saintbob40 Posted 29 September, 2008 Share Posted 29 September, 2008 Regarding 1:- We'll take all the points we can regardless of how we gain them. But realistically we ought to be beating teams like Doncaster if we are to have any hope of survival in this division. We ought also to be beating teams like Blackpool and Barnsley and although not in this division, Rotherham. But regarding our league position at the moment, the division is in fact made up mostly of teams better then us. Whether that situation persists until the end of the season remains to be seen. [-X On what basis ought we to be beating teams like Doncaster, Blackpool and Barnsley. Financial, playing staff, nice ground......or as I suspect we used to play Premiership football and we are a "much better/bigger club/team therefore than such teams with a god given right to win". I think a lot on this board struggle to accept the reality of our situation and look at things through their premiership tinted spectacles. Consquently, we have our fair proportion of delusionals (who cant accept where we are)and bitter/twisted depressives (who cant deal with where we are) who almost will the team to lose. A good away win on Saturday against a reasonable Championship team who may well stay up... a small step in the right direction. This young team and management deserve our support. They are not the ones who have put us where we are and on Saturday I saw a lot of effort and a good result. Lets enjoy the rollercoaster, so bring on Tuesday and COYR !!! Chez Posted 29 September, 2008 Share Posted 29 September, 2008 (edited) Yes my first away game this season and second game in total. A good result no doubt. Performance very average. Donny despite being woeful could have had 3 in the first half when KD was really excellent. Having been to every game home and away, nigh on for the last 40 years, til the start of this season and the retention of the thieving duo, will I return?? NO!!! what exactly has Lowe and Wilde stolen? Edited 29 September, 2008 by Chez
Torres Posted 29 September, 2008 Share Posted 29 September, 2008 The positives. We beat what was in front of us, but let me state that that was a Donny side short on confidence and lacking any cutting edge whatsoever. Davis continues to shine and saved well when Byfield was 1 on 1. His distribution was top class and his ground kicking even on his wrong foot was solid. Lancashire offers us some pace at CB. Mills looked terrific in what is only his third game. Not only might we have founhd a decent fullback but it will allow Surman to play further forward. Cork can play. I thought he was terrific at right back the other week and he looks as though he can play anywhere. He would be wasted at CB. Stern looked good for 5 minutes. Thats about it really. The negatives. James was and is terrible. I have bigged him up for three years as a CM. But he is the worst right back I have ever seen. Slow, poor distribution, crap in the air, appauling positional sense. He kept them on side time after time, dilly dallied on the ball andnearly cost us `shielding the ball off for a goal kick'. He is bad and we must try someone else. Pekart was terrible. He won next to nothing in the air, chased hardly anything, did nothing with the ball when he got it. Very dissapointing. He has not impressed me at all so far. He must improve a lot. McGoldrick scored, it was his goal, but he didn't do much for me. He is not a right midfielder and I don't understand why we play him there. Yes we won, yes he scored, but if we continue using him in this way we'll lose a lot more than we win. I feel sorry for James. He isreally, truly NOT a full back but is being asked to play there because we really have nobody else. He tries his best (I think) but is just not up to the job at the moment. His position had clearly been identifed by Donny as our weak spot and they hit it time and time again in the first half. Having said that, he was given next to no help by McGoldrick who did just wander around for most of the game. There seemed to be so many times that he should have been on his bike, making a run out wide and givin us another option - but he just didn't. When he did have the ball at his feet he looked decent (when he didn't get caught in position before offloading) but just doesn't do enough without it. Pekhart reminds me a bit of Crouchie, only without the touch and the willingness to work. For such a tall guy he seems to win absolutely f-all in the air. KD was outstanding all round , Ollie and Wotton were reasonably solid (despite being let down by James alongside them) and Mills looks a real decent prospect. HE still has a lot to learn (gave the ball away very stupidly on a couple of occasions) but seemd happy to get stuck in and challenge in the air, depsite being a tad small. I thought Cork was pretty invisible, as was Drew for the first half. Much better 2nd half though. Morgan was quietly effective and Lallana was busy and showed odd touches of class. Donny tried to play football and actually looked dangerous at times but once Byfield went off they offered almost nothing. A good 3 points, imo. The OS says we were playing a good old 442 with John and McG starting up front, Surman on the left of midfield and Lalanna on the right but people on here are saying McG was playing wide right. What bit are you arguing about, Bob? I qualified my statement in two ways. I said that we ought to be able beat teams like those I mentioned if we are to survive this division. I also said that the division is made up of teams better than us at the moment according to our current position. If we do survive, it will be because there are three teams worse than us. Care to name those teams that you consider fill those positions in your opinion?

TBF, I think they did kick off 4-4-2 but as soon as John went off injured, which wasn't that far into the game, McG moved out to the right. Care to name those teams that you consider fill those positions in your opinion? As we found out last year this is a very competitive league with everyone capable of beating everyone. There are no great sides and from what I have seen (so far) no absymal sides.Blackpool beat Birmingham away for example this season. My point is, in this league any victory away from home is a good one and teams like Doncaster, Barnsley and Blackpool should be respected as they will take a lot of points from other clubs. Having been to see the team get a good result on Saturday it is frustrating that this young and inexperienced team don't get the credit they deserve for this result because it was only Doncaster. hypochondriac Posted 29 September, 2008 Share Posted 29 September, 2008 Just saw the first penalty decision on saintstv and it's blatant.
mulletsaint Posted 29 September, 2008 Share Posted 29 September, 2008 Its hardly been one loss, has it ? And it was Doncaster Rovers, FFS.. I am quite aware how many games we've lost. However I'm pretty sure you were on here moaning after that first loss. Apologies if I'm wrong but let's face it, it doesn't take more than one bad result for you to start up again and this was my point. I feel a bit bad for constantly taking you to task recently, but your rather unbalanced take on things really gets my goat.
