Harsh. Making examples is ok ,but for hurling hub caps!!!

shame the lady judge was lenient when Pompey went to the High court after taking 138m of other peoples money

I dont agree, if a guy is on his fourth or fifth offence for the same thing then maybe, but to make an example of someone with no previous and who undoubtedly got swept away in the moment and is not a career criminal, probably has a job and maybe a family and is probaly actually a decent citizen then it is absoultely 100% wrong to pin them up as a deterant to other people.

12 men sentence to a combined 13 years put's the average sentence at 1 year. That does seem extreme, but does send out a message which is clearly the thinking behind the sentencing.

I agree causing £30000 of damage does not seem insignificant

You ignored the £30,000 of criminal damage. Also this may have been their last chance and were told if they did anything again they'd get a custodial sentence.

If they had a string of convictions and were told this was their last chance then maybe, but i'd bet at least half of those guys had nothing on their record and were not even know 'hooligans' to Hamsphire police. Now they will loose thier livelihood, have to spend time away from their families behind bars and then face trying to get a new job when they get out. Not condoning their actions but this is all so the government and police can go 'look at us., look at what a great job we do' its a disgrace

Considering their faces were plastered across the front of the Echo as part of a request for information by the police, I'd say it's pretty much guaranteed that they were unknown in Football "Intelligence" circles.

Are you thick?

The £30,000 of damage was not caused by just these 12 people you mong. That is the TOTAL, many of these are going to jail for simply throwing a coin and causing NO criminal damage. Look through the charges when they are released and see how many charges relate to criminal damage.

And most of the damage was caused by smashed windows on the cars caused by Skates throwing rocks into the garage.

Are you saying that them losing their jobs, having their lives turned upside down, children having their parents taken away is an acceptable punishment for throwing a fookin coin?

You seriously are retarded.

With all due respect, yes the sentances are a bit harsh, but i have no real sympathy, they should have thought about all that before hurling a coin etc.

yep, those hub caps are a grand a time. Every scratch and dent that had been on the cars would all of a sudden appear as criminal damage on the day. You know how it goes when people think they can make a claim.

I dont condone it, but passions rise and even sensible people can lose it. How long did those fans get for beating the yeovil fan outside the ground?

How ridiculous.

an utter disgrace. Yet more political sentancing.

Pathetic.

That's f*cked.

A ****ing joke. Sympathies to all concerned.

So if someone did £30,000 worth of damage to YOUR house or business you would be happy for them to get a community service punishment?

Yay! Yet more Stu petty insults! :D

So if that coin hit your child in the eye and blinded them would you be happy with the person picking up litter for two months?

Just a bit harsh? If it wasn't at a football match, they would have got an £80 or maybe a quick trip to the magistrates to get a small fine.

Take away the football element and if a group of adults, note the word adults - not kids, went onto a garage fourcourt and vandalised some cars and i'm sure you'd agree that the sentence fits the crime. I feel sorry for them as it was clearly a drink/drug fueled moment of tribal madness, but that doesn't mitigate the act according to the law.

You were doing fine until the bit in bold. A decent citizen is by my definition also a law abiding person. Wrecking the property of that Car dealer, even in the heat of the moment, is not the actions of a decent citizen.

I feel I will have to repeat myself time and time again on this thread.

How many of them were charged with Criminal Damage?

Most of the 'damage' was caused by skates throwing missiles into the garage denting cars and smashing windows.

it wasn't someone it was 100+ people but if some broke into my house and stole £3k worth of stuff, pro rataed per person i would expect them to only get a community punishment, because that is all they dish out these days. Dont forget the media exagerate these stories, i bet in reality the figure was nothing of the sort.

that's the point, if it happened elsewhere they would get a suspended sentence or community service. I dont condone the violence, but those fans were behind fences . if they had beaten up a fan, then I would be very happy with this sentence but it was posturing.

I think a fan on here siad that the police were out to make examples of these people.

Funny how W******d, who ****ed on the seats and was banned, was not convicted of indecent exposure and his banning order got lost.

We all break the law everyday, have never done 38 mph in a 30 zone? how many men have never had a fight? Not many i know, let he who is without sin..... The point is these guys day by day are probably decent, law abiding citizens, but they acted stupidly and have been punished for thier actions in a ridiculously over the top way just so the government and Hants OB can be seen to make an example of people, best legal system in the world? It is if your a repeat offender, if are a nornmal bloke you cross the line just once though you are ****ed.

To be honest, it sounds like they deliberately went to find the Portsmouth fans(so it was planned for a start) and then they started ripping bits off cars and throwing them... no, they deserved it.

Harsh sentences, however if you are stupid enough to do it/get caught then you must pay the price. Everybody knows they would be made an example of, so you can hardly complain and I have little sympathy.

Having said that a year for 'throwing a hubcap' as claimed, is ridiculous.

Until we've seen a more detailed account of the prosecution we really cannot quantify the level of guilt. I'm sure that the police had plenty of video evidence.

True mate, but it is what it is, we all know how the law takes sport related violence pretty seriously now a days, and in a lot of ways fair play.

I don't have kids yet, but if i was going to the football i certainly wouldn't want them in harms way because of a load of c*nts that can't control themselves for half a day. If you and me went at it for example and it was kept between me and you than fair enough, a fine etc should do it. But IMO when other people and peoples property are drawn inside the madness then they cause a liability to those families that do not want to get involved.

There were 100's of people involved so i would hazard a guess the sentances were not for bunging a 2p

I cannot generate an awful lot of sympathy for people who get involved in trouble and then have to face the consequences in the cold light of day afterwards. On the other hand, when you see serial offenders for burglary and acts of vandalism and hooliganism let off with repeated warnings, you cannot help feeling that there is a double standard operating here - especially if any of them were first time offenders.

I am pretty sure they all were charged with violent disorder. No mention of criminal damage charges... so linking them to £30,000 worth of damage to the garage as justification for their sentances just doesn't work.
