Car Parking

Everyone that I can see is commenting on speculation. No harm in that at all. I see nothing wrong with saying that IF something is a certain way then you will feel a certain way about it.

Yes but commenting on speculation as if it's FACT.

Nobody knows what the charges are going to be so why doesn't everyone wait before they slit their wrists/return their STs

I've never commented on it as if it is fact. I doubt anyone is stupid enough to believe it is all fact, they are just commenting on what the reasons could be. That's how it is for me anyway.

Only just noticed this thread, has anything changed since the OP?

A ridiculous price hike, if not.

Introduction of pay-and-display parking in the stadium car parks (seemingly 7 days a week) as well as an increase in the price for the "satellite" car parks on matchdays.

Pedantry alert.....I believe they are the 'take a ticket and pay as you leave' variety which gives them more scope for a free period of parking (e.g. for Megastore Visitors)

Well I sent this email (below in italics) to the club over the weekend . No reply as yet. In fact the carparking@ email address as stated on the last communication we had from them bounced, so unless David Luker replies no one will. Not good customer service is it?

I've had a parking season ticket for quite a few years and am seeking information about renewal.

When we paid for our match season tickets 4 weeks ago we asked about parking but were told that information would be given out in about 3 weeks time, ie about a week ago.

Over the past few days I've heard rumours about parking tickets being available albeit with a big price rise and also rumours about the car park we use (B) being closed. My wife rang the main club number yesterday. The person she spoke to had no information, but supposedly went to find out. There was then overheard a conversation in the background to the effect that 'it was another b***** parking enquiry', and then the phone was simply put down on her.

Please could you clarify what *is* happening about parking?

My customer number is .....

Are the club going out of their way to employ t0ssers with absolutely no customer service skills?

Perhaps they are exclusively recruiting people who failed the McDonalds interview?

The club owe you an apology Ken.

Bet you don't get one.

I imagine it is frustrating because information is being kept from ticket office staff as well. That's no excuse but it does slightly explain the attitude. I bet they are as frustrated as everyone else.

I agree Hypo......... I think the Ticket Office come on here to find out what's going on at work.

But there's no excuse for unprofessional behaviour towards a customer.

I renewed my parking in car park B this afternoon (father is in his 80's and disabled so he cannot walk very far) and I spoke to a very pleasant young lady who told me that the rise in parking prices was due to the club running at a loss last year and the new prices were a break even figure. I used the operations number 02380 711 966 and although disappointed with the cost and lack of information I can see the point in the hike if she was correct and it is to cover costs. I am now waiting to see what they do for motorcyclists which is my other option when I only have to take one of the children, apparently this info will be out in the next week or so.

And there you have it. A simple explanation that no doubt covers all the "price hikes" we have seen recently. Cortese is simply moving 'the company' from a loss making model to a break even one.

Now, if only he'd bloody communicate that simple fact we could close down 37 threads on here!!

Unless, of course, a company revealing their profit/loss margins in public is not the done thing in business circles as it reveals your hand to suppliers etc....?? Hence Cortese's tight lips....?

Loose lips sink ships - and football clubs.

I can see why people are p*ssed off about this. It does seem a large rise if the figures are to be believed. But what proportion of our fans actually use parking provided by the club? I would wager it's actually quite a small percentage. And if it's running at a loss that means that the vast majority are subsidising it in one way or another. I hope the club will allocate an adequate number of spaces for disabled fans but, frankly, the city is not short of parking spaces within a reasonable walking distance for the able-bodied and if these are cheaper, why not use them if you can? I'm fortunate enough to live within walking distance of the ground and, despite being the ripe old age of 53, can still get my aching limbs there under their own power but it's still further than several city centre car parks.

I did see something in the paper about Bristol Rovers (or was it City?) who are encouraging fans to use bicycles to go to matches, even promising that team members will greet early cyclists. There's a whole load of cycle spaces at St Mary's so perhaps more of us should travel that way.

It's not so much the price rise that irritates, especially if it is just to meet costs, it is the complete lack of communication. We're having to make repeated efforts to find out about this, and have yet to succeed. If this were a business with normal customers instead of addicted fans like us, they'd have lost custom by now. As it is, even I'm getting pretty ****ed off.

Doubt I'll go to many cup games next season for example if my parking ticket doesn't cover those games as people on here are saying...especially evening games. It's a real rush for me to get to evening games after work and if I have to mess about with parking as well as getting cup tickets, chances are I won't bother. Apathy will win. So that's a minimum of 2 tickets' worth of income they'll have lost per cup game.

I was in Cemex car park D which is not being renewed and I am now in Britannia Road opposite the Citroen garage. The cost was £200 up from the £130 I paid for Cemex. I will roll with it as I have just got the old farts discount on the ST

if that free period is enough to queue to buy a match day ticket during the week that would be nice.

Couldn't agree more. By the time we get down from Andover during the rush hour thru the jams at Winchester and then now have to mess about parking a fair way from the ground we probably won't bother. That means a loss of 3 tickets from long standing fans who bought a car parking ticket last year for £130 and attended 100 % of all matches at home including every friendly and 75 % of all away games. The hassle involved getting to Northam when you live a fair way away outweighs the pleasure.

I agree ..... would have been much better access by Road, Rail, and Air had the Stadia Complex been at Stoneham ........

Maybe a sharp price increase in parking around the stadium is some sort of ploy to deliberately put people off driving around the stadium area on match days, prehaps in an effort to minamise matchday traffic and encourage people to walk or use public transport?

but road access, which is absolutely critical, would probably have been worse.

The poarking plans were for 7000 spaces and 2 exits.

It would have taken forever to get out of the car parks. This was a key point for the protesters, and one which was never properly addressed. In city centre sites like the Dell and SMS you have lots of alternative routes....i leave after the final whistle, and with current attendances I am at home, which is about 35 mins from the airport Junction, by 6.00 PM.

So for an extra £23.33 each you're going to give up going completely? Because you can't be bothered to park ten minutes further away from the ground?

If so, that just proves how a business will always have some weird customers and that no decision can suit everyone.

Exactly, reading some of the comments on here you would think Southampton was gridlocked every home match. It isn't.

Just for your information, and I understand that this may not be suitable for your group, but you can get from Andover to Southampton in just over 1 hour from Andover by train, changing at Salisbury, and the cost is £13.90 return. Bus direct to the ground.

What about, in addition, the £10.50 each time you park for a cup match of any description or do you prefer not to consider that. Thanks for calling me weird you arrogant idiot just because you don't agree with my comments. If you had bothered to read previous posts you will know that because of age I have severe problems walking to the ground.

Didnt we use to have a system in place that encouraged people not to use their cars?

But the previous management in their wisdom decided to stop the free bus passes.

Still thats in the past now.

So don't go to the cup matches. Having said that, it would be just £3.50 each, assuming you come in your usual trio. Many of the cup matches will be at cheaper prices anyway. If you can afford to share the petrol from Andover, presumably an extra £3 won't break the bank? If you have severe problems walking don't you qualify for a disabled badge? I have the utmost sympathy for you with respect to physical difficulties and I realise money is tight (I am not doing something I had planned to do this weekend because I need to save money) but it sounds a bit like you're throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Last season I paid £130 for the season for all games. This year it is £200 plus £10.50 per cup game. No thanks. Im getting on now and if I find the walk to the ground too much this will be my last season as a supporter after 55 years. This club will soon put people like me out of their price range !!

You can park in City Centre Car parks for games for £4.50. I'm no spring chicken either but find the walk up and down is great exercise and there are always streams of fans walking up with me. At the end of the game by the time you get back to your car the traffic has died down a bit so that's more comfortable all round as well. A win-win situation unless you are one of those types who must be the first out of the car park.

  • 3 weeks later...
Just phoned the club.. there has been a delay at the printers.

When club receive them, they will then start posting them out.

They may as well include the programmes from the last game for the season in the same mailshot, assuming they're ready now....
