Bournemouth - Local Derby

I heard Eddie Howe on 5Live last night. He comes across very well indeed, level-headed and well spoken. What he has achieved at Bournemouth when you consider his age and the transfer embargo is quite remarkable.

Of course Bournemouth fans will be looking forward to their 'Derby' game against us, we should consider it flattering.

Manager of the year IMO, done an amazing job. Fair play to the guy, agree that he always came a cross as a decent guy even when i saw him interviewed as a player. Hope he has a long and successful career in management and if he carries on like this a bigger club (no disrespect to Bournemouth) will be knocking on his door before to long.

I was talking to a director at Bournemouth and asked him about Howes win rate. 57% according to him since he became manager. That is magnificent

As I recall the start of this (now 4 page thread) realted to whether or not B' mouth was a "derby" match or not ...

and especailly as we haven't played them in a League fixture since 1959-60 !

However, we have discussed what constitutes a "derby game ?..if its the same city then we don't have any derby games - not even Pompey, however, a local game (derby or not) must relate to : geography, ease of access. Date (saturdays or midweek) and travel costs, and how well WE.. or "the opposition" are doing at the time.

Looking back at this season, away fans stats. aren't always published and they may only reflect ticket sales or coach bookings and fans who travel on their own or who live/work closer may go and pay at the gate.

..but here are some for interest sake;

L .Orient gate 7544..... saints fans 3200

Northampton 4858..... 2013

Millwall 11524.... 1959

Walsall 5681..... 1791

Brentford 6501..... 1783

Bristol Rovers 8607..... 1746

Mostly southern based clubs here.

lowest away fans quoted. obviously much further to travel to...

Hartlepool 3818..... 635

Oldham 5341..... 924

Southend 8281..... 1050

Most away games provided better than average attendances and in some cases ...best of the season for the "home side "

SO.... I wonder how many B' mouth fans will come up to SMS ?

Anyone else hear their chairman on Late Kick Off? He said;

"My biggest ambition is to make this club one of the top 3 on the south coast. If we could be challenging with the likes of Southampton, Brighton and Yeovil that would be fantastic".

Made me chuckle :D

When did we last play Bournemouth in a competitive match? I have been following Saints since the 60's and I can only vaguely remember perhaps a single League Cup game. It seems strange that we havn't drawn them more often although I suppose they were often out of the cups by the time we entered.

I remember us paying Weymouth in the cup many moons ago.

Does that count?:p

I have been thinking about Bournemouth, I hope we play them August Bank Holiday, would love nothing more than 10,000 of us doing a Leeds United on their beach. :-)

Yeah really funny. They caused thousands of pounds worth of damage, really amusing if Saints fans did the same, Markus would be so proud.

Quite. As a compromise, why not relocate the proposed activity to Pompey, which would result in thousands of pounds worth of improvements?! I believe there's a stadium there that'll need clearing to make way for some flats soon....

I particularly like that they're now having to acknowledge their inferiority to Yeovil!

As for "challenging" and "Southampton" in the same sentence. Now that's just plain silliness...

Had to LOL at Skatesmuff not being on the list .... they obviously regard themselves superior to the fishy few already

Must admit I don't quite get it with AFCB fans. One of my line management is a fan of theirs and the poor sod can't stop talking about the "derby" games next season and about winning at SMS. I had to tell him I, and many thousand other Saints, couldn't give a sh1t about them and how utterly irrelevant they are which rather deflated him but then he's a complete effing tosser anyway....:D

Despite that I will admit that Eddie Howe has performed a minor miracle given their circumstances over the last 2 seasons.

I actually used to want them to do well. Then they started acting like tw*ts, calling us Scummers, and trying to make out there is a rivalry.

Now I am just indifferent.

Yup, went to their game against Grimsby last year when they won and stayed up. There were loads of anti saints chants and scummer references before, during and after the game. I thought it showed them to be the small timer wannabes they really are.

Make the most of it cherrie fans. You'll have a new south coast club to be your rivals shortly. A club more befitting for you in terms of their size and fan IQ.

Bournemouth have a good team. Small squad but, injuries aside, they have a team more than capable of holding their own in Div 1 next season. I will be laying agianst them being relegated on Betfair for sure.

I do not know how they have managed to hold onto their players this year given their financial predicament. I can only imagine it's down to the management, so yes, well done Eddie Howe.

OK, lets just clear a few things up here (im an AFCB fan).

There are a fair few fans at AFCB that have a dislike towards you lot, and to be honest, after reading this thread, im starting to go that way! (Ive never had a problem with you lot before, Aldershot, Leeds and Yeovil are more on my radar).

The reasons for this are as follows:

1) Saints fans in Bournemouth. Support your local team ffs. I know there are exiles, which I dont mind, but its those who supported you just because you were in the Prem. Funny how the number of Saints shirts in Bournemouth has dried up in recent years. (just want to add that this isnt the reason I dislike you, Man Utd shirts in Bournemouth **** me off more).

2) You all claim you are our saviour, loans players are the reason for any success, and the reason we havent gone bankrupt is because of your continuing generosity with friendlies. For starters, yes we've had a couple of loan players from you, but, excluding McGoldrick and Mills, many have failed to impress. We have also contributed to their wages whilst they've been on loan, and you also gain as they are gaining experience. Going back to the financial thing, whilst we are grateful for any friendlies (as we are to Tottenham, Pompey, West Ham, Fulham etc), there has only been one friendly for which you havent gained gate reciepts. That friendly gave us some welcome income, but it was only a very very small part of what was raised to keep to the club going. The fact you were the opponents does also not make you the new Real Madrid. You are local and have local fans. We were hardly going to arrange one against Newcastle were we.

So there you have it. We have a grand total of two reasons for dislike towards you. Many AFCB fans wont feel either, some will feel one or the other (I've started to feel the 2nd one tbh), and a small few will feel both.

Just to clear up a few other issues.

- You will get 1500 tickets at our place, providing a 4th stand isnt built in the summer (which is being talked about).

- The transfer embargo stopped us buying players, but not selling.

- The Que sera sera song. Just because we sung about going to St Marys, does not mean we are all obssessed with you. We've sung it about Shrewsbury, Coventry and Crawley. Its a song with reference to who we are playing next season, and it has to rhyme to make the song work. St Marys rhymes, and yes, we are looking forward to the local games, hence the song.

- Many of you refer to Bournemouth as a dump. Do you not go to your home games? Im inpartial, I live in neither, but come on, Bournemouth a bigger dump than Southampton? Boscombe may not be the nicest place in the world, but Bournemouth as a whole is one of the nicer British towns.

Basically, its your general arrogance towards us that gets peoples backs up. If you werent so arrogant I've got a feeling there would be quite a good rapport between the fans.

agree with everything you say - I have a similar problem at work where the few that do support them are having kittens at the prospect of playing us and although I am pleased that they have been promoted - my main wish is the same as any other game next season three points please!!!

I think they need the services of "DIAL A RIVAL" as Im afraid we are not theirs - who is? Yeovil?

Welcome to our forum Damen - Im sorry that you have the impression that we are arrogant toward you - whilst I am interested in your views from an AFCB prospective I have to say that Bournemouth is rarely mentioned at St Marys - thats not a lack of respect (many Saints fans are pleased that you have been rightly promoted) or arrogance ...... indeed there's sometimes a small cheer when they read out the half times and you are winning - its just you are not our rivals - look at the thread on the demise of the skates as a good example - it will be up to a million hits soon - that is rivalry - come to St Marys when we play them and witness the atmosphere - that is rivalry

finally good luck for next season (except for two games obviously) and heres hoping that you can keep your place in league one and build for the future

One last thing, the dislike for Pardew is not because hes your manager, but from his time as Reading manager.

Seem to recall you had quite an anti-Reading thing once, what started that by the way?

I am aware of that partly through a friend who is a Reading fan but like many on here my support in that particular rivalry was with Bournemouth.

Pleased you are promoted btw.

I come from niether Bournemouth or Southampton but live in Bournemouth (only through marriage). And I'm sorry Damen, it is a dump. Give me Southampton any day of the week.

If you think its a nicer town I suggest you wander around Bournemouth town centre on your own one night and see how lovely it is then. I felt safer walking the streets of New York City than I did Old Christchurch Road !!

And sorry to most on here but the nicer town is Bournemouth IMO but what do I know?

I take it your an exile then?

So basically becuase we're a bigger club than you (and we are which ever way you look at it) we're arrogant? seems to me it's more Bournemouth fans having little man syndrome. It seems your desperate to find reasons to hate us (the two you've listed are pretty flimsy). While saints fans really aren't bothered about Bournemouth at all.

in the likely event of saints not going up, we have the pleasure of playing the cherries next season

for some reason they see us as some sort of big rival...I used to always want them to win.

Have I missed something here in the football rivalry food chain..?

ARE they a big rival to us other than a local one..?

ARE we going to have thousands of cherries at SMS trying to kick off..?

does anyone else find them a non-entity..?

Sorry mate, but I cant view this as a derby. We are counties apart for starters, secondly (trying not to be rude) AFC Bournemouth are nobodys in the football spectrum compared to us. This so called derby has been initiated by them........And I dont get why??? somebody please enlighten me..............
