I hate the tabloids

I reckon this sort of thing, and bribing of World Cup refs has been going on for years, and Blatter knows it.

It would explain why we have been on the receiving end of some awful decisions over the years, because we play fair. Not like those dirty foreigners.

If that's what the World Cup is about we're better off out of it.

Tabloids are hardly newspapers in the true sense. They prey on prejudice and report celebrity and gossip. That's why I can't understand why they are exempt VAT.

When it comes to Triesman they seem to have reported an actual piece of news. That is what they should be doing. The person who should carry all the responsibility is Triesman, and his supporters, not the papers. Only in war is it acceptable for papers to be censured, and self censorship should be limited. The risk for us possibly landing the World Cup can't be a good enough reason to withhold the truth.

So, are you advocating err.... no transparency? Or, as is better known, lies and cover ups?

This is why I don't quite understand the fawning, pitiful reaction this morning by the FA, the grovelling apologies to the totally corrupt Blatter and his cronies followed by the immediate resignation of Triesmann, all in fear of the bid being rejected.

Pathetic.

What if his accusations are spot on?

Exactly right. But then you have a whole host of crooked b*stards on the FIFA committe, such as Blatter and the odious Jack Warner.

I'd rather Triesman had stayed, and had the argument in the open with the bent Spanish, Russian associations and FIFA. So what if it costs us the World Cup - we shouldn't be trying to win a bent contest by appeasement.

The allegations need airing, I'm 100% with you.

Football is in a right mess throughout the world.

It's no longer the game which Finney, Matthews, Puskas, Pele or a myriad of boyhood heroes bequeathed us. This needs sorting. It's not just the Skates. Football is now a vehicle for any ne'er do well with a get rich quick scheme in mind.

You can bet that a Russian newspaper wouldn't have reported one of their officials if the tables were turned.

Our tabloids just love failure and bad news. They'd rather England crashed at burned in the first round in South Africa than say a semi-final exit.

Most big Russian newspapers would print whatever the Kremlin wanted them to

Yep, rotten to the core unfortunately.

First you have to ask what Lord Triesman is doing talking to this young lady about such matters rather than alert FIFA. I suspect he has no evidence and it was just an opinion to impress her.

What was she doing taking a tape recorder to such meeting? What was her motive? Who put her up to this?

That said, Lord Triesman has been very indiscreet and should no longer serve as Chairman of FA let alone the bidding committee from which he has resigned. He is now soiled goods. Unless he steps down or is pushed from football administration at the FA we will not gain the support we need to hold the 2018 World Cup.

It is easy to blame the media but it is Lord Triesman who needs to take 100% of the blame

A fair comment TBH. The young lady must have known he would be ripe for recording!

Do you think his comments are unfounded and was just expressing his fear in an odd way?

Unless he produces proof to FIFA they have to be unfounded. At least Spain/Russia will not be able to try anything now if there was some truth to the story

I thought all the Tories on here loved the Mail?

You have to ask what is their motive? do they want England to get the world cup? has this story been on hold until the election news as finished.

Apart from money i don't know what the womens motive is? i wouldn't like to be her friemd if she is going to record her friends private conversations.

Its a classic set-up and sting operation, and I would be pretty sure the lady in question was motivated purely by cold hard cash. Unless of course she was unhappy at the prospect of her partner spending the summer of 2018 glued to the box;)

It is entrapment, nothing else. We all say things behind closed doors that we would rather remain private. It makes me sick that the Mail published this, they must really hate their own country.

Having said that Triesman has been a complete arse and has rightly quit.

She claims on her blog that they were having an affair, but also says it was her that wanted to end it, as she was unhappy about 'dating' a married man

Obviously a conniving, callous, cow, and typical of the modern "let's sh@g somebody so I can "kiss and tell"' mentality the tabloids have created.

What I don't understand is why all the reporting has focussed on Triesman and the England bid when surely the far bigger story, of much more interest, is whether or not Spain and Russia are indeed engaged in, or are attempting to engage in, collusion involving referee bribing.

Well why would they seek to influence referees in a tournament in which they are not participating?

The alleged deal was that Spain would withdraw their 2018 WC hosting bid in exchange for Russia helping them bribe referees at the Russia 2018 WC.

It's that c*** Max Clifford who is the girl's agent who no doubt put her up to this and paid her handsomely for it. If him and Murdoch and Murdoch kopped a bullet tomorrow, the morons in this nation may be forced to read actual news.

Good on Gary Linekar for boycotting the MoS.
