Matthew Le God Posted 22 April, 2010 Posted 22 April, 2010 (edited) Saints groundsman Andy Gray (not the Sky pundit) has won League One groundsman of the year. I've beaten the OS to it! Saints have been in the top 3 pretty much every season for a number of years - whilst in the Premiership, Championship and now League One. http://www.football-league.co.uk/latestnews/20100422/groundsmen-of-the-year-announced_2245681_2031037 The St. Mary's pitch is one of the best in the country and puts a lot of big Premiership teams to shame. Like a bowling green throughout the whole season. Edited 22 April, 2010 by Matthew Le God
Saint_clark Posted 22 April, 2010 Posted 22 April, 2010 Staggering how well kept it is really. Even the goalmouths look brand new.
Appy Posted 22 April, 2010 Posted 22 April, 2010 Brilliant job from the team. Well deserved. The playing surface is staggering compared to other grounds in this league, only Norwich comes close to being anywhere near as good.
oxfordshire_saint Posted 22 April, 2010 Posted 22 April, 2010 Surprised Swindon didn't get a mention, their ground is a dive but the pitch always looks good.
The9 Posted 22 April, 2010 Posted 22 April, 2010 Fantastic surface and well deserved over a number of years, but was I the only one who noticed how wonky the grass-lines between Chapel and Northam were cut on Tuesday ? Usually they're well-defined edges, but these ones were meandering all over the place.

The9 Posted 22 April, 2010 Posted 22 April, 2010 He should do consultancy for Wemberly To tell them what ? "Your problem here is that you keep having to get rid of the pitch to stage non-footballing events and the light can't get in either? My rate is five grand an hour, by the way".
SuperMikey Posted 22 April, 2010 Posted 22 April, 2010 SMS pitch is always brilliant, top marks to the team. Maybe we could rent him out to other clubs like Exeter and Tranmere so we don't struggle on their sh!tty pitches next season?
wheels Posted 22 April, 2010 Posted 22 April, 2010 Before now, I've attributed it to all the **** that's played on it - this year that excuse won't work :smt040
Arizona Posted 22 April, 2010 Posted 22 April, 2010 Surprised he beat the Wycombe Groundsman, but congrats none the less.
saint lard Posted 22 April, 2010 Posted 22 April, 2010 (edited) Excellent effort. The pitch has nearly always looked immaculate, well done. Edited 23 April, 2010 by saint lard
bpsaint Posted 22 April, 2010 Posted 22 April, 2010 Credit to the groundstaff,I was quite concerned when Dave Roberts left that our pitch would suffer but it still looks immaculate week in week out! Anyone know if our ground staff still look after Bournemouths pitches?
Bailey Posted 22 April, 2010 Posted 22 April, 2010 Full credit to all the groundsman, a fantastic job! The pitch has been first-class this season and they've done well to battle some difficult conditions, especially when we had a lot of snow.
Right sider Posted 22 April, 2010 Posted 22 April, 2010 Think he was on BBC Breakfast last week talking about problems at Wembley.
St Landrew Posted 22 April, 2010 Posted 22 April, 2010 Credit to the groundstaff,I was quite concerned when Dave Roberts left that our pitch would suffer but it still looks immaculate week in week out! Anyone know if our ground staff still look after Bournemouths pitches? Me too. Dave would be the perfect person the advise Wembley, and that mudpan of Stamford Bridge [or have they finally sorted it, after all these years..?], as well.
VectisSaint Posted 22 April, 2010 Posted 22 April, 2010 Well I think this is a major part of our problem. If we had a crap pitch then we would get used to it and also be able to play on all of the **** pitches when we are away from home.
bpsaint Posted 22 April, 2010 Posted 22 April, 2010 Me too. Dave would be the perfect person the advise Wembley, and that mudpan of Stamford Bridge [or have they finally sorted it, after all these years..?], as well. Pretty sure Dave's right hand man left us to join the ground staff at Wembley not long before it opened. Don't think it really matters who they get in,that pitch needs to be dug up properly and seeded instead of just laying turf on top of the gravel underneath. They should have considered putting a transparent/sliding roof on the stadium to allow more light in,just like the Amsterdam Arena rather than the pointless half sliding one they have.
John Boy Saint Posted 22 April, 2010 Posted 22 April, 2010 If Andy Gray was the chap who was Dave Roberts right hand man he was always the one to come up with the prettier patterns in the cut. The pattern that always threw me was the one that follows the line of the centre circle: if you are sat higher up in the Chapel or Northam it actually makes the pitch look like there is a bloomin great big dip with the centre line at the bottom of it. Well done Andy and his team!

Right sider Posted 23 April, 2010 Posted 23 April, 2010 Problem lies in the lack of air as well as light, the nrown thatch layer under the green stuff goes manky and slimy and that is why it slides around, nothing to do with turf or seeding, just not enough circulation.
Jeff Le Taxi Posted 23 April, 2010 Posted 23 April, 2010 Is it me or is the grass cut to represent the 76 season shirt sometimes? with corresponding thick and thin stripes.
John Boy Saint Posted 24 April, 2010 Posted 24 April, 2010 Is it me or is the grass cut to represent the 76 season shirt sometimes? with corresponding thick and thin stripes. It certainly does, to my mind the best strip we had.
SNSUN Posted 24 April, 2010 Posted 24 April, 2010 Remember when Torres kicked away the penalty spot? If he did that at SMS, someone would tear him a new one.
