Just got in from the game.

After watching the Rotherham game this was a joy to behold. Again our fans were superb. The Doncaster fans have been on Radio Sheffield moaning about their lack of volume.

From the commentary which means little it seems Wotton is a nop frills player that the we have needed for years. He just has nous(spl) and digs in when needed.

With everyhting we have been going through I can't quite believe we had a 1000 there. (958 to be exact...) A great away performance and well done to those that went....

Good result today and made even better by keeping a clean sheet.

Full credit to the 'boysh'.

Lets not get too carried away on here though, but enjoy the victory none the less!

Bollo, as an optimist I've the right to get carried away, at least until Tuesday.

Thank God for that. A failure for the strikers to get any clean goals again, but I'll take the three points. If we couldn't beat teams like Doncaster then we would have been in very deep trouble. It was a bit worrying how Doncaster were hitting the balls over the midfield and running on to them; shades of Hull last season when they thrashed 5 past us. Thankfully their finishing was poor and Kelvin was back for us. I hope that this gives the lads a confidence boost for the Tuesday game against Norwich, who will probably be much more of a test.

I take it you mean from the result, rather than your faint praise? Anyone would think you are actually slightly disappointed?

A good performance but there was still some poor defending. Doncaster kept using the diagonal long ball that caused LLoyd James problems all game.

Cork and Schniederlin bossed midfield and our pattern of play was definately disrupted when Morgan had to go off injured. I thought Olly Lancasire and Fish Mills had excellent games seeing both were only playing their second full appearances. Also Surman looked a completely different player, playing in his proper position (pity about the penalty miss).

A good win. But we were very poor against a hopeless Doncaster side whose only really tactic was to get the ball to the great oaf Price who would then run into our defenders to win free kicks. A decent team would have taken them apart. Indeed on the rare times we did play football, such as the build up to our first goal, Doncaster couldn't live with us, sadly they were few and far between us much of our play consisted of aimless hoofing.

There was absolutely no doubt about either penalty. How Hird, as the last defender, stayed on the pitch after the blatant trip for the second penalty, is beyond me. It was a tame effort by Surman as well and easily saved by Sullivan.

Peckhart would be a decent player if he had a first touch. McGoldick would be a decent player if he moved at all.

All in all though a good day out at a very nice stadium in lovely weather.

Having not long got back, I can honestly say that, at times, it was a case of total football going forward but it looked more like total b*ll**s when defending.

I'm happy that we won of course and we did play some good stuff, albeit in patches. We certainly weren't convincing, then again, neither did we look like a team that would be relegated.

First half I would say Doncaster were the better side, if it wasn't for Kelvin Davis then they might have been comfortably ahead, that's a measure of how much Davis has improved because he was outstanding again today and I can't believe that I was one of those in the 'Davis out' camp.

Second half we played some good stuff and I can't help thinking that with some inner belief and confidence we are a good side waiting to break out. I just got the impression that certain players didn't want the ball and were rushing to pass it on to someone else, instead of relaxing, looking up and making a more suitable pass or one that didn't put too much pressure on who was about to receive the ball.

Overall, we deserved the win but Doncaster were poor, so forgive me if I don't get too excited.

McGoldrick had another hissy fit when Surman wouldn't let him take the second penalty, he walked off giving it the big one and you knew then that Surman would miss after that little spat.

Special mentions to Kelvin Davis and Ollie Lancashire, I thought Ollie had an excellent game and didn't show any anxiety when going in for the challenge, which he could have done after his recent sending off. He looked composed and was constantly talking with Davis and Wotton and I hope he starts again as I think he wil work well with Svensson.

Right, off for a few beers, happy for a change on a Saturday evening.

Three points we badly needed and so lets take them for what they were against one of the weaker teams in the division. If we can follow this up with two more wins against Norwich and then Coventry I will be more convinced that this will work.

Just back from the game. First things first i have to laugh at those saying good peformance....was i at the same game? We were poor and so were they. If we had been there until next saturday playing we wouldnt have scored a goal. DMG missed some horendous shots, ones that BWP would of been slated for. Lallana had a free goal and somehow totally fooked up the header.

People praising Wotten have no clue. He was sat in front of the back 4 supposedly meant to be in the holding roll. Doncaster just punted it over him the whole of the first half and if it wasen't for Davis again would of conceeded many. The defence was just a joke.

2nd half it was the same. Except this time for the first time that i can remember in so long we finally got some luck in the shape of an own goal and a penalty that never was.

Thankfully it was not the other way around as i think if it was Doncaster who got that bit of luck they would of won. It was that type of game were i feel both teams were so poor neither deserved to win, it was always going to be a own goal or penalty that seperated the sided. And you know what? I will take that!! I dont care if it flys in off a players ass and into the top corner a goal is a goal and while their fans will bemoan the ref (who was **** to be fair) it is about time we had some things go in our favour for a change.

So while i have no doubt the deluded will come out in force and proclaim the second coming of christ etc.. this was a peformance that if was put in against anyone above the top say 15 would of been a hammering. Especially if Davis was not in form. But we will take it!

So the players done well and a win is a great result for us but they need to do better especially in terms of shooting. Lets hope this win gives the team a bridge to build from and gives them confidence to go into the next 4 games and get some results.

Onwards and upwards you lovely Saints now lets get three points against Norwich and move up the table. Even got the score right in my three guesses. Praise to JP your selection was right and hopefully Spiderman and John will be available soon...So pleased again..

Not sure where the "dodgy" penalty claims have come from - having been at the game, it was as clear cut as you could get, and I don't remember any of the Doncaster players complaining. In fact, the same goes for the second one, for which the defender should have been sent off.

First half was pretty even, they perhaps shaded it on chances, but second half we were comfortably the better side - I don't remember Davis making a difficult save after the break.

Well done lads, well done Jan.

Here's your problem Alpine, we win and you make no comment. Not asking it to change any opinions, but your positive support is invisible on here.

I think that if you read through some of the earlier threads today you will see that he has gone to a game in Austria somewhere. At least let they guy post his view on here first before you slate him eh - silence means nothing - he might not be home yet.

according to the radio he played CB until last 20 mins?

St Marco are you saying Wotton played in midfield?

Thought he played centre back today? Until Perry came on, at least.

No as far as i could tell it was 4-5-1 when John went off, before that Wotten was alongside Ollie in the centre.

Posted
Wotton was at the back alongside Olly Lancashire, and moved into midfield when Perry came on for Schneiderlin.

Well if that is the case he in my opinion was out of position for parts of it.

Just got back from Donny.

Good day out in Wethies and Salutation pub before the game.

Thought Saints rode their luck and still looked dodgy in defence and had to rely on the excellent Davis once again. Lancashire played better after a nervous start but the fullbacks are still the weak link and will be punished by better teams than Donny.

As with most games this season players seemd to tire after 70 minutes and started giving the ball away. Despite the woefull finishing and terrible final ball from the strikers when attacking often when a simple ball to a team mate would have put them clean through on goal, Saints ended up comfortable winners for a change. Cork (in midfield) had a decent game and Lallana impressed again.

Man of match Super Kelvin Davis.

I thought the first pen a little lucky but the 2nd clear cut. Thought the ref leaned to favouring us but hey who is moaning especially when I had a tenner on 0-2 and Surman to score first goal (after og still counts) at 125-1. Made the drive home a little more enjoyable especially as the other 2 in the car had done the same.

Posted

I thought he and Lancashire in particular played very well, particularly second half. We perhaps defended a bit too high up the pitch in the first half and got caught with a couple of long balls over the top, but they didn't have much to do in the second half at all.

Lucky in the sense that the Doncaster defender decided to put in a stupid challenge even though Lallana wasn't going anywhere, definite foul though.

A good, much needed win even if, reading the thoughts of those who were there, the performance was a little sketchy. Let's hope it restores a little confidence and provides us with a platform to build on.

Good to hear that McG had another tantrum. It wouldn't be a proper Saints game at the moment if he didn't spit his dummy out at some point. Just a shame that Stern's done his hamstring as I'd far rather see him and Pekhart up front, now we're apparently playing with 2 strikers (out of interest - can you have a formation if you're playing total football?)!

:oJust back. A hard fought but deserved victory. It wasn't a Derby or a Birmingham type performance but it was a discliplined, hard working performance that got what it deserved.

These kids showed a lot of character after a woeful CC exit.

Marks out of 10

Davies 8 rescued us a few times in frist half

Mills 7 very promising once more. Should get an extended trot as LB

Wooton 8 Good leader solid performer

Lancashire 7 Nervous at first but got better as the game went on.

James 6 Has a tendancy to drift in field and not perhaps a natural defender. Hung in there though and will improve.

Cork 8 my MOM. Worked tirelessly as holding mid where he looked v comforable. Had a hand in build up leading to first penalty.

Morgan 7 very good efficient performer. Hope hes ok, looked like hammy again.

Lallana 8 Talented and works hard. Destined for greatness if he stays away from fast girls and slow horses.

McGoldrick 7 Much better. I thought he worked harder today.

John-injured early on.

Peckhart 7 a handful. Not a bad player.

Surman 8 played well in a more advance role.

More of the same please. Delia get your rubber gloves on pet Ruperts on the prowl.........

sorry mate, not sure if I am being slow but in one post you say he was infront of back four and another as CB?

And this is what i love about football, a game of opinions :)

Also i thought the first penalty was a bit kind in all honesty, plus if it was a foul they should of also lost a player i thought?

The second penalty was 100% right.

What happened to Schneiderlin by the way? I saw he got a bit of a bad tackle from behind.

Yes. He was supposedly meant to be a CB in the first half but was defending further up then the line (in my opinion) then he went into the holding role when Perry came on. So translated means (in my opinion) in the first half he was to high up the pitch not really in a CB position of which they just hoofed it over him and that is where their chances came from. Hope that makes more sense :)

He is scouting for Saints in Austria. Game started after Saints. But give him credit he is doing the job for nothing.

Yes, you're right. I am slightly disappointed. I thought I made it clear when I said that we hadn't scored from open play again. I was happy that for once we had two strikers up front, but disappointed that John had to go off quite early and I hope that he isn't out for long. When we scored, it was massive relief, even though it was via an own goal and I was happy that we got two penalties. But I would have been far happier if the goals had been from open play, something that we have not been seeing a lot of in the last few games.

All in all a good enjoyable day out in the yorkshire sunshine. But be under no illusions, were we poor for 90% of the game, a fluky own goal and two penalties. Which i think were fouls but then again i have seen then not given before. After the 1st goal we were trying to play some passing stuff but then ran out puff, Donny had a strong penalty claim and a goal disallowed for offside. But today was our day, we eventually had a slice of luck or a rub of the green and to be honest, about bloody time. Although nearly 1000 of us there we were strangely quiet. Ollie and KD played well, but they knew our weak link was James and picked on him accordingly. But eh! who cares we won so bring on Norwich, hopefully we'll get 12000 after this result.

Apparently took a knock to his other leg and is out of the Norwich game, which is abit of a blow.

Sponsored by muffins - the new doughnuts.

An o.g. from an ex. Saints and a dodgy penalty, but I'll take that the way things have been going.

Dodgy penalty?

I was at the game and it was a stone waller.

To be honest, the first goal should count as a Saints goal from open play. McGoldrick did all the hard work and his cross/shot across the face of goal would either have gone in on its own anyway or would have been converted by Surman (I think) who was rushing in on it at the far post.

Cheers, mate.

I have heard nothing about the manner of performance today, but followed by WAP.

I am delighted that we won 2-0, but am somewhat worried about the manner of victory against what was, according to the few posts I have read on here tonight, a very poor opposing team.

Let's see if our new-found taste for victory extends to beating Norwich at home before rolling out the bunting and getting all euphoric, eh ?
