The Official Summer Transfers and HCDAJFU Thread

Me! I was thinking that last week and' date=' with three days to go, I'm now pretty sure we'll wait and see how we go for the first couple of games before dipping into the market again.[/quote']

yep - not far off the mark there.

we made all of our signings (bar harding) after the start of the season last year. Ok..most of that was due to the fact that we had very little pre-season time, but i am of the belief that the market is very slow at the moment and usually picks up mid-august.

I find it hard to believe that Pardew has had over a month and a half to identify a Rickie double and at least 1 central midfield player that he wants to sign, and won't sign them before the season kicks off!

The transfer window does run until the end of August, but I would imagine we would have at least 1 new player before the Plymouth game kicks off on Saturday! Although Barnard was very impressive against Reading on Saturday!

Orr was one of my shouts ages back. Totally forgot about him.

I am hoping in these next few days we sign someone. Without doubt, vitally in centre midfield. It is scary silent but we have ambition & want to go straight up this season & not strengthening 2 key areas would be more than foolish.

Defence is sound. Midfield. A winger or makeshift attacker &, of course, back up to Rickie & we have strength & depth. At the moment, we are desperately short of ball winners in midfield & the opposition will know this. Games can be won & lost down to who controls the middle of the park. Only having Wotton & Pulis as back up is totally unacceptable to a team of our ambition. Pick the right player & it will galvanise our entire squad.

Having watched AP's interview on SaintsTV player, I have to say I interpret his words on transfers as meaning there will not be any more signings...i.e. his words were roughly "I don't want to harm myself or the club by discussing transfers". Or perhaps that meant "I cannot discuss this as I might reveal my disatisfaction at not being backed with further investment in players even though we're short due to injuries"? He even mentions losing his job at West Ham because an injury to a key player affected results. I might be wrong, but I am starting to believe we'll not see anymore signings for some little while.

By the same token, I also think the injuries to Lambert, Spiderman, Lambert and possibly Lallana also, are somewhat fabricated to keep them safe and away from scouting clubs etc., so perhaps it's not all doom and gloom eh?

Completely agree with this.

I hope we're wrong, but I tend to agree. I feel like there's something not quite right and that those expecting more signings will be disappointed. Very happy if I'm proved wrong though.

Interesting that we've gone from a position a week ago, when Pardew was saying he wanted 1 or 2 more (maybe even 3), before the start of the season but it would be touch and go whether they happened before the big kick off to his rather vague comment this week. I can see only 2 reasons: 1) we're close to signing these players and AP doesn't want to jeopardise the deals or 2) he's been told that there won't be any more signings and to rein in his comments. I hope it's the former.

I think in the main, he spent his budget in January, they did release a big kitty for him to use for the likes of Punch, Fonte, Seaborne, Barnard - bids for Stock/Danns/Ward etc.

We'll probably get in a couple of loans, but i have a hunch that the players were interested in either cost too much in fee or wages and Nicola is not budging on it.

Yes, I too think that NC is determined to keep reign on the finances and that some of the players discussed have not fitted in with those arrangements. We cannot complain about this - the whole game needs to be better regulated in terms of salaries, so NC is doing a good job to keep a lid on it. It's a concern for the season ahead, however I still think we've got a squad that can do the business this season providing fitness is not a concern. For me though, we really need to get another decent central midfielder as an absolute minimum.

NC isnt going to spend so much on the other stuff- u21 coaching, training ground, marketing people etc without also supporting the manager in the transfer market. We are just waiting to get the best player for the best price! We will swoop at some stage! Lots of top teams havent entered the market yet!

Our first team is very good, it is our back up that is somewhat lacking. Injuries will happen, we all know it, and without a decent back-up we don't have strength in depth. Unfortunately, enticing players to the club knowing they'll be back ups will prove very difficult, we really relying on loans, or maybe someone on a free that hasn't been snapped up yet that fancies coming along for the ride.

As for CM, it really does look weak, I get the feeling AP rates Wotton as a back up which is worrying, but I'm not forgetting that Butterfield has, and can, play in that position. When Richardson comes back from injury, it really does give us another option in that CM role, though, of course, a specialist ball winner in that spot rather than a utility player would make things that little bit more comfortable.

See the BBC rumour page is reporting that Mohamed Sissoko is having a trial with Kilmarnock according to the Daily Record. Surprised he's dropped that far down, could he be that potential ball winning midfielder for us?

Not the ex Liverpool and Juventus player surely? Must be someone else with the same name...

I really don't know why people are pressing the panic button??

ok we've lost a few squad/back-up players (bar Antonio and Waigo who were both on-loan and we were uncertain if they would stay anyway) but we haven't lost and have added 3 decent full-backs to the squad.

I don't get why fans, not just of Saints but of every team, seem to want them to go out and buy the best player on the first day of the transfer window? Good things come to those who wait!

I'm sure AP has his targets and is busy negotiating deals for them, I still expect us to fill i nthe missing gaps in our squad by August 31st.

Was just thinking that. Also Troy Deeney has handed in a transfer request at Walsall. Pacy' date=' good goal record at this level. Could be worth a punt although Watford have been mentioned as being interested in him.[/quote']

Watford have had 5 bids rejected for him. I guess him handing in a transfer request is his way of getting the move pushed through.

Perhaps we are after a Watford player but they want a replacement first.

If you as a manager got a good bid for a star player, would you try get two guys in first to cover it quickly and cheaper!

We desperately need someone with power and pace as for me that is what we are lacking. That plan B when we are struggling to break teams down which happened quite often last season. On many occasions the introduction of either Waigo or Antonio gave us that different option which we just dont have at the moment.

I am sure we will see 1 or 2 new players before the end of August but it would of just been nice to to have them here now and hit the ground running from day 1 as we do have a pretty tough start.

'Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has confirmed he has received no loan approaches for Wales international Sam Vokes.'

From the SkySports transfer clockwatch. Would be pefect back up to Rickie and went on loan to Leeds last year so is willing to drop down to League One + the benefit of him being a Saints fan. Surely he is the best option available.

Agree! He would be a super option for backup! Saints Fan aswell means he should give 100% every time he plays.

Rumour round-up:

My mate reckons we could be getting Andros Townsnd on loan...

Lifted from a 606 thread.

SOUTHAMPTON

Alan Pardew has made a last gasp attempt to sign Michail Antonio from Reading. The offer is believed to be around £500,000 plus several clauses.

Saints are also facing a race against time as they try and tie down a deal for Matthew Phillips before Saturday. The player would have to be registered to Saints by Noon Friday to be able to play against Plymouth on Saturday. Southampton and Wycombe are in "advanced talks"

Pardew is hoping to sign Andros Townsend and Emmanuel Frimpong on loan. However whether they will happen I'm not sure.I certainly haven't heard anything offical.

Ryan Tafazoli and Arran Racine are in talks with Sutton United over a loan deal from Southampton.

Taken from Football Rumours.

Andros Townsend - wasn't he at MK Dons last year?

Saints are also bound to release details of any signing between 9.30 and 10.00 tonight, when the website is down, so the website immediately crashes when its brought back online, when a sudden rush of forum users log back in having been denied their fix for half an hour...

Edit: the little yellow message I had telling me the forum would be down has disappeared now, so this might not be true! Spooky.

My first post on here, hello all...

If the rumours are true, Andros Townsend would be great. He was quality when we played Leyton Orient away. It's clear we need one more quality centre mid, a wide player and a quick striker - then for me the squad is perfect.

Fantasy transfers (excluding the obvious Kaka, Ronaldo and a 19-yr-old Pele) are three from: Matt Phillips, Neil Danns, Matty Oakley, Nathan Tyson (not gonna happen but we can hope), Andros Townsend, Tom Eaves, Charlie Austin.

I'm sure Pards knows what he's doing anyway. See you at SMS on Saturday, let the journey to the Championship begin!

Come on guys Kandol is not good enough. I thought the criteria was a physical striker to replace Lambert if he was injured.

If this is the case young Eaves of Oldham is the man. Then i would sign Antonio who could play right mid and striker and then all we need is a centre midfield. BTW is Mullins still at that lot down the road???

Yes i do Appy. I have seen him play numerous times and i don't think he would add anything to the team im sorry. The guy could barely get a game at Leeds and his attitude and temprament are questionable and probably not worth the gamble.

As well as playing attributes, you have to consider other intagibles like personality, motivation etc.

I just think there are better options available

My ideal end to the window would be

Dawson (Rochdale) centre half

Hayden Mullins (Pompey) Centre Mid

Antonio (Reading) Right Mid

Eaves (Oldham) Centre Forward
