Red Alert Posted 19 June, 2010 Posted 19 June, 2010 What would the best XI be that has never played a single WC game? Was talking about this down the pub after the England game, who would you have? We had, Cantona, Giggs, Best, Le Tiss...
teamsaint Posted 19 June, 2010 Posted 19 June, 2010 Colin Todd and Dave Watson make a decent CB partnership
Badger Posted 19 June, 2010 Posted 19 June, 2010 George Weah Georgi Kinkladze or his cousin for that matter
Deano6 Posted 20 June, 2010 Posted 20 June, 2010 Neil Maddison Neil Heaney Neil Shipperley Perry Groves Craig Maskell Gordon Watson Dean Richards Chris Marsden Paul Jones Simon Charlton
dubai_phil Posted 20 June, 2010 Posted 20 June, 2010 Wayne Rooney? Well, he sure as hell ain't played in this WC
skintsaint Posted 20 June, 2010 Posted 20 June, 2010 played in the last one...before getting sent off.
dubai_phil Posted 20 June, 2010 Posted 20 June, 2010 played in the last one...before getting sent off. Yeah I know, I was there... but that didn't work for the humour part of it :-)
Joensuu Posted 20 June, 2010 Posted 20 June, 2010 Andrei Shevchenko when he could run Err... http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/world_cup_2006/teams/ukraine/4750211.stm ?
Arizona Posted 20 June, 2010 Posted 20 June, 2010 Roy Keane I think would be a candidate. And Shevchenko played in all 5 of Ukraine's WC games in Germany I think. Scored a couple too and missed one in a shoot out. From that neck of the woods, I'm not sure about Kanchelskis and Mostovoi. Arshavin definitely hasn't, although I'd hardly say he was great.
JackFrost Posted 20 June, 2010 Posted 20 June, 2010 Err... http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/world_cup_2006/teams/ukraine/4750211.stm ? strange I thought he missed out through injury. I stand corrected
Micky Posted 20 June, 2010 Posted 20 June, 2010 Eric Cantona never played in a WC....??? 'uck me, I never knew that...! Why not?
hamster Posted 20 June, 2010 Posted 20 June, 2010 Ryan Giggs? Ian Rush? Mark Hughes? in fact any welshman, lol. Has the great Duncan Edwards been mentioned yet? He was pretty good.
SuperMikey Posted 20 June, 2010 Posted 20 June, 2010 (edited) Eric Cantona never played in a WC....??? 'uck me, I never knew that...! Why not? He had a bit of a chequered past with international football, at one point he was even banned from international matches for a year after insulting the French manager on live TV! He was always involved in scuffles and fights when he played in France too, he racked up 5 or 6 club and international bans for his off-field conduct in the 8 years he played in France. At one famous disciplinary hearing, he was banned from football for a month after starting a fight at a training session while playing for Nimes, and when he heard the sentence he walked up to each member of the comittee and called them "idiot" right in their faces! He was banned for a further two months for that one... He actually retired from football altogether in 1991, but Michel Platini persuaded him to come back, he moved to Leeds and then Man Utd, and the rest is history! Great man, he gave the world my favourite ever quotation; "I have a lot of good moments, but the one I prefer is when I kicked the hooligan." Edited 20 June, 2010 by SuperMikey

Thanks for that - so all in all a pretty volatile character then. Would be quite interesting if he was in the current French squad after the recent goings on...!
