stevegrant Posted 29 June, 2010 Share Posted 29 June, 2010 Surprised more people arent calling for Shearer to be honest. Why would people be calling for Shearer? He proved in his short spell in charge of Newcastle that he can't hack it as a manager. It's very much the "English Disease" that we believe that only an Englishman can do a good job as England team manager. As has been demonstrated on this thread already, there are only two English managers in the top 10 of the Premier League, and with those two individuals' connections to brown envelopes, they won't be getting the job any time soon. Until more English coaches get the top UEFA licences and use them to coach young players, rather than senior pros (there are less than 150 people in this country with the UEFA "A" licence, and none of them coach at youth levels, compared with 640 out of 750 "A" licence holders in Spain coaching children), English managers are likely to be left behind at the highest level. Mark`` Posted 29 June, 2010 Share Posted 29 June, 2010 I blame the players...not the manager. they can perform, you have seen it for their respective club sides. Capello was the Dogs balls earlier in the season. what is he now? its the players, burnt out and don't work well as a team because they are all the focal point of their respective teams. I say to the future, the players are got at under - 21 know how to perform as a team.
skintsaint Posted 29 June, 2010 Share Posted 29 June, 2010 Ill go for Hodgson over Redkrapp, just because of the extra experiance of managing internationally.
Junction 9 Posted 29 June, 2010 Share Posted 29 June, 2010 Surprised no one has suggested Tommy Widdrington or Nick Holmes as they are routinely touted whenever the Saints job is available. Of the original list only Redknapp is a possible contender as the FA would not go back to a manager with a proven record of not coming up with the goods at international level.England have never gone the route of just appointing a key player without managerial experience so that rules out Shearer (or Beckham). Well I was about to mention Widdrington when I saw your post. Obviously he wouldn't be the first choice for many but this thread is about ex Saints. The FA spend 6m a year on Capello to achieve a dreadful World cup performance. Widdringotn could save them a fortune and the money saved could be ploughed back in to the grass roots level. The players all know how to play football, you can't coach them anymore than they get at club level, they just need to be galvanised as a team and told tactical specifics on the actual opponents. Widdringotn could do all of these things.
VectisSaint Posted 29 June, 2010 Share Posted 29 June, 2010 Redkrapp is not suitable for England, no transfer dealings to line his pockets, and he is a poor coach. Hodgson is the most suitable candidate if a candidate is required. Don't agree though that England manager needs to be English, in fact this would simply be an admission that England have no ambition other than languishing in the mediocrity of the current set up. To me Capello is still (one of) the best options, but he needs to build a team that does not include certain players, Terry and Lampard for a start. The other ex-Saint that will probably be touted in the future and who would make a 1st class assistant to Hodgson would of course be Pearson, but maybe he wants more club success first, though why he thinks he will achieve that at Hull is beyond me. Only because the thread was ex Saints. I dont think he should but given the job but from the ex-Saints on offer, he's high on the list I'd have thought. Former Saints who could/should manage England?...

ooohTerryHurlock Posted 29 June, 2010 Share Posted 29 June, 2010 Not Harry Redcrap - too much suspicion about the way he does business for him to be considered for the England job. Sam Allardyce or Gareth Southgate, backing up a figure head Beckham..... Allardyce is even more shady than Harry.... and not as good.... and as for Southgate........ you must surely be on some kind of strong prescrition drug that has sent you over the edge.... I suggest you take a very long look in the mirror and question everything in your life!
ooohTerryHurlock Posted 29 June, 2010 Share Posted 29 June, 2010 Waddle took a pop at the FA but they are powerless to do anything about it. All the power is now with the PL and they don't give two hoots about England. We need to limit the number of foreign players and the number of games for a start. The PL won't agree to that. I agree with a lot of what Waddle has been banging on about except for the fact that he moaned that we did n't take any kids, but was the prime advocate in slating our Theo in saying that he 'did n't have a footballing brain'. Bearing in mind that Theo is only 21/22 and would have been the youngest player on the plane. The fact we had the oldest squad there was a 'big thing' in his (waddles) vehement tirade but was happy that Theo was left at home in preference to SWP or Lennon?.... as he only had pace to offer. I would have like Waddle to have offered to help develop Theo, as he (Walcoot) is one ot the best prospects we have at the moment...... in exchange MLT could have taught Dr Waddle (the football guru!) how to stick a ball away from twelve yards instead of banging it high, wide and hansom!!!!.... Theo should have gone and that is one of the main reason we were so ****e as we just did n't have any pure quality on the bench.
