Lump in throat moments

The "My way" video at the end of Le Tissier's testimonial....

Whenever I watch footage of Rodrigues lifting the cup in 1976

During "abide with me" at Cardiff in 2003.

That Le Tissier goal against Newcastle.

This. I tried to sing it, desperately wanted to sing it and just couldn't.

You are a brave man. But, I'm with you on this one!! Never a consistent performer, no idea why he gets looked on so fondly (he had some spectacular moments obviously, they were just very sparse...)

I remember him so fondly for being the little guy from a country hardly anyone had heard of at the time, not being able to speak a word of English, not evening owning his own pair of boots, but scoring 3 truly priceless goals that kept us in the Premiership in the 98/99 season.

Fantastic skill, great speed, and scorer of some truly fantastic goals whilst here, against Derby and Wimbledon at the Dell stick in my mind.

Fair enough he was a sicknote towards the end of his time here, and he was mentally unable to recover from injuries that he was physically able to but his goal and celebration against the skates cements him as a bit of a modern day legend for me,and I expect many who are quick to slate him never even saw him play.

One of the anniversaries of the Cup win at The Dell, on the Archers, trying to sing my heart out for Bobby Stokes.

Abide with Me @ Cardiff

The sheer noise from St Marys in the SF against Wolves, when I started to believe we might be going to Cardiff and started thinking of my Grandad who wouldn't be there.

Topping it all, saying goodbye to Marian...

Firmly believe that if sport doesn't make you well up from time to time its not worth watching, its all about the emotion and the passion.

Undeniably " Abide with Me" in Cardiff, 2003. I was not only proud of Saints, I was proud of Saints fans.

Missing out on signing on Jack Rodwell.

Would you mind terribly of I knocked one out looking at your Avatar

I agree with this.

Anyway mine are:

FA Cup Semi Final, it was my first proper memory with Saints. The noise when that final whistle went....

Marian's goal vs Pompey, fantastic finish and the celebration showed how much the club means to him.

Henri Camara's last minute goal vs Norwich, what a game.

Saying bye to Marian.

Wolves 0-6 Saints, I went up there to see we had no Bale, Baird or Rasiak. I was sure we'd lose..... It wasn't even a game that deserved a 6-0 scoreline, if anything Wolves were the better side! :D

Rasiaks late winner vs Derby, I know we lost but the amount of fight we showed that night was great. ****ing Leon Best and II....

Our game at Forest, I really thought it was the last time I would see this club play. The atmosphere from us was awesome.

The JPT final day, just the whole day was great. A sea of red and white from the moment I stepped off the train and Waterloo, the party atmosphere at the green man, the 4-1 win and seeing us lift a cup!

as only one of the younger fans - mine are:

-being on holiday and getting the text through that we were relegated from the prem in 2005

-Alan Ball's day against southend

-when we lost on pens in the play-off semi

-walking on the SMS pitch for the first time when celebrating staying up in a division we didn't want to be in in the first place in 2008

-realising the mess we were in halfway through the 2008/09 season

-the massive support for the players and staff who came to applaud us at forest away in 2008/09

-the 'we will never die!' poster at forest away

-walking out of the City Ground, Notts Forest after seeing my beloved club play for the final time (i thought) and a forest fan on the upper tier saying 'come straight back up' as we were applauded out by the forest fans

-losing to the skates this season and looking my mate in the eye as we met outside

-watching the massive Saints banner being flown at Wembley as 53,000 fans made a sea of red & white and a hell of a lot of noise and Kings & Queens by 30 Second to Mars being played

-the whole 53,000 standing up and singing 'All Southampton' just after we went 4-0 up

-watching Kelvin and Deano lifting the first Saints trophy in my lifetime

Seeing Steve Mills on the pitch before the charity match at The dell that he'd organised for a Leukemia Charity. He was a shell of the man who had such a great career ahead of him till he was injured in a car crash and then succumbed to leukemia. You could see just being there took a great deal of effort and he was being supported by his wife. Christ he was just into his 30's. Sadly he passed away a few weeks later I think.

Listening to the commentary on Ocean ? on the Internet out here(before Saints TV and Solent had the Francaise) of the last game at The Dell and of course the fairy tale ending with Matty scoring that last goal. The Commentater Hook ? went absolutely ballistic and was screaming something like "and if that isn't a good enough reason to go out and get p!ssed tonight i don't know what is":p. I was jumping about like a loon and screaming like a mad man, and yes, tears of joy. Don't actually remember the rest of the match.

Watching The JPT Cup being lofted at Wembley on TV in France was pretty good as well.

I am old enough to remember most of the above. Matty's last goal at the Dell has to be the most emotional football "moment" of my life but for sheer, unbounded joy it is still Mickey Channons testimonial just two days after winning the cup.

Only twice :

Matty's winner in the last 'proper' game at the Dell - nothing could ever top that emotion and I didn't bother with the Brighton game after that

And

Beatties in the semi at Villa Park - having seen us lose three semis in the 80's this was the goal that finally laid those ghosts to rest ...

In a very solemn and eerie way,one other heart chilling moment was the minutes silence at The Dell for the victims of the Bradford fire.

I think it was the Tuesday afterwards, the ref stopped the game on 11minutes as that was when the fire broke out,and it was observed impeccably by all supporters without any daft bastards idea of "humour" breaking out.

Can't recall who we were playing, recollection of Liverpool but don't think that is correct.

agree about MLT...when it finally hit me it was all over at his testimonial..it was really emotional....the bloke was a farking legend for me..I started watching saints when I was 5 in 1985..and pretty much grew up watching his whole career....

but realising it was all over was sadnes and celebration all rolled into one..

I really feel so so sorry for those who never saw him at his best for us....one of the greatest natural talents this country has ever produced..but in some ways wasted on the international scene

anyone who wasn't moved by Matt's goal against Arsenal at The Dell has the emotional detachment of a serial killer and should seek immediate counselling.

I think we've established since that the whole ground was choking back a tear and covering it up by putting on sunglasses or coughing in a manly way.

Relegation is a slow and predictable process and for me is less sad than leaving a ground which holds so many memories - it's saying goodbye to decades of your life and to many people, and Matt provided the perfect farewell moment.

3rd April 1976 The Shed End Stamford Bridge. The players celebrating, the fans celebrating - Saints were in the FA Cup final at Wembley. What an atmosphere.

Having been to the 1963 semi final - the worst day of my young life till then and having been relegated in '74 Saints had seemed to be on the way down again. I had almost given up hope that Saints would ever get to Wembley in my lifetime ( no play offs or JPT in those days) but at that moment my football fan's ambition had been fulfilled and sweet revenge against the Mancs was just around the corner.

3rd April 1963 - There didn't used to be much singing at football in those days, the Liverpool kop had just got started and Spurs had there "glory, glory Halleliujah". All we had was "2-4-6-8 who do we appreciate".

Any how it's full time at the Dell and Saints have just made the greatest come back in the history of football ever. Unless you were there you won't believe me. They have come back from 3-0 down with 17 minutes left against a top division team to draw 3-3 in the FA Cup 6th round replay ( Saints were in the 2nd division) When the equaliser went in the noise was unbelievable - imagine the MLT last ever goal at the Dell but with twice as many people in the ground. That is not my lump in the throat moment however.

There is now a lull as we await extra time and the crowd try to draw breath and take in what they have just witnessed. I hear a banging sound, at first I thought it was a thunder storm brewing, it gets loader and then I realise it's the West stand stamping their feet ( the West staand were normally very quiet- imagine the Chapel but twice as bad) and then for the first time I hear those imortal words........."oh when the Saints"

That is my lump in the throat moment.

Football changed forever that night.

Don't think I can recall what you would call a "lump in the throat" moment. Sheer joy of course when Bobby Stokes scored at Wembley, Armstrong scoring a last minute winner v Man Utd, MLT's last goal etc; etc;

On the negative side was sad when we got relegated in 1974 but always felt we'd be back, then of course relegation in 2005 though that was coming for quite a while, so many great Saints dying and so on.

Matty's goal against Arsenal, cried like a loon and found it really tough to keep the emotions in check when I was lucky enough to meet him at the London Saints party after the game.

Abide with me in '76 as well as at Cardiff, and the National Anthem at Wembley for the JPT, seemed every single one of us knew what that moment REALLY meant, we had survived and we were on the way back, and strangely it all happened again at the end when they played "The Saints are Coming" hair standing up on back of neck as well at the symbolism.

And the daftest one, half-way down Cader Idris in Wales in '76 on a school trip when we managed to get radio reception and find out we were winning the SF against Palace, (Although that could have been for one of our group jumping up and falling into the lake)

I suppose like many the biggest one for me was the last ever game at The Dell when Matty scored the winner.

It was a very emotional day for me anyway. I left home in the early hours and arrived in Southampton without a ticket. Got talking with some mates who tried to tap Matt Oakley for a ticket for me. Didn't get in and stayed in the car park until HT when everyone was ejected so the smokers in the West Stand could have a fag. Ambled into Milton Road, and started talking with a steward. The young lad disappeared for a few minutes and came back and let me in to a spare seat usually used by the stewards.

It was everything I expected and for MLT to score when he did just sent me over the top. Even now I still get a lump in my throat just thinking about it.

Nothing has ever come close to that moment, although Cardiff came very close.

Sometimes there are just no explanations for "that" moment when it catches you out...I think next season may have a moment or two to savour with a lumpy moment.
