Echo says withdrawn due to an advertising dispute. They have a copy of the programme and say there was nothing wrong with Pardew's comments in there.

Stu was also right about Liebherr's travel arrangements.

I can't believe there isn't one person in SWF land who hadn't seen or got a copy and can't repeat here what might have caused the need for a recall. If we have agents on the ground who know when we're about to buy an oil rig surely we have someone on this case...?

Steve Grant said he'd seen the programme, on this very thread.

Why would the footballing manager (Pardew) order a recall due to an advertising dispute? Wouldn't that be the job of head of marketting or such like?

And if markus's absence is so inoccuous a reason, why not mention it briefly in the post match os report?

That doesnt tie up with solent saying the recall was requested by Pardew. Surely Pardew wouldnt get involved in an Advertising dispute! I think Solent source is slightly more credible then the Echo but we will have to wait and see I guess.

Programme notes via the Echo:

The manager says he has "plenty of sympathy for the players and my staff who are not getting the rewards their efforts have merited".

He goes on to praise Puncheon and Fonte before saving his biggest tribute for Lambert. Davis is described as "the best captain I have ever had" and Lallana has the "potential to join Lambert among this club's future greats."

Nicola Cortese and the backroom staff are praised for their efforts in ensuring over 40,000 fans got to Wembley.

Pardew closes by saying the players will be back in 4 weeks time for a mini pre season training spell.

Maybe, just maybe IF the AP withdrawl of programmes lead is correct, maybe he had second thoughts about singleing out just a few players for special mention ?

Personally I think the advertising problem is more likely.

Radio Solent:

Withdrawn at the request of Alan Pardew.

Obvious really, AP believed the rumours he was to be "released" so placed a "Job Wanted" advert in programme.

NC told him he was actually staying so to avoid embarrassment programme was withdrawn.

How can them not arriving from the printers be the 'most likely' explanation if it appears some were sold early doors?

A question I raised earlier, but as yet no one has been able to answer. Were programmes available on subscription this season? If so they should have been despatched in advance of Saturday and some people might have received them before they were pulled from general sale.If none received by subscribers then it supports the fact that 'printing' issues were responsible perhaps?

Personally I find it unlikely that the columns by AP, KD etc are not proof read/scrutinised by a press officer or similar at SFC,if not actually written by the press officer with only a couple of guidance notes from the name on the column.

Because it doesn't merit a mention on the post match report? Unless Markus was pencilled in to play up front...

Yes they were, and no doubt some people do have them - we had this discussion leaving the ground, I think a mate's mate (I know, I know...) got a copy - but as we also discussed, as only about 1/3 even buy programmes at the ground, how small is the proportion of people who actually get the thing sent to their homes beforehand going to be ? At most 100 people I'd say.

Steve said (in the pub on Sat night) there was nothing at all wrong with the quality of the programme, so it's not that. He also said to me (and on this thread) that there's nothing particularly unusual about the manager's comments or anything else in there too.

As it's the only thing they've suggested and isn't true, I also doubt Solent's word on pretty much anything now, based on the little I do know (and have shared) on the programme front.

Well someone needs to post all of it up somewhere and I shall pass my only day off for this week in finding the 12 deliberate mistakes and circling them with my colouring pencils.

Ap asked for it to be withdrawn?

Well perhaps he made some positive comments and said some nice things about people and then found out they weren't as nice as he thought?

e.g Praise Lallana to be told before the game he was leaving

e.g. thanks NC for his support having been told he's on his bike

e.g he made an ommission in his list of people he thaked that caused him to think they would be upset.

e.g. None of the above

I can't see Pardew having any say in the matter.

I can't see it being withdrawn "because of a sponsorship issue", as it would create shedloads more sponsorship issues from people who've paid for adverts having to be refunded, etc.

We KNOW the paper quality isn't the issue.

It doesn't look like there's anything obviously problematic in the text either.

So it remains a bit of a mystery. Someone needs to get the staples out of it and whack a pdf online for a little while, I think, at least to let people speculate from a semi-informed position.

Didn't Saintsweb have some kind of Sponsorship Player Profile thing in there this week too ? That thing's cursed, I tells ya.

That's a good point actually (not Saintsweb sponsorship individually but sponsorship and advertising as a whole). The programme is made up of probably 25% advertising space, therefore withdrawing it means it must have cost the club not only the £3 per magazine income, but a refund and maybe compensation on the advertising space sold.

I generally don't buy a programme but usually do first and last game of the season but forgot on Saturday (probably because I didn't see a seller) and didn't know anything about programmegate until I got back to the car and they were discussing it on Solent. I would have been very p!ssed off though if my child was the mascot, therefore the prized souvenir of the programme with the kid's name in it, (which would normally be signed by some, if not all of the players) would not have been available. Likewise if it coincided with the child's birthday and they had missed out of being mentioned on the Junior Saints page.

On the signs saying that there were no programmes Saturday there was a note to say that if you had an issue to email the supporters charter address. Has anyone tried that? Maybe it would be a way of getting some sort of explanation.

If I had a copy I don't think I'd be taking it to pieces, might be worth a few quid in the future.

The odd copy will probably appear on eBay any day now as 'extremely rare Saints programme for serious collectors' c/o some nob working at the printers - and probably with an asking price of around the £50 mark...

Pretty sure all the serious collectors will already have had theirs through the post ! What it should say is "extremely rare Saints programme for nosey barstewards who have to know what all the fuss is about".

I'd like to apologise for my halfwit brother's information which although right in spirit, ie. withdrawn because of a production issue, wrong in fact (ie. not down to how it was produced, but the content). When I spoke to him on Saturday he said as much but I'd hit the 3 post limit so I couldn't correct. So sorry for the curveball.

Trust me though when I say that my uncle knows Messi and he's definitely signing :)

Whatever the eventual reasons are for the decision not to sell programmes this game will always be remembered for this. Such a strange thing to happen, made even stranger by the fact there is nothing obviously wrong with the programme that stands out.

And does anyone know when the club will be announcing ticket details for next year?

Posted (edited)

 at this nonsense.

Has a significant managerial announcement ever been made in a matchday programme at a football club? Ever?

Clearly there was some sort of error. It might be one that is not readily apparent to the casual reader. Something to do with an advert, a typo, whatever. Clearly the error was not realised until a few copies had been sold. It must have been something reasonably significant to get them to pull the issue but was it anything to do with footballing operations... doubt it.

Ta, but what was wrong with the content? Printers technical effup or decision by club to withdraw due to editorial issues?

Yup - I have submitted an enquiry using the the email Webform on the OS and am supposedly guaranteed an answer within 7 days.

7 days......Wow - thats one heck of a long time in the life of Southampton FC - ask Pards! :-)

There is definitely something strange going on.

No season ticket news, missing out on valuable advertising opportunity at the match.

No kit details - again missing opportunity to market it to an easily accessable audience.

No programmes for the last game of the season - in the 25 years i've been going to saints games i've never know programmes not to be sold, i know for a fact they were printed, so there is something in the content which was not deemed fit for publication

....and no sign of the JPT which most of us expected to see being shown off after the game. Maybe its been pawned already to buy that Brighton RB :-)

Believe it or not, my lad was one of the mascots and yes it is very disappointing but nothing can be done unless I can find someone with a copy who is willing to sell. I was told that if they become available then one will be sent. As an aside the Saints in the Community staff were fantastic.

You don't have a scanner in the loft per chance?

Surely .com has a camera he can take pics of each of the pages? Go on, you know you want to :) Doesn't even need to be a DSLR (which I, incidentally, bought one of the other day :) )

Maybe your comment re Flybe is right......They paid their money up and were not getting their full return in the programme as required by the contract and Saints had to withdraw for the legal reasoning...
