where I could grow my own wine,” he said. “And sell just enough to pay for itself.” Even in the daydreams, the costs get covered. Under Cortese, Southampton will never find themselves in the red again. You can take that to the bank. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/football_league/article7070442.ece (mods - apologies if I've cut and pasted too much from that Times Article - just felt it gave some balance to the thread if posted as a direct quote rather than via a link) Edited 29 June, 2010 by trousers
Dave Benson Phillips Posted 29 June, 2010 Posted 29 June, 2010 Free season tickets for under 8's (with a paying adult). Not sure I can put that as it's not PR but a commercial decision, but in our quest to find 12, I shall put it in. 4) Free under 8's season ticket with paying adult. ( although it is targeted marketing, the extra revenue from the extra adults will more than cover the loss of the Under 8's who had previously paid )

Micky Posted 29 June, 2010 Posted 29 June, 2010 Stu, I am at a loss as to why you want to bait the whole forum into discrediting NC. You've made your point about the 'ticket tax', 'echo' and 'HSTs', but why now bait everybody else to defend NC. As I pointed out - the best positive that we could have had was NC's interest in this club when it was on it's knees and looking into the abyss. If we have to give a little more in order to reach the 'places we want to go' then, as far as I am concerned, so be it. I just can't understand your continual 'war' against the man - besides - if you don't like the product, dont buy it, simple really. Do you want NC and ML to leave the club, and we start all over again? Staggered.

In his eyes its all down to how unreasonable everybody else is. The NC vendetta is just a continuation of that.

Would you prefer that we could go back to this time last year and let the club be liquidated rather than have an astute businessman running the club in a professional manner? Ungrateful little c*nt.

I listed a dozen examples... we have 5 so far on the pro-Cortese side! I am trying to balance the debate. Do I want Cortese to leave? Maybe... either that or learn to treat the supporters with respect. If Cortese goes, Liebherr won't follow and jack in his investment, even if he does, someone has to buy the club off him.

Dave Benson Phillips Posted 29 June, 2010 Posted 29 June, 2010 You, of course, know this as fact. Erm, even if he does, he will have to sell us before he can go. And all of you that believe there has already been significant investment in the club, do you think Liebherr will just p!ss his money down the drain just because one of his employers leave? Now rather than sniping at me, give me some reasons as to why Cortese has shown good PR, customer service skills and respect for the supporters. Its not hard... as I thought would happen, all it is attracting is people saying " shut up " etc etc, nobody is actually giving me any examples of how Cortese is doing a good job and engaging with supporters.

Smirking_Saint Posted 29 June, 2010 Posted 29 June, 2010 TBH Stu The main Gripes as such are felt by about 8-10 people on this internet forum, a forum that all in all doesn't represent that of the entire saints fan base. Every single one of my mates that has a ST, yeah, they all had a bit of a moan but all have renewed their ST's now, along with atleast 6 of us that are buying a new ST. The one thing i don't want to happen again is to fall back where we were the season before last, that was horrific and the worst point i have ever felt as a saints fan, ML/NC have come in and ok, have upset a few people, but is only a very few that are still flinging the toys out of the pram. He has high aims for us, has invested heavily into the playing side and infrastructure and is trying to make us self sufficient. What is wrong with that ? You may have your point Stu, you may not like it, but stop trying to ram it down ours FFS.
Dave Benson Phillips Posted 29 June, 2010 Posted 29 June, 2010 I like the new kit, the lack of sponsor, and thought delaying the kit so much build up anticipation at a time when nothing else was going on, that was good business and will no doubt result in it being a very popular shirt. Good business decision, agreed, at least I am not the only one that can clearly see it is not the 'gift' that it was made out to be a few months ago. He gave Pardew money to spend, got good deals for Lambert and Barnard and no doubt will continue like this given how many players have been released. Not sure if you realised it but Cortese doesn't have the money, Liebherr does Most of all, he hasn't ****ed off yet and left us broke in a recession despite the number of fans moaning at him. Not sure if you have noticed yet, Liebherr owns the club, Cortese is simply an employee I've not seen ticketing issues I think are sensible or logical at any club under any ownership to be fair, so can't specifically dislike Cortese for it. If they are sensible and logical, can you explain why no other club in the country adopts his strategy? Are they all wrong and Cortese is right? Well done for trying though.

Instead it has been highjacked by persons who at best just like taking an extremist stance on any subject just for the hell of it. I apologise. Nothing is extremist about asking people to give reasons as to why they don't agree with you that Cortese is p!ssing off large sections of our support. Is Cortese deliberately trying to annoy the fans. Its all very well people coming on here saying " fakk orrf Dave you c*nt , Cortese is amazing , you are talking sh!t " , but not a single one of them has actually given any constructive reasoning as to how Cortese has shown to respect and care about the people whom SFC rely on to pay the bills... the fans.
benjii Posted 29 June, 2010 Posted 29 June, 2010 I do hate to say I told people so. Things will only get worse. Look at some of the things since Cortese has been introduced. - Banned the Echo ( which is the mouthpiece for SFC for alot of people who rely on it for news about the club ) Don't care - Banned Benali Don't really know why - don't really care. - Slated legends like Le Tiss, Mac, Keegan et al Many people would agree that the comments he made were fair. He hardly slated them merely said what many thought about a particular moment in time. - Deliberately kept silent when all speculation about Pardew was happening. Good - as the speculation was ********. - Deliberately keeping details of the Pre-Season tour from fans ( Echo announced 3 weeks ago they knew where it was ) About 50 people will give a ****. - Deliberately leaving press releases until 11:20pm so The Echo cannot report it the next day, for no other reason than to p!ss the paper off at the expense of the fans. Don't care - Charging a £3 booking fee. Bit annoying but hardly a life-changer. I will book as many matches as I can in each go. Probably a sensible move by the club if it has that effect in large numbers. More money in quicker. - Charging a £2 matchday price. Sensible. - Most expensive tickets in the league. This is a lie. - Removal of payment plan. Get a credit card. - Deliberate late notice of payment plan. Bit annoying. - Refusal to enter into engagement with supporters over issues. Really? If you mean refusal to send a lengthy personal email to every person who writes to him then, again, good. There are underlings for that sort of job. - Creating a supporters charter then tearing it up, going against many of the aims in the said charter. What are the many aims? I am aware of one possibility viz. installment plan. - Late notice of season tickets going on sale for no apparant reason. To be fair there is a window in which they will obviously go on sale (ie. sometime before the new season.) What's the problem? - No Season Ticker Holder priority for cup tickets. For one match. Who cares. It's been done plenty of times before. - Trying to pass off the no sponsorship as a gift to the fans whilst increasing other revenue streams to cover it tenfold. But they're not mutually exlcusive. He could have done all that and had a sponsor. Stop being a thicko. There is just a few PR gaffs / customer fails by our whiter than white Chairman Mr Cortese in the last 2 months. It amazes me that people can not put all these points together to get a picture of the sort of person we are dealing with here. Pick your toys up.
The Fat Controller Posted 29 June, 2010 Posted 29 June, 2010 i think that a few people shouting the odds need to get real. 12 months ago the club was bust and heading out of business. Yet now saved by a very wealthy benefactor, a lot of people are expecting ML to subsidise the club beyond it's means. Southampton FC is a business and now is being ran as a such. The club is like every other company in the land in the fact that it is tightening it's belt. If we want the best players in this division , then we must expect to pay for it through the ticket prices. If you cant stump up £400 in one hit for a season ticket, then do like most other people - use your credit card and pay it off.

JustMike Posted 29 June, 2010 Posted 29 June, 2010 I have supported saints for over 40 years, and was vociferous in my desire to rid us of 'Duckhunter Lowe". N.C. came in saying all the right words of transparency, communication, and 'giving the club back to the fans'. But despite promises in the charter, they have dropped the instalment plan at short notice, penalising the poorer fan. He has introduced £3 additions to sales, again penalising the poorer fan, and now he has abandoned ST holers to 'claom' their usual seats. All of these things in isolation are not major things, but the culminative effect of these I know has p!ssed off slot of fans. I think NC needs to takeore advice from people like D. Luker, to repair some of this PR damage. If he was deliberately trying to gradually annoy people this would be the way to go. Deliberate? I don't think so. But definately avoidable. no.

forever a red and white Posted 29 June, 2010 Posted 29 June, 2010 its actually very similar to the way the liverpool owners are trying to do things. Its about revenue maximisation but trying to get as many fans in as possible, especially in the seats that are generally in more demand, whilst ignoring current customers, its all about trying to extent fanbase, adn not the best way round it. I can accept the three pount charge as we have to cover our costs of the new football development centre and increased wages for better players. The installment plan I understand, but very frustrated becasue season ticket holders from last season, including myself can longer renew.

EastleighSoulBoy Posted 29 June, 2010 Posted 29 June, 2010 He doesnt really think though Mickey. Stu's jobs and relationships dont last long. In his eyes its all down to how unreasonable everybody else is. The NC vendetta is just a continuation of that. This would never have happened in the army, civvy life is sh!yte. The more I read from StuRomseyRant the more vindicated I feel in my point that he cannot get to grips with civvy life.
