Window Cleaner Posted 1 May, 2010 Share Posted 1 May, 2010 (edited) Good post Damon. But why do some Bournemouth fans hate Saints but not, apparently, the Skates? After all they are the Premiership club? Don't understand that either, during the Cherries glory days (well when they played good football under Bond anyway) plenty of Saints fans used to take a trip most Saturday afternoons when they were at home and Saints weren't. (That was before many people went to faraway games and the Internet for all was still just a few scratchings on the back of a fag packet on Tim Berners-Lee's desk). We always seemed pretty welcome as fellow travellers on the good football route. JackanorySFC Posted 1 May, 2010 Share Posted 1 May, 2010 To be honest I think it's fair to say Bournemouth is a far nicer town, leafy seaside place compared to our proud but bombed out Port City - hence why so many pensioners like to retire there! Just looking at, for example, % of people that live in Council Houses and local demographics(from the 2001 cencus) So'ton - Total Population = 218k, 19.1% council houses and 37% social grade ABC1 Bournemouth - Total Population = 165k, 6.7% council houses and 48% social grade ABC1 P*mpey = Total Population = 187k, 13.3% council houses and 45% social grade ABC1
Damen Posted 1 May, 2010 Share Posted 1 May, 2010 Good post Damon. But why do some Bournemouth fans hate Saints but not, apparently, the Skates? After all they are the Premiership club? Because they've given us no reason to hate them. You dont see any (or at least very very few) Pompey shirts in Bournemouth, and they dont claim to have saved us etc. Its really not a geographical thing, and its only based on about two factors, as ive already pointed out. Their new kit is fecking disgusting. Agreed!!! Seeing it in the flesh, its not as bad as the internet suggests, but its still a poor poor effort. Proper red and black stripes are what we all wanted. corsacar saint Posted 1 May, 2010 Share Posted 1 May, 2010 I just hope we hammer Bournemouth twice in the league next season, but I would not put money on us winning at Dean Court, unless we add a bit more steel to our midfield.

Massimo Osti Posted 1 May, 2010 Share Posted 1 May, 2010 Never really looked at the football scene in Bournemouth other than seeing a few cherrrys "alternative element" in the bar med there a few years back and the same minded followers who seemed to appear in the eagle post match a few times 3/4 seasons ago. But today having not gone to Kent to get rained on I took advantage of a break in the cloud to have an hour or so with my nipper on the beach and also hook up and have a beer with some Stoke lads I know well from my England away travels. Awayday wise the place really does seem to draw mixed reviews, in that on a nice warm weekend it offers a good lads "beano" away type break. But as a matchday drink its seen by peeps in the know as a non starter i:e you cant get a drink anywhere near the ground and the OB are really heavy handed before during and in the evening after a game. Probably in the same way that the Dorset Constabulary are far more likely to do you for speeding as they have a much larger traffic budget due to having no motorway to police on there beat they also only really have one football team to worry about . Vale took allot of lads down today and were drinking in the moon under the water wetherspoon pub , an Irish place in the precinct and in the O'Neils up further up towards the ground. It was this pub we were in about 3 seasons ago when we had the midweek friendly/ish game. Many did not have tickets and saw the game as a weekend away on the lash, I can see our away tie being played midweek evening time as the return trains aren't the best but we will undoubtedly take big numbers so will at least get a drink as the OB will definitely want us all in one area. Stoke lads who did have tickets seemed to drift off in twos and threes and get taxis upto Dean Court ala Reading / Milton Keynes. All in all at looks like an anti climax will be had in respect to our visit unless of course the bingo buses , a packed lunch, and a can of tizer appeal ;-}
ericb Posted 2 May, 2010 Share Posted 2 May, 2010 I live in soton but work in bournemouth and i've got to say it's a far nicer city than southampton and with a much better nightlife. The funny thing is that despite the wine bars there's much less pretension there than in say Bedford Place. Personally i'd put that down to a combination of things, firstly southampton lacks decent places so badly that the ones that do exist seem to be populated by people who think they're the dogs ******** (when normally they're posing ****s). Add to that the student element who really believe they're something special and you can get quite a stuck up crowd. On the flip side we've got some really rough places in town where you're more than likely to see trouble on a friday/saturday night (probably down to southampton not being the richest city in the world). Bournemouth on the other hand has some really nice pubs/clubs (60million postcards for one) that would be pretentious as **** here but remain chilled there. I don't know if that's down to the amount of weekenders in bournemouth but it does seem to be the case. Sad really since there's no reason southampton shouldn't have a decent nightlife, but we just seem to cater to students getting hammered and barn like clubs with no character. RobM Posted 2 May, 2010 Share Posted 2 May, 2010 Southampton is a ****e night out. Bedford place is OK but full of students or stuck-up tossers. The lower end of town is good if you're looking for drugs or a fight. Leisure World is good if you're looking for a 15 year old slag, a WKD and a fight. Bournemouth has it's fair share of this too, but largely has a more relaxed atmosphere. But then, my idea of a good night out involves drinking and having a laugh with mates rather than getting smashed and looking for a STI and a fight. I wouldn't want to live in the centre of either, but as a city, I much prefer Southampton. When it comes to the football, I wish Bournemouth well and I feel no hatred nor love towards them. Anything that promotes South coast football is a good thing, so I hope Bournemouth do well. But I honestly think, with a bit of investment and stability, League 1 is their level and no more. OldNick Posted 2 May, 2010 Share Posted 2 May, 2010 Very small? Surely very small is Weymouth, Eastleigh, Dorchester etc? You just cant miss an opportunity for some patronising can you? And are you not patronising saying those clubs are small, you obviously believe you are a mcu h bigger club than them. So you are also patronising. The fact is that Southampton are a much bigger club than Bournemouth and have never been on our radar. Our fall from grace has pulled us down to where we are and I for one have always said that we should respect any clubs who have earned the right to play us. You have, but I will not be looking to have you as our major rival. I have many Cherries fans who try nad make a rivalry, a need to be noticed i suppose. The point is who is most likely to gain the place back in higher leagues? You will come like Yeovil , like Reading trying to make it a 'Big Derby' but most will still look at it as our old auntie coming around, we forgot what she looks like, but be nice as she wont be here much longer

And we were not wearing football shirts or colours so not sure what their problem was.

I don't drink but my mates had a few They knew we were local, they knew we were not students so didn't let us in. We expected that anyway. I once saw a student in a "rugger" shirt in lizard lounge, and the doorman had no answer when I asked what the difference between that and a football shirt (not that I'd like to see football shirts in a bar anyway, but you get my point)

ericb Posted 2 May, 2010 Share Posted 2 May, 2010 The student thing is the worst thing about this city. Why the hell should there be clubs/bars/pubs we're not allowed into in our city? I can understand barring trouble makers but it's just offensive to stop someone coming in because they're not a student (student union being an exception). Agreed and the student attitude is they don't want to drink with the pikeys that are non-students, they like there little student bubble. It's the same in every uni town though, I used to feel the same but had my best nights out when not around obnoxious students, they need to see the real world and meet people like Stueey and Delldays. Nothing like a good old-fashioned sweeping generalisation! I studied in Soton (the old LSU had a 1:7 male to female ratio and halls in Archers Rd, where else would I have gone?) I don't recall thinking myself any better than anyone local, besides perhaps the bitter Neanderthals who thought it was acceptable practice to try and target students for a beating, presumably as a means of expressing their (not "there") resentment at not having been blessed with two brain cells to rub together. Can't say I picked up any sense of superiority among anyone I studied with either. I don't see why there needs to be student-only bars off campus, but I'm not sure I see why anyone who particularly resents the student presence would especially want to drink in them anyway. Going somewhere else remains a viable option I presume?

To be fair i've been to uni twice and don't think they're all ****s, but there does seem to be a higher collection of the posh up themselves types in Soton than a lot of places (mainly from the main Uni). Put your giant rolling eyes away, I'm not impressed!! I was agreeing as regards keeping student-only policies on campus (and off of Bedford Pl and such-like) just raising a polite objection to the tarring of a whole section of the populace with the same brush! Fair enough, as regards the posers and "posh up themselves types". I can see how they'd grate on anyone's nerves...!
