Thedelldays Posted 25 April, 2010 Share Posted 25 April, 2010 Rest them when you think you can win without them - that's what good managers do. And have them on the bench in case... That's not what Wenger does. but fergie does...and in cup games... and he is the best of the lot.. well, I will go with what you say, go hell for leather in the cups and rest the players in the league..after all, we need to win as many games as possibel regardless of what competition it is or if the players get burn out...going up next season is a lesser concern as playing your best players constantly
up and away Posted 25 April, 2010 Share Posted 25 April, 2010 In fact we should have more chance of doing it. I would argue that we have better players than Leicester did when they won the league. Hopefully we should have an even far better squad by the end of next season, which will be heavily added to if we go up to the CCC. It's going to be interesting to compare ourselves to Leicester, our resources will definitely be greater. What's going to be interesting is how we remove the current weaknesses we have from our team with the acquisitions we make for next season. Leicester had a big edge in having a defensive spine to their team, such they could grind out results when not playing at 100%, something we lack. I am pretty sure we will have a better squad than Leicester when we get to the CCC, it will be interesting to see the changes. Oakley has really impressed, average defensive midfielder, but his delivery from a dead ball is top notch.

doddisalegend Posted 25 April, 2010 Share Posted 25 April, 2010 I like cup competitions so I'd like us to compete in all competitions we're in. However rotating the squad is not a bad idea. Lets face it we won the JPT Final with a second string we should have a big enough squad to cope I think. I'd quite like to be the first team to retain the JPT (which is the one we are most likely to win really)

Rest players when you think you can win without them. Fergie DOES that, correct. Wenger just throws kids into competitions like the League Cup and they often get stuffed by people they shouldn't. I'm not sure what that does for the kids? It's like when Redknapp did it at Southend. What do you learn? What you already knew!!!! For me, you could say, right, we're playing Gillingham home on Tuesday but we're playing United in the cup on Saturday - so which game do you play Lambo in??? Given that we have Barnard, Waigo... I dont think lambert is good enough for us to beat man united to be fair..so will take the 3 points for certain thanks.. we can worry about man U when we get back to the prem...staying in league 1 for another season will be very negative IMO
Saint_clark Posted 25 April, 2010 Share Posted 25 April, 2010 As Delldays says, resting a player in a league game for a cup game we're not going to win is ludicrous. Besides, Lambert has played every single game this season and is still scoring, so no reason why he couldn't play both.
LA77 Posted 25 April, 2010 Share Posted 25 April, 2010 Why do so many people discuss hypothetical points? By the way, I think we'd beat united 2-1 (pulis 2 late goals)

paulwantsapint Posted 25 April, 2010 Share Posted 25 April, 2010 -We have got to win the league next season with strongest team -We should be able to retain the JPT as if we get home draws our fringe players should get us through the early stages - League & FA cups as above a saints XI should get through early stages then bring in more of 1st team to play against better teams Papa, Thomas & Antonio have all benefited from cups
krissyboy31 Posted 25 April, 2010 Share Posted 25 April, 2010 A very positive interview yesterday. AP was obviously disappointed that the play-offs have now gone but said he thought all the players he wanted to stay will be staying and they all wanted to have Champions on their respective CV's. He said he had never won a championship before as player or manager and that's what he intends to put right next season.
revolution saint Posted 25 April, 2010 Share Posted 25 April, 2010 Here's what I want for next season: I want us to win every game by a minimum of three clear goals I want us to play like the Brazil 1970 side. I want the leading goalscorer table to be made up entirely of Saints players. I want cheap season tickets I want to get served quickly at half time. I want Walkers Crisps to introduce a Southampton range. I want to thrash Pompey at Fratton in the FA Cup. I want us to unearth a youth player who is the best player in the world and who never ever wants to leave. I want kids in Manchester wearing Saints kits and being called glory hunters. I want all of these things and more but what I really, really want is for the bloke who sits two rows behind me who moans, groans and inexplicably yells out inane comments like "Two's and Three's" to realise that he has no footballing knowledge whatsoever and that it would be better for society if he had his jaw wired shut. revolution saint Posted 25 April, 2010 Share Posted 25 April, 2010 sod it...as well as winning the league lets also go for 100 goals and 100 points Stop aiming low FFS! There's 138 points up for grabs and we shouldn't be dropping any of them! 100 goals is only a ratio of just over two a game but I'd agree a goal difference of 100 would be acceptable. Saint Fan CaM Posted 25 April, 2010 Share Posted 25 April, 2010 Pardew's team is a lot better than Burley's team as can be seen from subsequent seasons Thought Burley was pretty realistic like Pardew is I totally agree with your other post above but we need to let fringe players become more involved The problem is that many of our fringe players are not good enough having been left over from the old losing mentality side. AP has made it quite clear that there will be a clean out this summer and new players coming in. It is his first real big opportunity to put the final touches to a side that will dominate league one and be very strong in the Championship. I for one cannot wait - this summer and next season is going to be awesome. The climb back to the Prem really is going to be SO enjoyable to behold - stability, continuity of manager, winning mentality in the team, goal scorers all across the team, proper new training facilities, a rejuvenated stadium, new better players to get used to etc etc. Bloody fantastic and I defy anyone not to be just a little excited about whats happening at our club!!! mikee Posted 25 April, 2010 Share Posted 25 April, 2010 I think I heard correctly...... Pardew didn't just say he wanted chanpionship players but to build a team in the close season capable of winning the Championship (not league one but the league above) as we didn't want to be in the championship for long at all to achieve the 5 year plan. If he can do that - and he said he that is what he would be asking Cortese for - then we really should be able to win this league next year as we will obviously be adding some serious quality over the summer. Good times ahead!

He said he wanted to build a championship squad now, so he could bed it in so we're ready when we're promoted. i'm very excited tbh.
