1-0 vs Coventry away I think. Egil. Can't be arsed to look it up either but I was at that one and I seem to remember it being the last time. Amusingly, it was our first first game win in about 14 years as well.

The loss at Villa in 2004 was 3-2 wasn't it?

That was at St Mary's towards the end of the season. How can anyone not remember that game? I still have nightmares.

We should have won in 2006 but Paul Peschisolido got an injury time leveler.

Well, I should make the game as I'll be over, but I have a very bad record. Last Boxing Day (ptthhssst) was the first win I'd seen since moving over here.

The Plymouth game will be very interesting indeed. Apart from being at home, it will be a good demonstration of (a) our summer preparation (b) whether this team really can mix it at CCC level. Can't wait TBF.

We won opening day games in 1988, then 11 years later in 1999, so another 11 years on is...........2010. I see a sequence emerging ;)

I do remember that game, I just thought we lost the first one 3-2 as well.

The 2-0 opening day defeat at Villa was a truly appalling display and one that set the tone for the whole season. The only highlight was Niemi punching Prutton in the face after we had given away a soft corner. Unfortunately, he still had his gloves on and it didnt hurt the tw at.

You are correct, first win that season was a 3-2 home win against Blackburn, then Sturrock got sacked and Alan Hansen said we look like a team that was going to struggle, naively i thought he was wrong and we'd sort it out.

I think the last home win was 1988 v West Ham, despite the fact that nearly all (c20?) of our opening games have been at home.

It was 4-0 tho, with a great 4th from MLT.

I remember that game well. I went with my Dad and he picked an Archers turnstile and we ended up stood with the West Ham fans.

I also recall "You came" by Kim Wilde played over the tannoy at half time.

if we continue to always play teams 'to get fit' only and play just one half decent team in the Ted Bates trophy we will continue to be ill prepared for the real games.

I wonder where we might be touring this pre season? Farnborough - Salisbury, Eastliegh, a list of Swedish part time lumberjacks the redicilous list of pointless useless preparation games is endless.......Get a grip Saints and get some ambition by playing decent opposition and preparing to win the first game!

In short, we are never up to speed at the start of the season for this reason..........................

When Dean Richards made his Saints League debut, 1999/2000.

And Matty in the seats with the away supporters :scared: .... änd we've still got Matty in the stands" ... after we took the lead, made a change from "still got Matty on the bench"
