Great signing that. If he regains his form it will be
Saint Garrett Posted 21 July, 2010 Posted 21 July, 2010 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luke_Varney Think he'd be a good addition to the squad.
ohwhenthesaints Posted 21 July, 2010 Posted 21 July, 2010 We better buy Davis a pair of stilts for the Huddersfield game so that Garner can't lob him for a third time.
Chez Posted 21 July, 2010 Posted 21 July, 2010 Why? ... he played in midfield for Palace. for some reason I thought he was a centre back. That explains the Seaborne signing then!
Chez Posted 21 July, 2010 Posted 21 July, 2010 What about Pittman ?? I know he isn't that great but he has the Lambert mould and a cheapish fee and some SFC nurturing he could be good ?? several people on here suggest he is pretty average to say the least. Not seen him myself.
Surman4no7shirt Posted 21 July, 2010 Posted 21 July, 2010 http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11700_6272455,00.html Trio track Wycombe trialist, apparently we are tracking Marvin McCoy

doughnutman Posted 21 July, 2010 Posted 21 July, 2010 The Marvin McCoy rumour would perhaps suggest that we are looking to use Butterfield in the middle at times?
Smirking_Saint Posted 21 July, 2010 Posted 21 July, 2010 several people on here suggest he is pretty average to say the least. Not seen him myself. Nor have i really, i have read on here he isn't all that but then i read reports that he is pretty good so i don't know, i have seen highlights of him and he looks good, takes his goals well and combines with some screamers. Plus he is a 6 foot + lump.
S-Clarke Posted 21 July, 2010 Posted 21 July, 2010 http://www.examiner.co.uk/huddersfield-town-fc/huddersfield-town-news/2010/07/21/nottingham-forest-striker-joe-garner-joins-huddersfield-town-86081-26901560/ Huddersfield have signed Joe Garner on loan. Great signing that. Good signing, they're pretty serious about going up this year. It's going to be competitive which makes it more interesting....but i still think we have the advantage of ''continuity''. Also...we'll probably be the only club in a position to buy in January and teams that are active in the january window often have very good 2nd halves of the season. Wednesday/Hudders etc could be maxing out their budget already, just like we did in our playoff season in 2006.
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 21 July, 2010 Posted 21 July, 2010 Rumour on 606 that we're in talks with Darius Henderson. Expect it's bull**** though.
RonManager Posted 21 July, 2010 Posted 21 July, 2010 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luke_Varney http://www.sheffwed.vitalfootball.co.uk/article.asp?a=205621
MarkSFC Posted 21 July, 2010 Posted 21 July, 2010 Varney and Henderson don't have great scoring records....we can do better, and hopefully will!
SuperSAINT Posted 21 July, 2010 Posted 21 July, 2010 Varney and Henderson don't have great scoring records....we can do better, and hopefully will! Darius Henderson used to beat the living sh*t out of us when he played for Watford. He'd do a job for us if we signed him.
MarkSFC Posted 21 July, 2010 Posted 21 July, 2010 Darius Henderson used to beat the living sh*t out of us when he played for Watford. He'd do a job for us if we signed him. In the CCC when we were crap?!! Suppose he could do a job. Still hope for better!
sfc4prem Posted 21 July, 2010 Posted 21 July, 2010 In the CCC when we were crap?!! Suppose he could do a job. Still hope for better! The thing is, we won't get much better coming in to sit on the bench in Lambert's shadow. You can't expect us to sign a quality Lambert-esque player, because they simply wouldn't want to play second fiddle to Rickie.
Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 21 July, 2010 Posted 21 July, 2010 The thing is, we won't get much better coming in to sit on the bench in Lambert's shadow. You can't expect us to sign a quality Lambert-esque player, because they simply wouldn't want to play second fiddle to Rickie. I agree. I think we need to look at players like Varney who will be itching for a chance somewhere, to get away from where they're not getting a chance now, or an up and coming young Prem targetman on loan. Surely Man U have someone who fits the bill? Plymouth took a chance on Ebanks-Blake and he did alright for them and Wolves.
Norm Posted 21 July, 2010 Posted 21 July, 2010 Dunno, i don't know who Essruu is, but unless he is a tallish dark haired 50ish year old with a beard i doubt it. Yep, that's Essruu to a tee!
MarkSFC Posted 21 July, 2010 Posted 21 July, 2010 The thing is, we won't get much better coming in to sit on the bench in Lambert's shadow. You can't expect us to sign a quality Lambert-esque player, because they simply wouldn't want to play second fiddle to Rickie. I agree in essence, Im sure no-one "wants" to sit on the bench, but think someone llike Austin would be able to "do a job" in Lamberts absence alongside Barnard or Connolly, and would also put pressure on all of them to perform. What if, Lambert AND Barnard or Connolly get injured at the same time, would you fancy Henderson and Barnard/Connoly to be good enough for 10-15 games? I think Austin wont be as prolific this year (second season syndrome) BUT is definitely one who could go along way. He wont with Swindon and who will he learn off there?
Johnny Shearer Posted 21 July, 2010 Posted 21 July, 2010 (edited) Demarcus Beasley. A free agent I believe and someone who hasnt lived up to expectations. However think a NPC team would get him or he's go back to the states - unless he's signed for someone already!? Edited 21 July, 2010 by Johnny Shearer
Smirking_Saint Posted 21 July, 2010 Posted 21 July, 2010 Varney and Henderson don't have great scoring records....we can do better, and hopefully will! Pards isn't looking for someone to take the goalscoring reigns off of Lambert IMO, just someone that will fill in his position of leading the line. That said, i would love another big boy in there applying pressure, but as what has been said previously many times, Lambert style players (creative, big, strong and goalscoring) are hard to come by and won't sit behind Lambert happily.
Johnny Shearer Posted 21 July, 2010 Posted 21 July, 2010 (edited) sure Demarcus Beasley went back to the states Know his contract expired at the end of June - didnt know if he had signed with anyone. Wages would be pretty high though i'd imagine and L1 is too much of a step down! Edited 21 July, 2010 by Johnny Shearer rubbish spelling and missing words
Saint Garrett Posted 21 July, 2010 Posted 21 July, 2010 Beasley's just like De Pedro on this board...have we haven't we signed him...he was meant to be the next big thing!

I think Austin wont be as prolific this year (second season syndrome) BUT is definitely one who could go along way. He wont with Swindon and who will he learn off there? Well it's all about opinions but I don't see Austin as being able to play the Lambert type role. I actually would take henderson over Austin every time. I don't think Austin is that good and in any case we're not linked with him. They're both pretty unrealistic targets though.
Smirking_Saint Posted 21 July, 2010 Posted 21 July, 2010 Anyone heard any more about Harlee Dean ?? I heard he was a decent young prospect and he has turned down a contract at the daggers, I looked on the daggers forum and they seem to think he is a decent prospect, only 18 to.
Chopper71 Posted 21 July, 2010 Posted 21 July, 2010 Luke Varney - bet then it is on betfair so probably not happening....
Saint_lambden Posted 21 July, 2010 Posted 21 July, 2010 Luke Varney - bet then it is on betfair so probably not happening.... I swear Betfair just get it off football-rumours.co.uk because every bit of info in that Varney piece: http://www.betfairfootball.com/league-one/southampton/southampton-linked-with-yet-another-striker/ Has been on the footie rumours site in the past few days.
saint_stevo Posted 21 July, 2010 Posted 21 July, 2010 I heard varney off a mate, and saw summit bout it on his wiki......
MerceSaint28 Posted 22 July, 2010 Posted 22 July, 2010 Seriously guys, i think we could do better than Varney. A championship reject, who has lost his way. I think Aaron McClean of Peterborough should be the man. Strong, fast and aggressive. Otherwise Austin would be great, but i doubt Swindon will sell. If Pards is just going for a straight replacement for Rickie, someone like Adebola or Agymang would fit the bill
Rebel Posted 22 July, 2010 Posted 22 July, 2010 Aaron McClean would be a good signing for us - strengthens us and weakens a promotion rival with one stroke of the pen!

MerceSaint28 Posted 22 July, 2010 Posted 22 July, 2010 Sorry Dell days, why would he play second fiddle??? McClean was a championship player who is very well respected and is not a target man. There is easily room to say he would be first choice up alongside Rickie. I think you are also missing the point. We don't know whether we want a replacement for Rickie in which case anyone who comes in will be a reserve or a speed merchant who has the chance to play alongise Ricky. Pards has to decide, so we wait to see..... I must say though i am still very worried about centre midfield. I think as we are in such a fortunate position financially it makes no sense keeping a player like Wotton on the books. Clearly he is not good enough and we are at least one short in centre even with him. I would be looking for an experienced quality player to push Morgan and Hammond and then an exciting young player to learn from the others. I just don't see the point in keeping the likes of Wotton and Pulis, hopefully Pulis is gone in August. However if this was the case why was he given a squad profile??
Thedelldays Posted 22 July, 2010 Posted 22 July, 2010 one thing...is 20-goal-a-season barnard not enough...?
Smirking_Saint Posted 22 July, 2010 Posted 22 July, 2010 Pardew has said before he is looking for a replacement for Rickie in case he gets injured, in that respect i believe that we are 'looking for a replacement for rickie, in case he gets injured' As far as Austin and Mclean are concerend i would f*cking love it if they signed for us, and may do ?? You never know, but i doubt it, i think we will see a big bruiser we can play off of as without Rickie our tactics are somewhat nullified.
sambosa75 Posted 22 July, 2010 Posted 22 July, 2010 Yes please to McLean! He's an animal at this level. His younger brother plays for our academy as well.
Smirking_Saint Posted 22 July, 2010 Posted 22 July, 2010 Yes please to McLean! He's an animal at this level. His younger brother plays for our academy as well. Does He ?? Cool
doughnutman Posted 22 July, 2010 Posted 22 July, 2010 Yes please to McLean! He's an animal at this level. His younger brother plays for our academy as well. Daryl Mclean? He used to but we released him at the end of the season, he was playing against us for Farnborough as he is training with them
Saint Garrett Posted 22 July, 2010 Posted 22 July, 2010 I don't think AP knows what his striker targets are, hence saying maybe back up for Rickie, but maybe a different kind of forward. He wants another, but clearly it'll depend on the best option available. But it's not a priority, we have 3 excellent strikers for this league to start the season with, so maybe we'll wait until the deadline, or loan one after. Wide midfielders and CM are no doubt more immediate concerns. I do like the idea of signing another good L1 striker though, really stop the chances of them scoring against us! McLean, Austin, Jackson, get them all! Jackson has signed for Norwich ?
Matthew Le God Posted 22 July, 2010 Posted 22 July, 2010 Yes please to McLean! He's an animal at this level. His younger brother plays for our academy as well. No he doesn't.
SaintRichmond Posted 22 July, 2010 Posted 22 July, 2010 one thing...is 20-goal-a-season barnard not enough...? As long as he can score 20 in AP's present set up .............Yes
Nidger Posted 22 July, 2010 Posted 22 July, 2010 Sorry Dell days, why would he play second fiddle??? McClean was a championship player who is very well respected and is not a target man. I just don't see the point in keeping the likes of Wotton and Pulis, hopefully Pulis is gone in August. However if this was the case why was he given a squad profile?? I 110% agree that we should get rid of Wotton! The guy doesn't know how to pass the ball forward, and when he does, he just dinks it straight down the middle of the pitch straight through to the opposition's goalkeeper! GET RID!!! Competition for places (especially in midfield is definately needed! Schneiderlin, Hammond, Lallana and Puncheon have no real competition for their places at the moment! Needless to say I was happy to see Pardew's comments: "I'm a little bit concerned about my wide areas, there's not really a lot of competition for the starters. I still think we need another option (in attack). What that option will be will depend on the market and what becomes available." 2 CMs and another wide player are needed IMO. And of course, another Rickie (he won't be easy to find)! In AP I trust!
benjii Posted 22 July, 2010 Posted 22 July, 2010 I can't believe people want us to just cast off Wotton. Very short sighted IMO. As a starter... no, obviously not. But if we're 1 goal up with a few minutes left he is the perfect guy to stick on and give the centre backs a bit of shielding from the hoofs upfield that will be heading our way. I doubt the midfielder we all aspire to sign would offer that attribute; we're really after someone with a bit more attacking instinct. Wotton should not be in the starting eleven but he has an important role to play as a senior squad member.
S-Clarke Posted 22 July, 2010 Posted 22 July, 2010 Huh...? Played for Sheffield Wednesday last season, but he's a player (wide man) that blows very hot and cold. He can look fantastic and score some brilliant goals one moment, and the next he looks a bit like a headless chicken. He has been on trial with Charlton, but they decided not to pursue it. Will be interesting to get a view from our resident owl...
