Either learn Dutch or speak English man. If you live in another country for a long period of time you'll eventually start talking similar to what you hear around you. I saw a friend of mine recently who has spent 10 years in the states and claims he doesn't talk with an American accent, right after asking for 'corrrfee'

JackFrost Posted 3 May, 2010 Share Posted 3 May, 2010 After 9 months? What an idiot Perfectly plausible. Bet that was the first time a lot of people here had heard him being interviewed since losing the England job
Saint_clark Posted 3 May, 2010 Share Posted 3 May, 2010 Actually really annoys me that video. OK so let's say for arguments sake that he picked up their accent after only 6 weeks there - what the f*ck happened to his grammar?
JackFrost Posted 3 May, 2010 Share Posted 3 May, 2010 Actually really annoys me that video. OK so let's say for arguments sake that he picked up their accent after only 6 weeks there - what the f*ck happened to his grammar? Like I say if you spend months - even weeks speaking to no one except blokes trying to speak english to you with a strong dutch accent, your accent and vocabulary can become similar to theirs unconsciously if that is all you are surrounded by the majority of the time. It depends on the individual of course, but there are people who (e.g. talk with a southern accent) speak to a Welsh person on the phone and start talking with a Welsh accent themselves, completely oblivious to the fact they are doing it. Anyway fair play to McLaren, was always going to fail in the England job but has done a brilliant job with FC Twente
St Landrew Posted 3 May, 2010 Share Posted 3 May, 2010 After 9 months? What an idiot Some people are unconcious mimics. Their personalities are not that strong, and so they gather the mannerisms and customs of those around them, in order to fit in. Acquirring a foreign accent and manner of speech, is one obvious sign of this happening. Even over a short time like 9 months, although he's been manager of FC Twente since 2008 [i looked it up], so it's a bit longer.

"Mashive Underdogsh" "We are, what you say, underdogs".... Yes Steve, that's right, the Dutch coined the term underdogs specifically for clown English managers to use the phrase when in Holland... What a tit.

Redondo Saint Posted 3 May, 2010 Share Posted 3 May, 2010 That's so funny!!! Gold Member lives! I've been in USA for nearly 10 years and have not lost my accent at all - other than maybe a slight change for some words. The same for most of my mates who have been over here for much longer. However, there are some Brits who deliberately change accents when the plane doors open! Very strange.

Baj Posted 3 May, 2010 Share Posted 3 May, 2010 My brother has lived in Germany for 17 years. Not only has he still got a completely clean English accent, despite speaking fluent german for about 15 or those 17 years, he still speaks his GERMAN with a completely clean english accent too.
