Ponty Posted 1 June, 2010 Share Posted 1 June, 2010 Yeah, watched it. The Schumacher incident was a glaring omission but it wasn't the Ronaldo wink that should've given way for it. The Romanian hair-dying incident?
St Landrew Posted 1 June, 2010 Share Posted 1 June, 2010 Schumacher still doesn't see he did anything wrong, after all these years. He knows he committed a foul, even though incredibly, the decision went his way. He just thinks what he did was necessary. This was the first time the word FIX began to rear its head, in the modern era, as I remember. I wouldn't want to win anything his way.
Saint137 Posted 1 June, 2010 Share Posted 1 June, 2010 The fix in '82 was before the final - Germany & Austria carved up the final game to ensure both qualified at Algeria's expense. At least they are only remembered for Schumacher's attack on Batiston, whereas anyone who saw it live will only remember Italy vs Brazil (bizarrely a 4 o'clock kick off that I rushed home from school for) and of course Tardelli's goal celebration... True, but that was why they changed it so both final group games are played at the same time - and is anyone really going to say that had it been England + someone else in the same boat, we might just have got the result as well? Schumachers foul was disgraceful, but the real shame is that that Semi v France is remembered for that rather than the 3-3 which was arguably one of the games of the worldcup - end to end stuff and cracking goals... I always remember that incident as well as the fantastic through ball by Platani. If Battiston's shot was on target it would have been a goal. As it missed, the ref gave a goal kick to the Germans. Battiston was knocked unconcious, lost three teeth and twisted his vertebrae.
oxfordshire_saint Posted 7 June, 2010 Share Posted 7 June, 2010 I'd be interested to see how FIFA would react if someone nowadays tried to give another player some Frank Rijkaard "hair product"

The9 Posted 8 June, 2010 Share Posted 8 June, 2010 I really enjoyed this programme, reminded me of a bunch of awesome World Cup moments, even though it was clearly researched by a 15-year-old work experience who had been told not to include anything before 1990 if it could at all be helped. Notable omissions (I think, might have missed them on the programme) - The entire Kuwait team walking off in 1982 after a phantom whistle - The Spanish disallowed goal against South Korea in 2002 when the ball was nowhere NEAR going out - Schumacher / Battiston - The abysmal 1990 final as a whole - Baggio's penalty ? SNSUN Posted 8 June, 2010 Share Posted 8 June, 2010 I wouldn't blame Seaman for Ronaldinho's goal in 2002. That was a one of a kind shot that most, if not all, keepers wouldn't have got to.

St Landrew Posted 13 June, 2010 Share Posted 13 June, 2010 Anyone just see this? Schumacher taking out Battison in '82 was nowhere to be seen and instead we got Ronaldo winking. Annoying yes, shocking? No. Ch4 are doing the 100 most shocking moments. It actually looks like the same people being interviewed, or even the same programme with 50 extra moments. Schumacher's foul was featured at No.49. Looking at it again, it looks like an assasination attempt, rather than a block. I didn't know it, but Schumacher offered to pay for Battiston's capped teeth. That's the first time I've ever heard reports that he might have been slightly responsible. People may forget, that not only wasn't Schumacher sent off or booked, but it was signalled a goal-kick because Battiston touched the ball last. Significantly, Schumacher never got near it.
