Preston North End facing wind up.

"The board of the club face a challenging economic climate and is disappointed that HMRC have taken this action in respect of a debt which is around 20 days overdue.

"We will be looking at our options to solve the issue next week."

I run my own small business and the thought of not paying my tax bill or being late with it never even crosses my mind. In fact quite the opposite.

I am getting a little ****ed off that these football clubs seems to think that they can tell the tax man to wait a bit while they sort their other problems out. Basically they have run the club badly and over spent in the attempt either to get promoted or to be competitive in the league, and think that the tax man is not the most important person to pay. Why do football clubs think that normal business practice is not applicable to them? I am sure that it has something to do with the football creditors rule, and to be honest the sooner that is scrapped the better.

Disappointed that HMRC has taken this action - well they are either very, very naive or very, very stupid but most likely both.

Looking at options to solve it - easy. Pay your bloody tax bill.

At this rate we may be promoted to CCC before the end of the World Cup.

and possibly Cardiff, so that may be 3. I think Cardiff are really banking on promotion or bust, so we should know in a week's time. So that is 3 clubs at in CCC who seem to think that they don't have to pay the taxman, while I slog my guts out and get raped by him.

Some might consider that HMRC have been a little heavy handed in this particular case. From the information in that article it would appear that they are only 20 days in arrears for one months tax return. Nowhere near the scale of the PFC debt owed.

However, when all is said and done, it you draw a line in the sand, I think you'll find that the taxman (annoying though it may be) is on the right side and the clubs are in the wrong.

If they are seriously considering winding up PNE over one months arrears - they should have put a match to PFC many many months ago IMO.

i don't see why the HMRC shouldn't come down on non payment hard. The staff won't wait so why should we (taxpayer).

Perhaps we should learn a couple of things from Norway. Tax is paid into an escrow account when the wages are paid so the tax man is always going to get paid. If you miss a payment for say VAT, they are on the doorstep a few days later to repossess and if you go bust as a company the shareholders are liable for government debt.

Guess what...everyone makes sure the tax man is paid up in full on time.

Jimmy Hill has a lot to answer for.

You know Dune, you're much older than I thought. You're correct, as VFTT points out, but £20 maximum per game was pretty lousy. Most players got a lot less.

The average weekly wage, for everyone else, was £11, I believe. ;)

EDIT: Great shame about PNE. Of course, this is another result of the SKY promoted Premiership being around. The sooner the divisions become 1 - 4 again, with a fairer distribution of cash, the better.

Que?

It was Jimmy Hill that fought to get the wage cap lifted way back when.

That may have been the foot in the door and in the ensuing years us fans were never really ITK about much that went on in the boardrooms until the internet. I'd be more inclined to see SKY as the root cause in that they opened the door for the inauguration of the PL and the Greed Train.

Yes, we fans lapped it up at first but now we know a little more and can see how wrong it all is.

I might read as smug here, but I don't intend to. I've been banging the anti-SKY Football drum since the idea was first mooted. Amongst the first threads I ever started on a Saints forum was called The Death of Football, and that was back in the old Red Saints Forever / Keith Legg days. Part of it was about smaller football clubs inevitably going out of business because they couldn't compete. The last thing I'll ever do is get SKY.

I remember the first SKY match at the Dell when they had the SKY dancing girls. Was against Man Ure and we lost 1-0 in the last couple of minutes. It poured with rain all game.

I do have SKY. I use the Broadband and the family use the rest of the package, although I do watch the odd match when a game holds interest for me.

I do see the problems caused, in retrospect, but what way out is there? It really needs football to get it's house in order because the fans (who have SKY) are probably not going to act collectively!

Can football do that? SKY have already divided and conquered, with the PL, and only this last month we have seen the FL buckle under the threat of a breakaway PL2!

We also have Sky. I did suggest to Mr TF that, now that his PFC were out of the Premier League, we could cancel.

He pointed out we'd miss a lot of cricket :(

I can't recall that we ever watch anything else on Sky.

Am I the only one who feels trapped?

Edit

I've just realised - this sounds like a letter to a 'Dear Marje' page :D

Marje says....

Can I suggest to the both of you, that you watch less and do more..?

Ditch your SKY, and BTF can go off to do some lake Dinghy Sailing to get that fitness back up, and ESB can go off and buy the beer that bears his name, whilst saving £30 odd a month to prop up those hobbies. :D

Cheers.

ESB says he'll spend more than the money he saves, on beer at the pub.

ESB will also have the wrath of the family on his back

ESB will also not be able to come on here and upset our fascist fiends.

All things considered, and with due respect

ESB says effoff Marje :D;)

I've been watching a few submarine/wartime films of late, and the first thing that popped into my head, as a reply, was...

Infractions away..! :D

Don't worry, you're safe. ;)

EDIT: That's sad about the museum. If anyone should take it on, it should be Notts County.

That would be a great suggestion, once we know that County (and Meadow Lane) are safe themselves.

Notts County are pretty much 'sorted' now.

Ex Lincoln City owner, Ray Trew, bought them for £1, discovered their full debts were in the 6ish million region and has done a lot of belt tightening and contract tearing up.

Kasper Schmeichel was on a 15 grand a week five-year contract - courtesy of Sven.

I pay taxes, you pay taxes, and that is the money who pays for our troops in Afghanistan, schools, police etc. etc. Why football clubs think they should have some different tax arrangements is an offence to our troops as well as to you and me. It's strange to feel that I'm on the side of the HMRC.
