Italia 90 - Memories

This was a great World Cup I went over iniitially for the last two group games in Sardinia.

Stayed in Alghero (loads of other Sainys fans stayed there too) at the opposite end of the island to where the games were played and hence avoided the ristrictions on drinking they had at South of the island near matchdays.

After we got through to last 16 flew over with two mates to mainland to see the game against Belgium in Bologna (which we won with Platt's last minute overhead kick), spent night in big top then train to Genoa and ferry back to Sardinia.

After that back home to watch remainder in pubs over here.

Had a great time, but what I remember best is before we left for Sardinia after the Eire game there was little interest in World Cup in England, on our return everyone was talking about and loads of glory hunters were going over to Italy for the later stages of the competition and complaining about the lack of tickets where as for the group games they where easy to get hold of even on the day of the game.

My favourite world cup. Gutted as was much too young to travel over, sounds like a cracking trip.

A lot of my mates were ummm forced to go home early. Can't think why to be honest.

You obviously not Taitey then, he was one of the lads in Alghero, but then went onto Rimeni where he was in the wrong place at the wrong time and got deported

My favourite World Cup ( I was too young to remember 1966) !

My overriding memory was being in a Swiss hotel at the time of the semi-final - A lone Englishmen amongst Swiss, Swedes and German's.

Lineker's equaliser caused me to leap and yell in triumphant celebration, as you do of course at such times, and to suddenly realise that the Swiss and the Swedes were leaping and yelling in celebration alongside me.

The Germans however were not amused !

Pity about the end result though but great memories...

And a moment again to remember the greatness that was Sir Bobby!

I have great memories of Italia '90, except for the worst I've ever felt at the end of a football match when we lost the shoot-out to the Germans.

I was 16 at the time and got dragged to Tenerife with my parents for my last "family" holiday with them.

Flew out the day after we beat Egypt, and watched the Belgium, Cameroon and Germany games in a bar surrounded by bitter ex-pats who were cheering on whoever we were playing.

My dad and me have never been so close, bearing in mind that he barely got more than a grunt out of me in my teenage years;lots of high fives and manly hugs celebrating England goals!!

I also remember with fondness my sky blue Umbro third England shirt as sported by Barney in the New Order 'World in Motion' video; best England song ever by a long way.

Leaping up when Lineker scored the winner against Cameroon, smashing the lampshade with the back of my hand and showering my baby daughter with glass (as well as splitting the middle knuckle of my right hand, for which I still have the scar) I wasn't very popular with the missus, I can tell you.

I was there! At least in Sardinia and then the match against Belgium in Bologna. My leave then ran out (money not far behind) which was a shame. All the better for being able to speak Italian so had no problems, even when my ticket didn't turn up for the Ireland game. Went out and bought a ticket in the street and ended up in the Irish end, which of course was no problem, although the carabinieri were a bit surprised.

I collected the Italia 90 World cup folder. Each week there were different inserts for the teams, best world cup goals, old players and previous world cups.

Of course collecting the stickers to fill up the squads section was most enjoyable.

I also collected that, fantastic memories, was 9 years old at the time of the world cup and it is still my favourite ever, brilliant stuff.

those were the days we could stay up and watch the games, then watch the news in the morning to see the lads who were deported walking through arrivals with their t-shirts pulled over their faces.

this world cup will be unbelivably sh*t compared to Italia 90

Ah yes, the deported from Rimini. Many completely randomly and pulled away from their family beach holidays to fill up an already booked aircraft: the number of seats amazingly equalling the number of arrested.

I will always consider Colin Moynihan a complete sh^t.

Probably the last World Cup I got totally into. Not that later ones might not have been good but life gets in the way. I was 18 in 1990 and could watch every game and although I attempted the same in 94 without England in it it wasn't the same.

Watched the final in 90 in Majorca in a hotel dominated by Germans so naturally teamed up with some Irish lads and supported Argentina. Happy days.

I watched the '82 Spain v Northern Ireland (Gerry Armstrong winner) game in a Majorca hotel. That was an interesting night, to say the least! :D

World In Motion is still the greatest football song IMO andalways makes me think of that World Cup. Gascoignes tears, Platts winner against Belgium, Roger Milla and the corner flag, so many more too. I was just turning 11 at the time and can say in all honesty that our semi-final against Germany match was the moment that I truly fell in love with football instead of just being a fan.

My favourite World Cup without doubt, but probably because I was 16, had just left school, loved the 'Madchester' scene and also discovered various other leaisure activities which helped the mood of that fantastic summer

But journalists & FIFA Look back on it as a terrible World Cup, full of negative football and one of the reasons why the back pass law was introduced two years later. But **** it, I loved it.

Definitely one of the best for me, I was working as a barman during Italia 90 and was lucky enough to see all the England games and most of all the others during this particular World Cup. I was able to have a lot of quick swifty half pints out back too.:D

Never since Italia 90 have I been able to watch nearly every game of a World Cup, be at work and have many beers too all at the same time. :(

Itallia 90 brings back so many memories.......Caudio Cannigia (sp) on the first day against Cameroonn, and Roger Milla.

Btw, I agree with Suewhistle, Colin Moynihan was a complete txxxxx. He was always on the news slagging off the England fans for their 'unruly' behaviour, but a couple of years later, he ran on to a hockey pitch as soon as the game had finished to celebrate with the winning team. Apparentley, it was completely different to a football match so it wasn't the same.

Politicians eh! :smt083

Nessun Dorma stills sends a shiver down my spine. Platt's equaliser was quality. Mental team too - Gascoigne, Beardsley and Waddle - proper talent.

The World Cup that prompted me to follow England for the 1994 qualifying campaign - including trips to Turkey (mental) and Holland (double mental). Mental team too - Andy Sinton, Carlton Palmer and Geoff Thomas - proper ****e.

No Mark Wright on there, one of England's best in that tournament, playing as a sweeper. It would have added another former saint as well.

Shilton, Woods, Petrescu and Townsend were the only former saints I spotted

Italia 90 makes me think of Rijkaard spitting on Rudi Voller, Roger Milla taking the ball off Rene Higuita and scoring an easy goal and Gascoigne and Platt combining against Belgium.

Talk about missing the boat!

Mate and I decided to do Euro '88 in Germany and had a whale of a time... Dusseldorf, Stuttgart, Hamburg (Riepherbahn ((sp)) was a real eye-opener at that tender age) and once Engerland had lost the last of their 3 games we headed off to follow the Oirish in the semis (due mainly to a feeble attempt to re-acqauint ourselves with a certain young lady who we'd 'met' in our hotel after they tonked us, never did track her down ;-) ).

Ruud Gullit wigs all over the place and taking turns in shopping trolleys through city centres en-route home form numerous bierkellers. An amazing time for us both. Spoiled somewhat by the mass brawls in virtually every town center between English fans and any other nation who fancied pallying up with the local hitler youth, tbh I shat myself on more than one occasion.

The final between Holland and Russia was a real spectacle...apparently, I say apparently as we met a couple of American girls who were hitching aroung Europe and took them under our wings so to speak, all four of us ended up semi naked in a fountain until the local ecilops shooed us away, then joined the after match party in some weird beer tent village thingy.

Upshot of all this was that we both got hitched the following year and there was no way we trusted ourselves in Italy. Didn't realise what a genuinely decent team we had and perhaps should have gone. Should be noted that the squad in '88 was a team of World beaters on paper which also contributed to our conclusion that England would never produce the goods.

Deffo was one of the best times I have ever had ever.

NB

One night we ended up sleeping in some blokes greenhouse on his allotment and in the morning him and his missus (fraulein) brought us breakfast which included steak and a bottle of schnapps.

My friend is half German and without his fluent lingo skills I am convinced that I would have ended up in either a German cell or a german cemetary.

I always thought how great it was that Steve Bull from second division Wolverhampton Wanderers made the squad due to his prolific scoring record at Wolves.

Shame is today if Rickie Lambert was suddenly called up by Capello the media would shread Lambert and question Capello's sanity.

As the saying goes 'if you remember it you werent there'.

twas as you say Stuutgart, Dusseldorf and Frankfurt, though we also went to Hamburg though and another memorable moment was when Shilts got his record breaking appearnce, at full time we were the one voices singing 'Southampton southampton Southampton, and were captured on TV back home sitting heads in hands at the final whistle.

In '90 I got married the day we drew 0-0 with Holland and most of the blokes in the room slipped out to watch the match at the Golden Hinde in Twyford Road leaving me to dutifully dance the night away with mrs h. I knew at that moment that my football life would never be the same and iirc took a sabattical from it for the next 5 years or so. Bloody wimmin!

And a very young Kassey Keller playing for the USA.

I remember having a poo during the Germany match but getting back to the lounge just in time to see Lineker bang home the equalizer.

I was 8. I remember Platt's goal, Cameroon (including their "tackling"), Rene Higuita, Enzo Scifo, Georgi Hagi, Toto Schillachi, Lothar Matthaus, Gazza, Bobby Robson, shell suits, the San Siro, big hair, the UAE and of course, Nessun Dorma.

It was a great world cup to go to.

The last non plastic, non corporate, full on, non face painted hurrah.

Loved every single second of my time over there and it started my ongoing love affair with northern Italy, northern Italians and, especially, the food and wine!

Heh, heh, why do think I live here in northern Italy? Honest, I haven't had too much to drink tonight: last game of the season tomorrow afternoon....

There was a documentary on channel 4 soon after Italia 90 had finished. It had Kevin Allen (Keiths brother I think), following England with a few mates and staying in campsites with other England supporters from start to finish.
