Not living in southampton not sure where is good. Looking for somewhere thats about £15 for a main course but caters for veggies too. Has anyone got any suggestions please? The Kraken Posted 4 May, 2010 Share Posted 4 May, 2010 Three restaurants that I've been to recently and would recommend; I'm sure you can google them to find menus etc.... Zen: Japanese, below bar. La Regata: Spanish, opposite Town Quay. Thai Cafe: Thai, Oxford Street.
SOTONS EAST SIDE Posted 4 May, 2010 Share Posted 4 May, 2010 You could try NV in below bar St as they do a meal+beer/wine £9 Here's the link.http://www.nvsouthampton.com/ Or any of the many chinese eateries or the tai one behind the HSBC also in below bar St.
Wes Tender Posted 4 May, 2010 Share Posted 4 May, 2010 Why not try something from the variety of restaurants here http://www.oxfordstreetsouthampton.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=15&Itemid=20 It's not too far from the ground and there are several possibilities. The Olive Tree does vegetarian, also probably some choice at Kuti's which is good Indian Food. Also the White Star has two Rosettes (according to their website) for food and might well have vegetarian choices.

My mate owns the White Star but apparently they dont sell big macs, only contemporary english/french cuisine, and apparently the prices reflect this! marc_saint Posted 4 May, 2010 Share Posted 4 May, 2010 I had a meal at "Ask" down at Leisureworld the evening after the Charlton game. It was very nice food with really good service. Fonte and Antonio even turned up with their other halves for a meal but was turned away cause it was full so best to book if you decide to go here. A lot of people aren't keen on chains, but I must say I had a very good meal in there. Not sure about the veggie options, but I'm sure the menu's on the internet somewhere! South City Si Posted 4 May, 2010 Share Posted 4 May, 2010 Recommend: Coco Rio Bouzy Rouge Others: NV is nice, but for similar price and bettr food see above, but if you like a bit of entertainment of such as tribute acts, etc on Saturday if that's your thing. Rancho, nice bit of steak, but add on sides etc it doesn't up cheap!

I seem to recall that was you on the second post. He wanted a main for about £15, which is what you could pay at the White Star. I haven't been there myself, but two rosettes should mean pretty good food. And there are many other dining choices in Oxford Street too.

Guest Dark Sotonic Mills Posted 5 May, 2010 Share Posted 5 May, 2010 The Coriander Lounge, opposite(ish) The Standing Order on Below Bar. The two partners are Kuti's ex manager for 20 years and Kuti's ex-chef for 15 years. Fabulous food; somer of the best I have ever eaten.

Probably more people have a leather or rubber fetish to be honest, but you've got to admire the management for catering for the tastes of S&M bondage types on such a special night I expect all the desserts came with a side order of crushed nuts and whipped cream
Shroppie Posted 5 May, 2010 Share Posted 5 May, 2010 There are two Thai options on Portswood Road. Sara's Thai is cosy, entertaining and not too expensive. Mango Thai has been recommended and gets high Tripadvisor ratings - sort of Thai tapas bar which could be fun. Going to try it for the first time on Saturday after Southend. The two partners are Kuti's ex manager for 20 years and Kuti's ex-chef for 15 years. Fabulous food; somer of the best I have ever eaten. I was going to suggest this. It will probably be busy but it's the best Indian restaurant I've eaten in in Southampton but is only slightly more expensive than your average swimming-in-grease curry house. Someone else suggested Pilgrim House which is a Chinese order-as-much-as-you-like-affair and is pretty good quality. Again though, booking usually required for a Saturday night. Golden Balls Posted 5 May, 2010 Share Posted 5 May, 2010 Recommend: Coco Rio Bouzy Rouge Haven't been to the Bouzy Rouge in years! Fantastic food. I thought it had been sold though? Best bet it just to wonder down Oxford Street. Loads of nice places, guaranteed to find something everyone likes. Not far from the ground either. SoccerMom Posted 6 May, 2010 Share Posted 6 May, 2010 White Star is excellent. Have only been there for lunch, but it was very good and worth its rosettes. My husband tells me there is bizarre antique porn in the men's loos which he found very amusing, but I can't confirm this. Mango in Portswood Road - very good, excellent veggie options, but BOOK!!! Sara's Thai is more traditional than Mango. The food is extremely good, but the tables are extremely close together, so not the most comfortable or private dining experience. Around the corner is Ceno's - contemporary Anglo food. Very healthy size portions, nice atmosphere, good wines but can get a bit boomy and loud for conversations. These last three you might consider if you park your car somewhere in Portswood. About 30-40 mins amble down to St Mary's. Drawback is that it's up hill all the way back, not so good if it's raining. Zen, not so much. The tempura was quite disgusting and oily, and they have a weird thing with the way you order sushi, where you seem to have to eat a whole lot of rice based sushi before you can eat anything else. Won't be going there again. My son really rates Piccolo Mondo (google it for address). His girlfriend is veggie, and eats really well there. He says it's unpretentious, well-prepared and delicious Italian food, sensibly priced.
dronskisaint Posted 6 May, 2010 Share Posted 6 May, 2010 Is Saras Thai the one by the traffic lights opposite The Mitre? If so the guy who runs it (married to the Thai) is a skate & that put me right off my food..that said I haven't been for three years so it may have changed hands. Jez Posted 6 May, 2010 Share Posted 6 May, 2010 White Star is excellent. Have only been there for lunch, but it was very good and worth its rosettes. My husband tells me there is bizarre antique porn in the men's loos which he found very amusing, but I can't confirm this. Leisure Suit Larry-esque cartoon drawings of men and women aboard an old liner ship in all kinds of comedy sexual positions and exploits. Very amusing, though distracting when trying to aim. As for food, just go to Oxford Street generally, can't go wrong with most places down there, and plenty of choice too.
stevegrant Posted 6 May, 2010 Share Posted 6 May, 2010 Buon Gusto (Italian restaurant at the top of Commercial Road, by the Mayflower) re-opened a few months back under new owners. I went there last week, and can highly recommend it.

That's the one, and that sounds about right. Met him once or twice and there was something not quite pukka about him. Thanks for clearing that up. Mango is better, anyway...
