Turkish Posted 19 June, 2010 Share Posted 19 June, 2010 The gap is getting smaller and smaller between the top European and South American sides and the africans and asians. Japan ran Holland close and we've seen South Korea in he semi a few years back. Whilst the likes of Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Italy etc will always be strong, i wouldn't mind betting its not to many years before we see a winner from one of these contients. dune Posted 19 June, 2010 Share Posted 19 June, 2010 How long before an Asian or African team win the world cup? A long time. The Asian teams are organised and disciplined (in line with their culture), but they lack a lot of natural ability so ulimately they'll always be looking not to lose games as oposed to looking to win games. The Sub-Sharan African teams have the ability but (and i'm trying to be diplomatic) they mirror their culture of poor organisation and poor discipline so they lack the tactical nous required. View From The Top Posted 19 June, 2010 Share Posted 19 June, 2010 The Asian teams have all set up not to lose. We'll only be able to really gauge them when they set up to go for the win from the off.

Gorgiesaint Posted 19 June, 2010 Share Posted 19 June, 2010 Ghana are the best of the african teams at this world cup - but they've just proved against Australia why an african team will not win a world cup at the moment. They do ok as the underdog but when they are asked to make the game, they simply cannot do it.
JackFrost Posted 19 June, 2010 Share Posted 19 June, 2010 Asian teams are well organised defensively but don't score enough goals. African teams score enough goals but aren't good enough defensively. Plus regular watchers of the African Cup of Nations on here will know all about the dreadful standard of goalkeeping in Africa as a whole This is one of my personal favourites from this year's tournament http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZ_RyNBrsv0&feature=related

Sour Mash Posted 21 June, 2010 Share Posted 21 June, 2010 Won't happen for a long, long time. USA to win the world cup before an African or Asian nation does.
JackFrost Posted 24 June, 2010 Share Posted 24 June, 2010 Japan looking very handy tonight against Denmark. 2-0 up through two superb free kicks by Endo and Honda. Thoroughly deserve their lead. Denmark need 3 goals to avoid going out in the group stage.
Smirking_Saint Posted 24 June, 2010 Share Posted 24 June, 2010 Africa just don't have the funds to develop one of their own into a WC winning side in the short term, IMO. The Asian teams are also looking stronger and have more money to help improve the national team, the japanese league isn't a bad league TBF, i have seen a few games and i wasn't bored watching it, its quick and technical. Their teams are also organised and seem to play with a lot of passion and togetherness, something i think todays cash bloated stars lack (in all countries). USA will be a massive massive team in around 10 years i would believe, the national league is getting stronger and improving in technical ability and football is beginning to become a household sport over there, especially for the youth element who now participate in their droves. This linked with the fact that IMO they have a fantastic youth development programme that is the same sort of thing as the NFL in the MLS pick at the start of the season enables the lesser teams to get hold of the brighter talents... well... in essance anyways. This means unlike over here the young stars actually get competetive football.
alpine_saint Posted 24 June, 2010 Share Posted 24 June, 2010 I was talking to work colleagues in the US this afternoon. The WC has really caught the public imagination over there this time, its been getting equal billing to the end of the NBA playoffs. BUT it is still regarded as the sport kids do until they are strong and/or skilled enough to do ice-hockey or amercian football. Football is at a cross-roads in the US... Personally, I reckon an Asian WC winner isnt so far off (Africa is further away). Japan look bloody good, and made us look ordinary in Graz. The are well organised, attacking and score goals. And S. Korea came 4th in 2002, equalling our best effort of the last 20 years..
