Drew Surman coming back??

1) It's the Mail ffs!

2) Never sure whether it's good to go back this close in the career

3) If he's available I'm sure there are Championship clubs that will jump at the chance of signing him.

That all being said I think that he's a class player who has red & white blood running through his veins but I refer you to point 1)

I'm sure he'd reject the majority of championship clubs to re-sign for us. Infact i'm certain of it.

He was at Wembley with his family as fans, so this club will always be close to his heart.

Don't misunderstand me - I'd love to be wrong & see him back...I just think that with the Mail's record, the cash that he's on, the other clubs etc there are too many reasons why it won't happen.

All Andrew Surman did with Saints was learn how to survive, or draw/lose a match, in football. I have no objection to the player himself, as he'd be a welcome addition, qualtity wise. It's just that he would have to join the winning attitude, which might not be as comfortable as the old Saints club he left.

TBH, that's my only objection. If he can overcome that, then welcome back Drew. He'll probably end up at Leicester anyway. That would be a good berth for him.

I know it is a long time a go, but he was in a winning side in 2006/07. ;) :)

I'm sure it wouldn't take him too long to settle back in and the confidence the other players currently have will soon filter through to him.

So many people are odd.

He is clearly better than League One, and even if people think not, then he would certainly be good enough for League One, and better than most of the other 'talent' we'll see in league one next season. He is still young and will no doubt improve too.

We might well have an ideal midfield 4 currently of Morgan, Hammond, Puncheon and Lallana, but are we going to play each one of those 4 in every single game? Even if Drew was 5th choice, he could play in 3 out of 4 of those positions, and so possibly end up playing 25/30 games during a season, what with injuries, suspensions, form, international games (!) etc. So hardly a player we don't need because we have a settled 4 (not that it is settled just yet anyway).

Plus those who say about looking back and not wanting him, he is a Saints fan through and through, and only left because he had no choice. The amount of people who harp on about loyalty, and I'm sure he would offer it to us, if the club potentially meet his expectations - which lets face it, we all hope it does! i.e. Premier League :)

Anyway, its the Mail, so probably a load of rubbish.

I'd take him back

he can play on the left or in the middle - in either a 3 man or 4 man midfield. He can also cover at left back

he's also a great passer of the ball - and with Lallana, Schneiderlin and Lambert would take our passing up a level

he's a Saint and would definately playfor the shirt

he's a level above League 1 that's for sure

One of the key strengths about our club is the family atmosphere. Drew will always be a member of the extended Saints family. I have a lot of time for him because he was especially nice to my son at the 2007 open day before the season started.

But I reckon him returning is a step backwards for the team. No spite, no maliciousness, I just see him as a figure from a past we'd all like to forget.

This, added to the fact that he has had effectively a season out of football, the boy will be gunning to make a name for himself again, he will have fire and graft. Added to the fact that he is saints through and through !

We have been crying out for a decent CM, and now one is presented(ish) people are saying it is a step back ?? No, no its not.

IMO he is arguably a better footballer than Hammond, and will hopefully have renewed drive and ambition.

The mental issue will be long gone, he will fit back in quickly, the losing mentality is a locker room thing, and once quelled (as it is) the players will lift any doubts he has.

Why ?? He is a good passer of the ball, versatile and always put the effort in. He always looked good for me, even last year when the whole team went backwards he still looked better than the rest.

He would be a first 11 player IMO. And as you say, he is a saint.

Has Weston checked in yet? He knows the family so would prob know if there is any chance?

I was just thinking exactly that. I can see it being a season-long loan with a view to perm because we'd probably pay Wolves more if we secured promotion to CCC and it might suit Drew as well as he'd probably not want to play in L1 for more than a season. Drew always had ability and an eye for goal but lack of upper body strength always was a drawback but he may have developed at Wolves. He's still youngish and would be a standout player at this level so yes from me. Still not sure where we'd actually play him in the first XI though, in the centre of midfield him and Hammond would be too slow and perhaps with Morgan too lightweight.

The way i see it Surman tried to do us a favour. We were in admin and didn't looklike the takeover was going to happen. We got some money for him and that must have kept us going a bit longer.

So i would be delighted to see Drew back here. He could deffinatly do a job for us. You don't become a bad player over night, he just needs to feel wanted and i'm sure would fit well into our current style.

As mentioned above though Surman is a fine example of why jumping to the PL from the FL is not always a good thing. In the past 12 months players like Lallana have progressed in talent due to playing week in and week out. Surman has not played much at all.

Yes, I ballsed my post up on the other thread, but he was sold to keep the club going after Lowe dropped us into administration.

I feel that line up would be ok as long as the team they faced did not want a fight. Too lightweight which is why we lost some matches that we should not have done. Drew does not add muscle to the team. We need muscle for the days when we have to roll up our sleeves and scrap.

only managed to play 47 games for us last season.

Which is a relatively big total for a 19/20 year old

sorry, my point exactly, Alpine appeared to be criticising Schneiderlin again implying he is often out. Think Alpine is wrong about Schneiderlin.

morgan is clearly one of the best players in our team/league 1..

after this season (assuming he carrys on) he will be deemed (if not already) too good for this division.

he is clearly too good for this division, and at his age only improving, a player who could easily match the owner's ambition for the club if we can hang onto him until premiership

Schneiderlin is also the only non domestic based player in the current French Under 21 squad despite playing in the 3rd tier of English football. He must be doing something right! :D

In my opinion Lallana and Schneiderlin are Saints two real quality players and are destined for a top flight European team at some point, either with or without Saints.

These are the U20s to be exact, the Espoirs (U23s) have gone off to Argentina for a couple of matches against the Argentine U23s .

I am really looking forward to tonight's game, hope that Morgan starts and shows the difference between a player who's getting regular first team competitive football and 19/20 year olds who are hanging about on the edge of bigger clubs.

Another one to watch Marvin Esor who'll probably play RB for the French,

chose to go and play in Ligue 2 with Arles-Avignon instead of hanging around in Bordeaux's reserves. Saw him when AA played Clermont a while back, looked like one hell of a player on that occasion.

We can afford better players.

We can attract better players.

Why go for Surman?

He is a current Premiership player, proven at Championship level. Something only Fonte and in the past Jaidi, Connolly and Davis can say of those currently in the squad. Saints are a League One club and Surman would walk into our squad and starting line-up.
