Would you rather go out to the Germans or the Argentinians ?

Being a 40-something and not a 70-something, I would rather lose to Germany than Argentina.

The Falklands war rings more of a resonance with me than WW2, and I kind of have a grudging respect for Germans. Merkel commands respect more than that plastic over-made-up tart in charge of Argentina.

I would like us to beat both, but I reckon even the most optimistic amongst us (NickG ?) wouldnt bet on that.

Beating Argentina in 2002 was amazing.

The entire City of Sapporro went nuts in a party that lasted all night, the locals dancing on bus shelters and conga'ing as madly as the England fans. Bars were drunk dry, even Sky camera crews stopped filming to join the dancing. It seemed to mean so much more than beating Germany.

They are (and were) a better team and the history on the pitch with the Beckham incident seemed harsher.

I still have a framed photo of the scoreboard showing Argentina 0 - 1 England which will be the score this time

Losing to them would feel like losing to a team of CHEATS. Losing to the Germans would be meh, remember the 5-1.

In this Wold Cup though, IF we had to lose to one then it would have to be the Argies as it would mean that the interest in the WC had lasted a few days longer.

But we won't, it'll be the Brazilians that will puncture the over the top hopes of "The Nation"

Which would mean we've beaten them both

Maradona is great! What a character he is. The German coaches, in their cardigans, are hilarious. I reckon we can easily beat them on our day and there'll be no embarrassment to lose to a side that features an in-form Lionel Messi.

I guess what I'm saying is; I'd rather lose to Argentina but only if we put up a good fight. Jesus, even the Serbs beat Germany - we've every chance there.

Couldnt stand losing to that ***** Maradonna again.

Were going to win both games anyway so dont panic.

Diego Maradona has more talent in his left testicle than you will ever have in your whole body. He was the greatest player to ever kick a ball, forget the handball in Mexico, if Wayne Rooney did it you'd be laughing for years.

This thread should have been, who would you rather face in the 1/4 final South Korea or Uruguay. It'll be the same old England, going out to glorious defeat to gemany or the Argies with everyone forgetting the simple truth that had we topped a very poor group, we'd have had an easy run to the Semi's.

One Semi finalist will be USA,South Korea,Ghana or Uruguay, that hasn't come around by luck of the draw, or us being unlucky. It's come about because we couldn't score more than one goal whilst battering Slovenia and because we let Algeria get a 0-0. Algeria's last 7 games were 0-4 to Egypt,0-1 to Nigeria, 0-3 to serbia,0-3 to Eire 0-1 Slovenia and 0-1 USA, and of course 0-0 to England. I want England to win, of course I do, but if we go out to Germany or the Argies, I know how I'll feel watching USA or one of the others in the semi finals.

Germany, Argentina, Uruguay or the USA (perhaps), Brazil.

If we win this World Cup, we'll have accomplished more than any other World Cup winner ever. It looks highly doubtful.

I'd like to see us beat Germany and don't mind too much about going out to Argentina. Beating Germany would restore national pride, getting to the quarters was the minimum any England fan would have taken at the start of the tournament. Getting one over on that cheating anus Maradona would be so, so sweet though!

Too young to have seen Pele then?

Genius - over 1000 goals says so - and his performance in the 1970 World Cup was unbelievable.

No i would be not be laughing for years if Rooney did it. Like i wasn't when he dived to get a penality against slovenia last year and Gerrard did a few years back. Maradona's 2nd goal in that game was massively overrated too. In my opinion of course.

I'd rather go out to one of those 2 than possibly get sent home by Portugal again, in the Semi's. Still hate them for Euro 2004 (Not so much 2006)

But what an incentive for us - no further motivation should be required to get the team going now. Germany (Italia 90/Euro 96), then Argentina (Mexico 86) and then Portugal (Euro 2004/Germany 2006) - what an opportunity!!

I had to buy the green Asda T shirt with the Pele face in yellow dots.

Edson Arantes Do Nasciemento.

The nickname Pele is also afforded to a Godess.

How sublimely fitting!

Three accounts to settle then. No pressure, more an incentive!

C'mon England!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think it's good that we're having a big game at this stage personally...maybe they'll finally wake up and realise where they f::cking are...

Whoever we lose to, it'll be doubly worse if it's by bloody penalties again.

I listened to Calamity on Solent as I drove to work yesterday. He actually commented that England were poorly prepared about opposion penalty takers and their styles at the last world cup. Reckons we have done more prep this time. It's alright us saving them, we need to be blooming netting our own ones or, God forbid, doing a job so well that we don't need penalties!

Pele over Maradona any time and I'm lucky enough to have seen both. In terms of pure footballing genius Pele just edges it, in terms of just about everything else such as sportmanship etc; of course it is Pele by a mile. It makes me laugh when people say Pele was part of a great team, Maradona a great player in an average team. Brazil in the 60's and 70's were indeed superb but even then Pele stood head and shoulders above even the likes of Jairzinho and Co which was amazing. Argentina weren't that great in 1986 but then no side was and we all know how Maradona cheated to ensure Argentina beat a decent but limited England.

Do Germany hate us as much as we hate them? How do we also know Argentina hate us?

I think England V Germany is about loads of banter and a bit of mutual respect..and the burning desire to beat each other....a grand old fixture in football

England v Argentina on the other hand.....................

Germans do not hate the English, and I reckon the majority of English dont hate the Germans either.

Argentina, on the other hand.....

Having worked with Germans for the last 7 months, the majority of the workforce is German, then Poles, then English. I have to say that there is that mutual respect. Sure they exhibit a little teutonic arrogance at times but then there's plenty of bulldog macho at the same time but it is a mutual respect.

As to the Poles with the Germans? A different scenario altogether. But then that is understandable.

I work for a German company in Austria, and have many German colleagues. My boss is German.

Not one of them has ever given me sh*t over the football or because I am English. Unlike the locals, it has to be said.

I respect them, and they respect us, and the English tabloids are a f**king embarassment, especially the willful mis-translating and mis-representation of Beckenbauer earlier this week.
