Adu link

I can't understand some of the negative reactions we are getting on here...he is clearly of a ''decent'' calibre and therefore more than good enough for us....add to that he has international experience in a very decent side, has played for top european football clubs, is still only 20 i think...and he is known internationally.... I'm sure Nike are all over him and millions of 'soccer' fans in the USA. It could be a huge commercial coup for us and a bloody good signing on the pitch too!

"Adu recently finished a loan spell with Greek club Aris Thessaloniki and will return to Portugal for the 2010/11 season with Benfica."

http://www.tribalfootball.com/benfica%E2%80%99s-adu-switches-agents-863501

According to what I've seen (albeit on Wikipedia) the loan with Aris was 18 months and only started in Jan 2010. So it's not just finished, he's still there til the end of next season?

Loans can be paid off or ended like Saints did with the Puncheon loan to MK Dons when they signed him from Plymouth.

the article states that we'll have to come to an agreement with the greek club too. Similar to what happened with the Punchon deal (as his mk don's loan was cut short)

No doubt about it, if we got Freddie Adu, it would be an amazing signing. He would terrify teams in this league and would surely be pretty decent in the championship, and young enough to stay for a while. Would really turn some heads too.

I still just can't see it happening though.

Right time for another OOO news round up

He turned down Hull and the premiership in January in order to go to play in Greece

http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/news/Freddy-Adu-turns-down-Hull-City-in-favour-of-Greek-loan-move-article279463.html

Do we really think he would step down 2 divisions from there (or did he turn it down purely becasue it was Hull? It is an awful place)

Meanwhile from earlier in the month the Yanks (and this is purely american "soccer" fans) reckon he should stay in Greece and then return to replace Donovan at Galaxy

It would appear that this story is starting to surface in America though, all be it in the rumours pages

http://www.soccer365.com/english_premiership/story_26510195119.php

Also being mentioned on the Utd pages

http://www.redcafe.net/f60/usa-announces-23-man-roster-297266/index2.html

As well as most interestingly being mentioned on Benfica pages

Ans has been picke up by other news pages in Portugal

I know that I'll be inundated by the oh-so predictable wave of anti-US and TT knockers, but I'm gonna say this anyway 'cause it just don't bother me.

Firsty as Rabbit says, this would be an incredible signing he is the same age and more effective than Theo (innnnnnnnncoming). He would tear Div III cloggers up for @ss-paper. He is fast, skillful, resiliant with a fantastic attitude. He has been thru' a brutal apprenticeship with some of Europe's best since he was barely a child.

He is potentially a superstar waiting to happen - and (here's the punchline) I just cannot see him coming to Saints...I wish he would. Hey, this could all be rubbish, I have been known to get things wrong...

I think the Adu rumour has been put out there to throw other clubs off the scent of our prime target.

I can reveal Saints have infact been tracking another former child prodigy:-

gary-coleman1.jpg

I sent him a "tweet" to see if he knew about our interest.

He replied "What you talkin' bout Willis";)

He's originally from Ghana - I've worked with a football academy in Ghana and all the boys are registered several years below their real age - normally 2-4 years. I've seen a 16 yr old registered as 11 so he could play in an under 12 team - its why Ghana and Nigeria perform so well at under 20 level and fifa want to introduce bone scanning... I doubt he is 20... would still be a brilliant signing tho

He isn't a Striker. He is a midfielder... Who can play as a forward.

Maybe you're right, but he keeps on being labeled "striker" and "forward" when you start reading up on him.

What's more is that he has only played 45 first team games in the last three years. Before signing for Benfica in 2007 he had a lacklustre period with Real Salt Lake. He never broke into the Benfica side and was loaned to AC Monaco for a year, not to learn, but with "an option to buy". Monaco didn't excercise the option, because Adu didn't make it. After that he hasn't made it at Belenenses, and he has recently struggled in Greece.

The Youtube pictures shows a very young man with an impressive box of tricks. According to those who have followed him he hasn't retained the tricks, and not learnt the tactics of the game.

I haven't seen him play at all outside the Youtube clips, and maybe he would be worth a punt, but he has got a lot to prove. Nothing to get prematurely excited about.

OOO's further news roundup

Currently being discussing on the Brighton forums. Including a special mention for Hypo's tweet

http://northstandchat.com/showthread.php?p=3523850

From the echo

http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/8137346.Saints_transfer_rumours_round_up/?action=complain&cid=8535924

Also reported here, where interestingly enough someone claims Tyson is on his way to Saints as well

http://www.football-rumours.co.uk/

Being discussed here, where Hypo brings it to their attention

http://www.footballforums.net/forums/showthread.php?t=252627

Bizzarely an Online Finance Blog reports the story

http://onlinefinanceblog.com/general/loan/southampton-trying-to-secure-permit-for-benfica%E2%80%99s-adu/

"We are football" run with it

http://www.we-are-football.com/posts/triballfootball-2010-may-27-southampton-trying-to-secure-permit-for-benfica-s-adu

Meanwhile Yahoo Sport Australia has

http://au.sports.yahoo.com/football/news/article/-/7302917/

What is interesting is that most are using Tribal Football as their source.

No smoke without fire? Or is it simply the latest in a long line of football rumours which come from nowhere and end up where they started.

I'll keep digging!

I listen to the BBC World Football podcast and the North American football expert always bangs on about that, he think he's closer to 24/25.

You had to see the first films and clips of him here, he was just a little boy, but then again what do I know, I mean I didn't even realize there was no such word as gullibility??

Someone that works for Crystal Palace told me Victor Moses is in his mid 20's.

As for Adu, would be a big statement of intent if we signed him.

There's no way Kanu is 33 or Yakubu is 27 either. I honestly wouldn't be suprised if Kanu was closer to 50 than 33.

Would be a good signing...will get us noticed more. But he hasn't fulfilled the potential he was given as a 15 year old. Much like Walcott.

If he turns out like Walcott I'd be more than happy. Lee Holmes might be a better comparision, set for huge things as a 15/16 yr old and never really forfilled it.

Although if he's been playing for Benfica, Monaco and Aris then he should be quality at this level. 5 goals in 19 games at Benfica, probably most of his appearances were as a sub as well, so not too bad.
