iansums Posted 21 May, 2010 Share Posted 21 May, 2010 As the concerns over Barry's fitness remain what do you think about James Milner in the centre midfield holding role? I've been massively impressed by him over recent seasons. He seems an intelligent player so I think would have the self-discipline to sit there and keep the shape. I think he could be a revelation there.
Scummer Posted 21 May, 2010 Share Posted 21 May, 2010 I have no idea what James Milner does. He seems such a 'nothing' player, doesn't stand out at all.
Hatch Posted 21 May, 2010 Share Posted 21 May, 2010 Wouldn't Gerrard become more central and Milner play in the left.

Replace Milner with Schneiderlin and you have exactly what people have said to me in the past.

We must have someone disciplined enough to sit in the holding role. I know it's not Milner's natural position but I think he is one of those players who is prepared to do a job for the team wherever he is asked to play. iansums Posted 21 May, 2010 Author Share Posted 21 May, 2010 Capello seems to have managed to get Gerrard and Lampard playing together. Agreed, but not in CM. Gerrard has been playing on the left with license to drift inside to link up with Rooney, similar to AL for us. I have always been a great believer in having a holding midfielder and I think we have done so well under Capello because Barry has fulfilled that role so well. saint_stevo Posted 21 May, 2010 Share Posted 21 May, 2010 (edited) Are we not past playing people out of position in national sides? The only exception would be in Glenn Johnson gets injured, and the oppostion winger has some pace, i would play Milner at RB ahead of Carragher...... If Barry isn't fit i would fill the role with Scott Parker or Tom Huddlestone, 1 of whom should be in the 23 IMO Edited 21 May, 2010 by saint_stevo

If Barry isn't fit i would fill the role with Scott Parker, who IMO should be in the 23 I tend to agree but we have been hit badly in this area with both Barry and Hargreaves out injured. Remember Milner has been playing CM all season since Barry left Villa so it would only be a matter of asking him to drop back a bit deeper. Smirking_Saint Posted 21 May, 2010 Share Posted 21 May, 2010 Would rather that Gerrard played off Rooney as a sort of shadow striker TBH, and in games where you need a big man play crouch and sit Gerrard to the left. yeah i would imagine that Milner could hold more but you would need Lampard to play more intelligently and be a more complete midfielder than just an attacking one. I think Lampard has done that in recent times under Capello. He got a lot of praise after the Croatia away game for playing a more reserved role. I think intelligence is the correct word. Gerrard is not the brightest spark which is why he could never be relied upon alongside Lampard. On another point, people often say you need 5 or 6 world class players in your team if you want to win the World Cup. How about: Ferdinand Terry Cole Lampard Gerrard Rooney The only question is, can they all stay fit?
