for_heaven's_Saint Posted 10 June, 2010 Share Posted 10 June, 2010 Would rather have two up front and a little more pace. And no Seabourne. Yeah to be honest I agree, I probably wouldn't actually play both Harding and Dickson, was just trying to see how we could fit them both in. Smirking_Saint Posted 10 June, 2010 Share Posted 10 June, 2010 I can see us playing 4-2-3-1 next season, it served us better last season and we have the players to make it work (providing we sign a couple of midfielders). Its more flexible IMO
david in sweden Posted 10 June, 2010 Share Posted 10 June, 2010 Harding won't play at right back, apart from emergencies. He's totally left footed. He held an end up in the two games he played there, but it restricted him so much not being able to get crosses in without stopping and coming back onto his left foot. Any fool could see that. Change of tactics Chez. new Pardew formation. we play with two left backs, two left sided midfielders and a left winger. Why all this obsession with right-sided players ...? Arizona Posted 10 June, 2010 Share Posted 10 June, 2010 Assuming Dickson does/has signed I would hope it is as a LM competitor for Lallana, as opposed to a LB. We have two quality LBs in Harding and Mills. 3 is just pointless, costly and breeds disharmony. I can't see either Harding or Dickson being content spending the entire season in the reserves. RB? F**k me, haven't you lot learned from Wright and Skacel? Hopefully Molly and Holmes will find another club sharpish.
saintwarwick Posted 10 June, 2010 Share Posted 10 June, 2010 Would rather have two up front and a little more pace. And no Seabourne. Still, not far off a great team. Me to especially at home games, we need to dominate teams at St Marys. Seabourne to be on the bench. Just need to sort out the right back now

Dark Munster Posted 10 June, 2010 Share Posted 10 June, 2010 We don't need to play Harding at RB, since we are about to sign that Spanish RB from BHA that Poyet promised would not be playing for them again. Oh.

david in sweden Posted 11 June, 2010 Share Posted 11 June, 2010 (edited) Not a chance. Although he did very well there in the JPT Final he only played there because Thomas, Murty and James were all out injured and Semi was cup-tied. Actually, this is another one of Alpine's ridiculous threads. ...is it SO RIDICULOUS ...? Was Harding totally useless at right back...or ?. Just because he came to fill the LB slot doesn't it mean he can't play RB? No player starts his career with LB tatooed on his back, and good players can play almost anywhere. Nick Holmes debuted at LB, but it didn't stop him playing both RB and RH (right midfield) as well as inside left then several more years at LB, before having 4 seasons at right wing after Ball had gone. David Peach , a recognised LB also played left midfield and as a striker on occasions and Manny Andruszewski played both right and left back in the late 1970's. Frannie Benali was a goal scoring striker and played for England schoolboys before switching to LB. and Alan Shearer ('though not a defender) was goalkeeper with Newcastle's Boys team before joining Saints youth side in his early teens. Older fans will recall the legendary (my words) ex-Everton star Jimmy Gabriel 1967-72 who played in FOUR different positions for us in his first season...and also was sub.goalie on one occasion. He later also played as a striker AND right back. Jeff Kenna and Simon Charlton played in both full back positions, as did Claus Lundekvam who played his first full season at LB before switching to central defence. The much-maligned (by some) but versatile Rory Delap played his first games at RB, but later played at both right and left midfield and also left winger. I don't know AP thoughts about the LB slot, but Dickson is touted as the best LB outside the Premiership and Harding (one of the finds of the season) will surely find a position somewhere....so why not at right back ? There are two months until the season starts. Quit moaning. not a moan, just wondered who is available? I didn't see too many right backs that impressed me last season. Shaleum Logan looked terrific but I'm not sure City will let him go or he would be willing to move to a League 1 side, even one on the up. Obviously there are players in the league below and above that might fit the bill. Ideas?

david in sweden Posted 12 June, 2010 Share Posted 12 June, 2010 (edited) Because he is not right footed obviously he can play the odd game there He is as Left Footed as Sydenham was or still is probably Who was the last regular RB who was left footed OK that's the answer then, but does that rule out the possibility that two-footed players still exist, and are capable of playing both sides. ? Statisically, only one person in four is left-handed, even fewer are both left handed and left footed, and a proportion of those are ONLY right-footed (e.g. one of my sons), and because of that most teams have right-sided attacking formations, and are desperate to find ANYONE who is left-footed (we had that problem inbetween the Bridge-Bale period). In consequence, overlapping full backs are usually right-sided and always look good because they have less defending to do when the opposition create attacks. Our left flank rarely looked better than when we had Bridge and Marsden, and when Bale was a lone attacker but who was criticised for his poor defending.! Perhaps AP is looking to revive an attacking strategy that is left-sided and not the traditional right-sided methodology...? Agreed, It doesn't solve todays " problem " about a RB, (but then again the season doesn't start till August and there's still time) ..but it does provide a possible answer to the question of why the sudden interest in left-sided players. saintwarwick Posted 12 June, 2010 Share Posted 12 June, 2010 I meant, I am not having a moan at you, but who else is out there for us as Calderon was THE target. We are primarily supporters not scouts, I'm sure AP has scouts out and about looking at other players, let's hope we find someone decent as I don't think Harding is the answer for a season, only maybe as a back up.
