oxfordshire_saint Posted 6 June, 2010 Posted 6 June, 2010 1986 - Hand of God 1990 - Gazza's tears, penalties 1998 - Beckham's petulance/Simeone's cheating 2002 - Ronaldinho's free-kick 2006 - Ronaldo's wink, penalties Seems that over the last few world cups, we always have some sort of controversy or scapegoat. How boring would it be if we just got knocked out 1-0, by a better side and with a perfectly legitimate goal with nobody really at fault for it?
sadoldgit Posted 6 June, 2010 Posted 6 June, 2010 The best squad we had was after the 1966 victory. Our 1970 squad was better but as above their were odd things that happened. Moore was arrested for suposedly stealing a bracelet and Godron Banks went down with Monezuma's Revenge before the Germany game (whn ramsey also made his biggest gaff by taking off Charlton). The fact is though, we don't win the tournament because we are not good enough.
SNSUN Posted 6 June, 2010 Posted 6 June, 2010 Quarter Finals, France vs England, lose 2-1, ball bounces in off Anelka's willy for the first, Henry palms it in for the second. England and Republic of Ireland fans riot against each other as to whom was more hard-done-by by Henry's cheating. Consolation goal scored by Terry, who then picks up a groin injury that'll rule him out of football action for two months, and out of bedroom action for a year.
Dark Munster Posted 6 June, 2010 Posted 6 June, 2010 Either get outclassed by Spain/Brazil/Argentina, or get beaten by penalties (again).
dubai_phil Posted 6 June, 2010 Posted 6 June, 2010 Limply and with a whole raft of If Only's and So Nearly's. We're England, it's what we do (since 1990.)
Kingsbridge Saint Posted 10 June, 2010 Posted 10 June, 2010 We will almost certainly go out on penalties. The knockout stages will be as tight as gnats chuff and penalties are nailed on for England. Lampard is starting to choke from 12 yards, and we know one of Capello's interview answers was 'there is no point in practising penalties'........
The9 Posted 10 June, 2010 Posted 10 June, 2010 I note the eventual penners loss in 1998 has been glossed over. Rather takes the shine off what was a very good 10-man performance. "Quickly, is he going to score Kevin ?" Glad I was in Lyon watching it in my hotel so I only had French commentary (not so glad I'd sold my match ticket earlier in the day, but it paid for the 3 weeks I was out there...)
Crab Lungs Posted 10 June, 2010 Posted 10 June, 2010 Still going for me 2 year prediction of elimination... in the final :-(
The9 Posted 10 June, 2010 Posted 10 June, 2010 Passed to death in the final by Xavi and his pals. Semi-Final then, unless they finish in the same positions in their respective groups in which case the Final.
Draino76 Posted 10 June, 2010 Posted 10 June, 2010 Socrates thinks England will win so, I am going with my main chain smoking legend of a man on this one.
James Posted 11 June, 2010 Posted 11 June, 2010 well its about time another hapless central defender took the blame for missing a penalty. Dawson to miss in the final v Spain in the shootout.
