SuperMikey Posted 22 June, 2010 Share Posted 22 June, 2010 Well, AP is apparently friendly with the Gills chairman, I think they may be Pards local club to where he lives. Certainly Gills are talking down the Norwich interest and, who knows, something may have been arranged by us on the quiet. AP has long spoken glowingly of Jackson and if he has contacts at Gillingham we may find an announcement after 1st July. If so, strangely, I think Jacko will not be the first Canadian international we have signed in recent years... Nope, we had Jim Brennan (I think that was his name) at SMS for 6 months back in 2004. Right Back. Pretty crap.

I think Nope and Yep have the same effect in that instance, but you're right in saying that he was a left back. Not a great player, but did okay on a free on a 1 year contract! Think he was kept out of the team by a young Gareth Bale... Edited 22 June, 2010 by SuperMikey

A few people on the Saints forum of the time (can't remember which of the many incarnations it was) wanted him to stay - think he went over to America afterwards. SNSUN Posted 22 June, 2010 Share Posted 22 June, 2010 On the topic of players at the World Cup, I've been quite impressed with Daisuke Matsui who plays in Japan's midfield. He's 29, so not a young player, but has a great touch on the ball and good vision. He caught my eye playing against Cameroon. Reading a bit about him he plays his football in France for Grenoble who just got relegated. Realistically not one player in World Cup would come here, but we can dream - although whilst players like Danny S hi ttu are playing, there's always hope. Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 22 June, 2010 Share Posted 22 June, 2010 Agreed. SSN reporting Norwich have had a bid of 500k rejected. I thought Norwich were skint? I'm sure you don't get that much for reaching the Championship so how are they buying Surman and bidding for Jackson? Not surprised £500k was turned down; didn't Gillingham want £1.5m last season? Nidger Posted 22 June, 2010 Share Posted 22 June, 2010 Sounds like the Gills are doing their best to get a best price for Simeon Jackson by saying they are in no pressure to sell. Personally i think he is exactly what we need. If we sign 2 strikers, him and another like for like for Lambert, we would have 4 excellent options up front. I think we lack a bit of pace and Jackson would give us this and genuine goal threat. Connelly is injury prone, old and maybe too similar to Barnard so i would prefer to sign Jackson than keep him. Im sure a bid of around £500,000 would be enough for Jackson and whats more it would be an excellent addition, thoughts?? I agree with you completely! We have a severe lack of pace within our squad! Pace is a great asset, especially in away games where you can catch teams on the counter attack! The Chris Lines rumour sounds interesting! I thought there was talk of Holmes being involved in the deal too!

He's quite lethargic apparently, and what we really need is hard working, battling midfielders. Having said that, it's the whole David Batty vs Matt Le Tiss debate all over again! I won't write Lines off now, but I still think there are better options out there.

Saint Fan CaM Posted 22 June, 2010 Share Posted 22 June, 2010 Well I'm pretty glad he didn't join us to be fair. IMO if we're taking too many players from lower leagues we'll end up staying in this division longer than we anticipated. We need just to look to Fonte to see how the right acquisition at this level can make so much difference. We need the RB and CM equivelants of Fonte in short. saint1977 Posted 24 June, 2010 Share Posted 24 June, 2010 Not sure about that, Varney was on big wages when he was at Charlton and this is why I suspect he has been on loan from various different clubs. Given that they've off-loaded the likes of Schmichael I can't see it given that they only recently fended off admin. Trew has put money in but much of that will have been paying down debt. I think AP will have funds but the club like to be discreet. I think we'll see lots of activity in early July.

MerceSaint28 Posted 25 June, 2010 Share Posted 25 June, 2010 I see Norwich fans are getting quite excited that are going to be signing Simeon Jackson. Realistically as they are now a division ahead of us, they would have to be favorites even if we can offer more in wages. Slightly frustrated by the lack of rumours regarding signings. I was hoping we would get our business done early this summer as oppsed to the usual late rush. We have a lot of holes to fill, so lets hope Pards is working hard behind the scenes. The only player being mentioned is Lines, who is not the most exciting player in the world. We shall see.....

The only player being mentioned is Lines, who is not the most exciting player in the world. We shall see..... Anyone who feels unsettled that they've not heard substantiated rumour transfer news (and to be fair, with transfers and the current regime, that doesn't - thankfully - happen much or other clubs would nip in before us) needs to relax. Anyone who thinks that the transfer mill and our scouting network grinds to a halt while Pardew or Cortese is taking a well earned break need to also relax and think a little more. We have new employees who are also involved with procurement, both for junior and senior squad members, all of whom have been brought it to spread the workload and assist the club. Those that worry about timelines and the impending season need to also consider that we currently have a World Cup underway (easy scouting via BBC/ITV if not there), players on the annual break and full transfer window dealing largely being carried out from 1st July until the first month of the season.* * Just to calm those worry merchants, just cast your memory back to Pardew's signings so far and the manner in which the club dealt with these acquisitions. Fonte, Lambert, Harding, Hammond…I don't remember much in the way of rumour on here (other than some last second mentions when they were probably already spotted at the club) until they were actually announced. I think Puncheon may have been rumoured but, then again, we fortunately seem to keep it fairly air tight. Those that haven't, Elliot Ward springs to mind and rumours (whether true or not) about other players like Stock and Danns and Facebook pages soon amounted to nothing, if indeed any of the usual internet cr*p was of any relevance and truth. Cortese seems to like to keep his cards close to his chest and rightly so. It's the professional way to do business. I am 100% confident that Pardew has identified his targets to Nicola and they will resume the status and updates from their scouts and SFC Staff upon their return, if not already. Who is to know that some transfer rumours aren't leaked as disinformation (Calderon for example) while the more serious targets are tentatively inquired about. We shall find out soon enough. * I personally believe we will bring in one or 2 right backs (or a utility Thomas like centre half that can switch to RB considering Jaidi isn't getting any younger, one of which I see as a younger player to develop into the role for the future like Seaborne, but right sided. Maybe even the Eastleigh lad!), a ball winning midfielder and a box to box man. I'm still curious to see how/where he plays Dickson and we all know a striker is a key, key role to fill and this crucial signing will not be poor imho. I really think they'll be looking for a striker that can link with Barnard but, crucially, has the exact attributes to benefit directly off Lambert's ball winning/lay off capability. Much like that Niall Quinn/Kevin Phillips partnership. Connolly is ideal for this but fitness is a problem. A pacey, fox in the box type player will be, imho, top of the agenda. Purely supposition but it makes sense and ties in with previous Pardew comments. A wide right player is also missing having lost both Antonio and Papa (both pacey and both could slot in on the right as well as forward), I expect this area to be addressed. Puncheon is more suited to cutting in and central imho. Much like Lallana although both can clearly cut it playing wide. The World Cup isn't a bad time to review players from overseas also if they're able to adapt and we have pre season and it's the perfect time to acquire such players. Least they'll be match sharp.
