The Official Summer Transfers and HCDAJFU Thread

Saw Brian Howard in town today.

I know he's still contracted to Reading but HCDAJFU, f'sure.

As a Saints fan, I wonder if he'd be tempted if we put an offer in for him?

Reading fans say he can't hack it in the Championship anymore and his fitness is poor.

He's what we're looking for but im not so sure.

My reading supporting mate reckons he isn't that good, TBH i have not really seen much of him to form a consistent opinion.

He also said that Harper is carp, and thats why he was released to Sheff Utd, i suppose this is backed up by them releasing him when they had the year extension built into his contract if they wanted him ??

So i don't know about these two.

I mentioned Hooper ages ago, but a striker is not what we need right now.

That big fat Guy?

We can do better although good shout.

We probably could, but he scores goals, fat or not.

Also a big favourite at Northampton, or was.

Lets not forget another big fat goalscorer we bought this season ;)

And another in our past.

It isn't a very exciting prospect i know however i think he would sit on the bench for us and would provide a like for like (ish) cover for Rickie, as in a target. I just can't see many others that would come in to sit on the bench ?

Does that Crawley Town chap fit the "back up for Rickie" bill? Ademano? I remember there was talk of him in January. If hes a youngster that doesn't expect to get games, the odd appearance here and there may suit him, and us, if he has potential to bring him on. I don't know much about him, but may explain that rumoured interest.

Only this season Austin and Morison (and a leser extent Martin) have proved there are young players to be had from outside the league to add to a squad, and even a first team. To try and get someone in, and tell them "your going to be second fiddle to Rickie" will be tough.

Beattie won't come here, no matter how much we want him to. He won't want to play second fiddle to Lambert, and i'm not sure we'd have enough pace up front if we played the two together.

Eastwood's career has come off the rails a bit recently, but the potential is still there. Worth a go?

Also, what about Rob Earnshaw or Nathan Tyson from Forest?

They've slipped behind a bit in the pecking order as NF have about 30555 strikers but they're both very pacy and are great finishers.

Earnshaw would probably be on high wages though...

Eastwood and Tyson would both be good signings - they both have good track records in League 1 and scored lots of goals at this level. I'd think about getting them both in on loan. Eastwood as cover for Lambert and Tyson to replace Waigo.

Surely we could see off their interest and snatch him?? He wont want to be part of Aidy "Hoof It Long" Boothroyd's team will he?

Can we move on from Beattie please? :smt062

He will most likely move to a lower Premier League team (one of the promoted ones?) or a top 6 Championship team with money to pay his wages- he can still do a job at that level IMO.

Joe Garner (striker) has been in and out of the team at N'Forest- what about him? He would score goals at this level.

Why do people keep banging on about strikers ?? We have Lambert, Barnard and probably connelly. We could probably do with a striker that will cover Rickie but IMHO it would be a partnership of Rickie and Lee or back to the 4-5-1 formation that worked so well for us last year.

I just can't see us paying out for another proven striker (if you get my drift).

Money will be spent on a winger, CM and a new RB.

Anything else would be fantastic though.

Slipped down the pecking order? Sigh. Earnshaw is their first choice striker scoring 17 in 37 games this season. Tyson has also been selected when fit (not nearly enough) although they have played him out wide a fair bit. If they are going to offload anyone it will be Adebola, Garner or McGoldrick.

Yes correct, but i can't see us buying a proven striker if you catch my drift.

Both Antonio and Waigo COULD cover but where essentially wide men that could fill in, if we buy a striker, it will be a young gun that will sit on the bench or again a flexible winger.

Or else the money spent on Barnard would have been wasted.

Yes - if he's anything like he used to be, could be a very good free experienced signing at CB. Assuming Jaidi has one more season, Riggott has potentially five more seasons in him, a good replacement. However with Jaidi, Fonte, Seaborne and seemingly Martin at CB, do we need another CB?

He's not a Saints fan, he's a Rangers fan.

He always told me that if he had the chance to play for us again then he would, whether that's still the case I dont know I havent seen him for a few months now

S****horpe United's Gary Hooper looks a very good player

Would he drop down a league for our promotion push?

I'd take Grant McGann from S****horpe. A creative centre midfielder and finally someone who could deliver a half decent corner. Wouldn't be too expensive either.

I've just looked through page 1 again and I think we need six players in.

1 x Central defender

1 x Right back

1 x central mid

1 x Right/left mid

1 x striker

Then someone who is equally great in central midfield and at right back. Someone like Llloyd James but good.

I've mentioned Tyson in previous windows. He is very very quick and is left footed. Would provide a gret option on the left in matches when a different approach to Lallana's might be needed as well as pace up front. His game is a bit rough but he's basically, like you suggest, a left sided version of Waigo (but probably faster). As Chez has said though, he has been playing first team and probably won't come to League One.

Tyson would annoy the hell out of us. He really is one of those players who is either great or useless. He works best as an impact sub but I'm not too sure we're looking for people to sit on the bench.

I think you're right.

We have so many unknowledgeable fans who slate people like Waigo and Puncheon for giving the ball away occasionally that someone like Tyson would also come in for a bit of grief.

I don't know if his throw-ins are any good either and he can't take a corner which results in a goal 100% of the time.
