SO16_Saint Posted 29 April, 2010 Posted 29 April, 2010 has anyone got a holiday booked to Greece anytime soon? Im due to go on honeymoon there in 7 weeks and was wondering whether there would be any chance of it getting cancelled, ala ash cloud?
CB Saint Posted 29 April, 2010 Posted 29 April, 2010 Im off to Santorini at the end of May. I'm not too worried about the situation. Compare it to the banking crisis in the UK. Trouble at the top but the rest of the economy continued to opreate.
Jez Posted 29 April, 2010 Posted 29 April, 2010 Im off to Santorini in Mid August. I'm not too worried about the situation. Compare it to the banking crisis in the UK. Trouble at the top but the rest of the economy continued to opreate.
buctootim Posted 29 April, 2010 Posted 29 April, 2010 Im not off to Santorini in Mid May or August. I'm not at all worried about the situation.

The Greek government were borrowing from commercial banks but they have taken fright so the Eurozone governments will step in and lend the money instead. It will have zero impact on your honeymoon, apart from maybe making the pound a bit stronger against the euro, so you pay less for meals and drinks. Have a good one.
Draino76 Posted 29 April, 2010 Posted 29 April, 2010 The Greek government spent and borrowed to much; just like Bigot Brown has done, and wants to continue doing.
solentstars Posted 29 April, 2010 Posted 29 April, 2010 The Greek government spent and borrowed to much; just like Bigot Brown has done, and wants to continue doing. no the greek economy fiddled its figures to get into the euro but it should never been allowed to enter the euro has it is a weak economy,i believe it has a black economy of 20 % and tax avoidance is rife. browns borrowing like all major economies was to bail out the banks to stop the world having another 1930.s depression. i don,t like the man but if cameron was in power he would have done exactingly the same. i think you will find the usa has a massive debt level as well.
Draino76 Posted 29 April, 2010 Posted 29 April, 2010 The 'Greek economy ' fiddled its figures'? You mean the Greek government? The Greek government borrowed and spent the money; the Greek government can't pay it back.
Lord Duckhunter Posted 29 April, 2010 Posted 29 April, 2010 I'm going to Kos in Aug. Bit worried about the wave of strikes the news seem to be reporting, will they affect airports?
Thedelldays Posted 29 April, 2010 Posted 29 April, 2010 maybe we should follow the sandal wearers ideas and throw ourselves into the Euro

It's widely accepted that the previous Greek government had hidden the state of the economy and that this Greek government have been left to pick up the pieces.

Lord Duckhunter Posted 29 April, 2010 Posted 29 April, 2010 It's widely accepted that the previous Greek government had hidden the state of the economy and that this Greek government have been left to pick up the pieces. What!!!! they had a Greek Gordon Brown.
View From The Top Posted 29 April, 2010 Posted 29 April, 2010 What!!!! they had a Greek Gordon Brown. Somewhat murkier than that IIRC. Something along the lines that the actual economy was 20% small than the figures being used and that the deficit was some 50% larger. I've no idea if it was a left, centre or right wing party in power.
solentstars Posted 29 April, 2010 Posted 29 April, 2010 What!!!! they had a Greek Gordon Brown. yes he was a consertive:D
SO16_Saint Posted 29 April, 2010 Author Posted 29 April, 2010 so the general consensus is that it (the holiday) will be fine but the greek economy is screwed. good good
Bobbyboy Posted 29 April, 2010 Posted 29 April, 2010 I heard that Andy Android is due to be appointed administrator for the Greek government. After all, they're already in Europe.
SO16_Saint Posted 5 May, 2010 Author Posted 5 May, 2010 Just been on BBC that there are no flights landing or taking off from Greece because of mass strikes.... !
trousers Posted 5 May, 2010 Posted 5 May, 2010 Too risky to go on holiday involving a flight this summer (Greek unrest + volcano) hence I've just booked a holiday in the UK in August. Bring on the wasps and rain!
