Terry Paine

The trio of Paine, davies and Sydenham was indeed a glory to behold to this, then, 9 year old. Sunny days at the Dell,

when losing didn't really matter and all it needed was a few crosses from either wing and a goal from Big Ron to make

it all complete.

Paine had a cunning mind and his passing was intricate. In his prime when Sir Alf, sadly. decided that out and out wing

play was not the way forward.

Used to watch him regularly at Hereford as we both moved there at the same time.

He absolutely ran the team that won successive promotions. Played in centre midfield by then and picked perfect pass after perfect pass all game. (rarely moved, though :) ).

Aren't we looking for a midfield general???

He scored the in the last few minutes of the Charlton games as well but the Leyton Orient Goal he scored right in front of me was probably the most important

That goal against Charlton is one of my all-time favourite Saints goals; Martin Chivers running what seemed the length of the pitch, then playing in TP for vital last minute winner. We'd never have got promoted that season without Terry - or stayed up the season after either IMO.

My nomination for greatest Saints player ever - even beats MLT.

Johnny Giles hated him with a passion as well.

I started going when TP Sydenham Davies Frank Saul (lol) were our forward line. Davies was our hero, but my fathers was TP (Charlie Wayman before him) He used to wind us saying Davies was rubbish and only Paine made him due to his crossing. then Mick Channon came on the scene and he became our new hero. Paine ruled the dressing room and LM had a bit of a power struggle it seems and survived some terrible maulings as the players allowed for some terrible defeats 8-0 at Everton being one. LM won that battle and Paine left the club.

I was stood in the lower Chocolate Box when Dave Webb passed the ball up the line to Martin Chivers who ran from just inside the Charlton half to cross for Painey to sweep home

Webby's pass went over the line so we should have lost the extra point for the win.

However luck was on our side and we won our last home game of the season and got a win and 2 draws from the three remaining away games to gain our first ever promotion to the top Level

nope

without beating Charlton at The Dell before the Leyton game would not have mattered

Although it was an important goal it was not as important as the Leyton Orient one.

If the Charlton game was 0 0 it was still possible to get promoted by getting two more points but the Leyton Orient goal clinched promotion

Not convinced it was the last home game,we had 3 away games to go at Plymouth, Leyton and Man City.

In many ways promotion was gained by winning at Plymouth

But at the time of the Charlton game anyone in attendance will tell you it was the most tense game played at the Dell

Yes I was there although it was tense it was not as tense as the FL cup Semi Final against Leeds when Terry Curran scored Early

I thought we beat Plymouth over Easter but I will check when I return from picking my daughter up from the Station
