the saint in winchester Posted 17 May, 2010 Share Posted 17 May, 2010 I've been going for 40 years. My dad used to take me to The Dell in the 1960s to watch Ron Davies, Terry Paine et al. I had to stand on an upturned milk crate to see over the retaining wall. These days I can see over the wall (joke) and sit with my own teenage son at St Mary's. It's passed from generation to generation. It's one thing to watch sanitised prem football in TV, it's another to see it live at the ground. yorkie Posted 17 May, 2010 Share Posted 17 May, 2010 This is a very strange thread to be contributing on however I feel an urge to add my reasons. I've been going for 43-years man and boy - and I still get as excited now as I did then. For me it's all about the belonging - the SFC family! Games at The Dell & SMS, plus the grounds I have visited all have special memories that will live with me forever. In the good old days it ws about the "being one of the lads" - then it changes into enjoying the day out whatever the result and meet friends. It's a massive social thing for me and a chance for me to relax from work.
Seaford Saint Posted 17 May, 2010 Share Posted 17 May, 2010 I have been going off and on for 45 years. I take my son and we have a great day out.... I didn't go for a good few years, call out, shift work, working away, university got in the way. My son and I have great memories
Saint_Mabes Posted 17 May, 2010 Share Posted 17 May, 2010 I am sure NC has more pressing matters to deal with than reducing the queues for the gutty ****s who cant go 90 minutes without drinking or filling their face with burgers and pies. So having a half time pint is so important to you that your would miss 1/9th of the game, plus injury time, just to have a beer. How many goals have you missed this season going downstairs with 35 mins on the clock? No you moron. If you look at my post I am saying that it is out of order that you (or rather not YOU) should have to wait that long and subsequently miss 10 mins of the game. Between the three of us who have season tickets we usually take it in turns to go down 5 minutes early to get the beers in, and even then the queue's are to the back wall. So to answer your rather aggressive question, YES I do consider a half time beer with my mates important enough to miss 5 mins and the odd goal. And if you look at the majority of the posts on this thread it would suggest so do a lot of other people. And by the way, considering NC is a business man, i'd imagine that he would consider reducing the queue's and therefore earning a lot more money to be quite a pressing issue. And your laughable assumption that all football fans that buy a pint or any food are 'gutty ****s' makes me wonder whether you used to be an obese alcoholic who now has a slight complex about socialising around beverages!?? West End Saint Posted 17 May, 2010 Share Posted 17 May, 2010 I just love going to football always have hope I always will, I go with my Dad Brother Nephew and a few mates love a day out with the boys watching the mighty Saints.
The Cat Posted 17 May, 2010 Share Posted 17 May, 2010 I've missed between 5 and 10 goals while getting a beer and a balti pie this season. People in my row moan at me for making them get up but then I'm putting more money into the club every game than them. Really, the club love the fans who buy food and drink at half time as it's more profit. Loads of people leave on 85 minutes, they've probably missed more goals than me. I go to football because that's just what I always have done from a young age. Been to loads of non-Saints games too, at all levels. There's just something about watching a live game that appeals immensely to me.

lambertsrightleg Posted 17 May, 2010 Share Posted 17 May, 2010 the hairs on the back of my neck stand up before kick off and if these feelings ever disappeared i'd stop going. i love football but hate watching other teams. Even in Australia, watching another team isnt the same because I don't feel the same passion

LA77 Posted 18 May, 2010 Share Posted 18 May, 2010 I agree with Turkish. There's loads of time before and after the game to eat pies/burgers and drink beer so I don't see the point in missing the match. People can do what they like though to be fair. miserableoldgit Posted 18 May, 2010 Share Posted 18 May, 2010 I go to games because saints is my local team. I don't care about winning or losing just go to get f**king wasted and shout abuse at the away fans. There are cheaper ways of doing that __________________
LA77 Posted 18 May, 2010 Share Posted 18 May, 2010 Why do people think that getting drunk is so big and clever? \it's usually the ones that drink Fosters (LOL) from a can and brag about "getting c**ted". Just have a few beers and get on with it ffs, but don't expect others to think you're cool.
StuRomseySaint Posted 18 May, 2010 Share Posted 18 May, 2010 Personally the only improvements i would like to see are to the playing staff. How many goals have you missed this season going downstairs with 35 mins on the clock? I go down on 36 minutes, not 35 and I have missed loads of goals, I reckon I miss around 25 goals for or against during the course of the season due to beer drinking. I even managed to miss 2 of Saints goals at Wembley due to my love of all things alcoholic. :-)

irishsaint83 Posted 18 May, 2010 Share Posted 18 May, 2010 why do i go to games........... I have nothing better to do on saturday than to take a 2 hour bus journey at 4am in order to make a 7:30am flight to Bristol so that I can make the 9:23am train to southampton, so that i can go to the john lewis cafe and get a fry at around 11:15am before heading to the King Arthur so that I can watch the early kick off over a couple of pints before heading around to st marys so that I can take a large gulp to finish off my half time pint at around 4pm to celebrate the fact that its been a full 12 hours since i started my journey to have that gulp before making my way back up the steps to block 31, to try and find row bb and take my seat where my ass has been plonked for 16 games this season before heading back around to the King Arthur after full time before heading round to the hotel before getting a nights sleep before heading to to get the train back to Bristol Sunday to make my flight in order to get a 2 hour bus journey so that i can get home in time for a good nights sleep before i have to get up for work on monday morning..... thats why i go to games..... LA77 Posted 18 May, 2010 Share Posted 18 May, 2010 Why do people criticize what other people do. Get over it. If I go down at 35 mins when the bar opens then so be it. I don't moan at the people who stay to watch the game. Also I don't miss a goal because there are TV's down there and you still celebrate but by throwing beer about. If you read post 61 I have said people can do what they like. I was not moaning at all. And I wasn't just on about football fans that brag about "getting wasted", I was on about it in general. I don't know why people brag about getting drunk, and not sure who they're trying to impress.

It does indeed... but it tastes alot better if you have at least 6 pints in the pub before you arrive at the stadium.

Which negates the whole point of having one? At least you can stuff your face with your pie if, presumably, you hadn't thrown that all over the concourse as well. And the reason is there is a TV downstairs you can watch the game on? Why bother going at all, just sit at home and watch Jeff Snelling and throw your beer and food all over your own living room.

Turkish Posted 19 May, 2010 Author Share Posted 19 May, 2010 it's a drug I can't give up Funny you should say that, i read a story about a Man City fan a few years ago that was addicted to football, not joking, he was even banned at one point but kept on going despite this even though he got ejected every week from the game. His defence was that he was addicted to it, like a drug, I guess if people can make out to their wives they are addicted to sex when they cant stop ****ging fit birds then why cant you claim to be addicted to football? Liquidshokk Posted 19 May, 2010 Share Posted 19 May, 2010 (edited) Why do people criticize what other people do. Get over it. If I go down at 35 mins when the bar opens then so be it. I don't moan at the people who stay to watch the game. Also I don't miss a goal because there are TV's down there and you still celebrate but by throwing beer about. I went to the toilets at around 60 minutes into the game against southend which is the first time I’ve ever left my seat during the 90 minutes and was really surprised just how many people were loitering around in the concourse... not buying beer, going to the toilets, just loitering around.... felt very odd. felt like making people aware that there was a game going on in case they didn’t know I go to games because I thrive on the atmosphere, the surrealness of it all and the drama as I'm all for extremities in life.... Oh and because a few years ago I felt compelled to support my local team, as if I'm going to watch/enjoy football then i realised it had to be whilst supporting my local team. I'm just lucky that happens to be Southampton and not pimply ;-) I cannot for the life of me understand why you would want to support someone else’s football team. All that said my reasons for going cause me a dilemma with ST. I love the surrealness/action/drama of sitting around the dugout but my god isn't it dead around there! So I don’t get the atmosphere so much! :-S Edited 19 May, 2010 by Liquidshokk
