Quickfire Double Posted 28 June, 2010 Share Posted 28 June, 2010 It's been far more "Golden Shower" than "Golden Generation". The current squad have shamed the England shirts they've showed no passion to play for, and although the next World Cup is 4 years away, it's a real struggle right now to see anyone coming through to change that next time round. david in sweden Posted 28 June, 2010 Share Posted 28 June, 2010 (edited) Perhaps in retrospect THEO..it was a good tournament to miss out on. Lampards disallowed effort clearly affected morale at HT but without Lampard and Gerrard England has no midfield, and the once rock-like John Terry slipped up several times. Did we miss Ferdinand..probably but it wouldn't have made much difference. We need a new generation goalie..are you listening Joe? and a new team. Goodbye Becks, Owen, Heskey (thank God),nice while it lasted. While Rooney and Defoe were the top scorers in the Prem...but only managed one goal between them in four games. On the world stage, when playing second rate sides, England looked third rate. Capello is at fault for trying to impose "continental " (read Italian) style football on Prem League players. Algerian game was more embarrasing than yesterdays " blitz." IF Capello stays (the FA should pay him off) he must re-think dramatically. As for FIFA, their Board should re-sign in shame..espeically if the Lampard incident is repeated in the Final..! In future ..who needs referees ..the average fan behind the goal with a video camera could do a better job ! Super_Uwe Posted 28 June, 2010 Share Posted 28 June, 2010 The sad thing - yet again - is that we've gone into a tournament with more than enough players to do well. I think there will be some serious fallout in the next few weeks. There just seemed to be zero team spirit and unfortunately that is something you need even with good players. I am not sure what the management team were doing to foster team spirit and banter, but mentally we looked shot to pieces. You can talk about formations all day long but if you are not prepared mentally to get on the pitch and perform then it doesn't matter who you've got - you're basically screwed. Also - Philipp Lahm's comments were spot on; we didn't give Germany enough respect, just like we didn't give enough respect to the Americans, the Algerians or the Slovenians. The simple fact of the matter is that most nations have just got better and better over the past 20-30 years, and we just aren't light years ahead of them. Yet we as a nation seem to think it's our given right to p*** all over these teams and when we don't it comes as a massive shock. It really shouldn't! Unfortunately we are stuck in our own little world with the shining light of "The World's Greatest League" as some sort of justification why we should win tournaments. And to a certain extent, I expect a lot of the players think we're the best as well as they've never had the balls to go and ply their trade abroad, learn a different culture/language/way of playing etc. Our lack of footballing intelligence is frightening to be honest. The "golden generation" tag has possibly been one of the least appropriate tags you could wish to have though!
moon monkey Posted 28 June, 2010 Share Posted 28 June, 2010 Im sick of hearing about 'lack of pride and passion,' it is down to the number of foreign players in the premier league. It is their quality that brings out the best in Rooney, Lampard, Gerrard and Terry. There is a severe lack of technical ability that runs deep in English players. The English attitude of battling out wins is not enough.
david in sweden Posted 28 June, 2010 Share Posted 28 June, 2010 agree with that bit. IF... the Prem.is regarded as the BITW then it's because of the foreign imports, not despite them. There are TOO many imports and it's a good job that Capello didn't have to choose 40.. (as was the case in the 60's/70's) cos he'd be looking at CCC keepers and second rate strikers..not that our Prem. trio covered themselves in glory either... and WHY didn't he use Peter Crouch against those giant defenders, we came up against? It was pathetic to continue with high balls into the area when, at one stage, we had two strikers (Defoe and Cole) who were barely 5'9". Pathetic. Sorry Fabio..put them all back in the box and start again before 2012.

S-Clarke Posted 28 June, 2010 Share Posted 28 June, 2010 The only real class player to warrant the tag ''golden'' would be Beckham. The rest of the team are distinctly average and we just don't have the ability, until the FA start repairing grassroots football and get kids learning technique rather than kick and rush, it will always be the same. Totally agree. I'd like to see a different style of football encouraged starting in the lower leagues where thuggery is swiftly dealt with and the game is allowed to flow by referees far more which hopefully promotes pass and move. Look at Mexico last night, Argentina beat them but they outplayed them at times and they were so comfortable on the ball. Rooney's "world class" tag is an utter joke, he can score a million hat-tricks V Wigan and FC Lodz but he won't be judged as anything other than average until he does the business in 2012 and 2014. Like Owen, one good tournament and sporadic after that. Terry is well past it, look how poor he was last season. Heskey - Grant Holt or Lambert would have contributed more, we like players to appreciate fans, not play like them. I want to see chants of "you let down your country" at most of these idiots at every Premier League away ground next season, all season. Even their spiv agents can't insulate them from that. Until 2012, Wayne Rooney deserves to have "world cup flop" next to his name.
Tokyo-Saint Posted 29 June, 2010 Share Posted 29 June, 2010 Under 15’s should not be allowed to play on a full side pitch. They should play on small 5 a side pitches and learn about touch and technique. I remember as a kid playing on a full size pitch (or very close to) and the tactic being the big kid at the back kicks it hard behind the defence to the fast kid up front. The bigger the kid at the back and the faster the kid at the front the better the team. Having watched some junior football last year, it appears to be the same situation now. The team manager shouting “clear it” “get rid of it” “push up” and the all time favourite “get it to them!”. The result of this was evident on Sunday when James Milner’s first touch was so bad he even got tackled by the referee. The media always say it is passing, it’s not, the passing is fine it was the first touch. During this world cup our second touch was nearly always a tackle. It has nothing to do with passion either or the singing of the national anthem. It is down to ability, style of play and technique. All of this needs to be addressed at grass routes level. We don’t need kids playing on a giant pitch with an idiot shouting instructions.

Lampard aims a free kick straight at their (4-man) wall and Barry clubs the rebound straight to the other team who run down our end and score, and you could never describe Rooney's ball control as 'silky'. Lord Duckhunter Posted 29 June, 2010 Share Posted 29 June, 2010 Golden generation, my arse. The press suck up to the players and people like Redknapp and Andy Gray dont help, "take a bow son", and all that pony. Our players are the most over rated players in the world and yet the papers will turn round and blame the Manager, just like they blamed Taylor, Hoddle, Keegan, Sven and Maclearn. I turned on Sky Sports this morning to see John Barnes giving his opinion, John Barnes!!! Crap England player and hopeless Manager, giving his opinion. When The Kaiser gave his, he was ridiculed and the English players were going to use it as motivation, bloody hell how bad would they have been without that "motivation". We'll have the same old rubbish next season as Sky and MOTD, praise up Lampard, Gerrard, Terry, Rooney and Co, telling us how good they are. We stank the place out in Germany 4 years ago, we didn't qualify for the Euros 2 years ago and we were disgracefuly poor this time. 3 different Managers, but the same players, but it'll all be brushed under the carpet and no blame attached to the players. The press need their stories and exclusive interviews and the ex Pro's on the TV dont want to rock the boat. Fabio will be hung out to dry as the others were before. Meanwhile in the real world, it'll be another 45 years before we win anything.
