SO16_Saint Posted 14 April, 2010 Posted 14 April, 2010 (edited) What would it cost the club to attract Barca to play this seasons Ted Bates Trophy Friendly? Would be awesome, for the fans and players alike. Would never happen, but nice dreaming Edited 15 April, 2010 by SO16_Saint
Andy_Porter Posted 14 April, 2010 Posted 14 April, 2010 Would be amazing. I was wondering during the Barca - Arsenal game how we'd get on against playing Barca and I honestly think they would probably beat us with 8 against our 11. They're current XI is probably the best team i've ever seen play.
Ponty Posted 14 April, 2010 Posted 14 April, 2010 And unlikely. Sent from my laptop using Tappyfingers.
oxfordshire_saint Posted 14 April, 2010 Posted 14 April, 2010 Maybe if Cortese ever went to Milan we could ask them for an annual friendly in return. We'd probably beat their bunch of pensioners too (if Pato didn't play)
Saint_clark Posted 14 April, 2010 Posted 14 April, 2010 Thought this was actually happening when I read the title.
Colinjb Posted 14 April, 2010 Posted 14 April, 2010 Thought this was actually happening when I read the title. So did I, oh well. Sent from my iPhone using Breadfish.
John Boy Saint Posted 14 April, 2010 Posted 14 April, 2010 Play them at Camp Nou late July just so I can go and watch the game while on my Holi's!! sent from my taplop whilst coping with my dyslexia.
Matthew Le God Posted 14 April, 2010 Posted 14 April, 2010 I'd imagine that the club would go for a really big side for this years Ted Bates Trophy as it is the 125th year. It would be a good way to open the season even if there was a high fee to get them to play it would be recouped if the draw of a big team attracted a crowd in the high 20k's like Bayern Munich did at St Mary's.
Saint_lambden Posted 14 April, 2010 Posted 14 April, 2010 Messi takes on Harding down the wing then picks out a pass to Ibrahimovic who is tackled by Jaidi..... ........anyone else finding this unlikely?

Saint_clark Posted 14 April, 2010 Posted 14 April, 2010 Valencia? They're hard up aren't they? I'd love to see us play Zaragoza. My second favourite city, after our own fair one of course.
Arizona Posted 14 April, 2010 Posted 14 April, 2010 Surely Barca have hundreds of preseason friendly offers from accross Europe. They must have much better and more challenging offers than us. Nice idea though. Personally I'd like us to play Dynamo Kiev, but their summer off season is very short. The Ukrainian League is one of the first to start and the last to end. Sent from my back garden using smoke signals.
Matthew Le God Posted 14 April, 2010 Posted 14 April, 2010 Surely Barca have hundreds of preseason friendly offers from accross Europe. They must have much better and more challenging offers than us. Teams like Barca charge a large fee for away games just to turn up. This would put many teams off as it would require a large crowd to break even. Saints at St Mary's in their 125th year should be able to get close to a sell out for such a friendly so worth a try for an opponent of this calibre.
swannymere Posted 14 April, 2010 Posted 14 April, 2010 I reckon you're looking at £1M to get Barca to play here pre-season.

Got to be Brighton imo
Matthew Le God Posted 14 April, 2010 Posted 14 April, 2010 Got to be Brighton imo Why? Brighton was the first game at The Dell in 1898. Hence why it was the last game at The Dell in 2001. They weren't Saints first game 125 years ago in 1885.
AlfredKo Posted 15 April, 2010 Posted 15 April, 2010 The team who we played in the Ted Bates Trophy last year, Ajax is going to win the Dutch league. Thus, we should be playing an even greater team than them.

Surely someone needs to reform our arch rivals Freemantle FC for that one?
alpine_saint Posted 15 April, 2010 Posted 15 April, 2010 Would have thought with NCs links, its more likely to be AC Milan or Juve.
Stuntman Mike Posted 15 April, 2010 Posted 15 April, 2010 Would be amazing. I was wondering during the Barca - Arsenal game how we'd get on against playing Barca and I honestly think they would probably beat us with 8 against our 11. They're current XI is probably the best team i've ever seen play. I think they'd beat us comfortably and would be a bad idea to start the season having been thrashed at the hands of their reserves. Would do the confidence of players no good at all. The key is to find a side that will attract punters, but also one that's not going to totally demolish the team and their confidence. A mid-table Serie A side etc? Sent from my underground bunker via the Enigma machine
JustMike Posted 15 April, 2010 Posted 15 April, 2010 And unlikely. Sent from my laptop using Tappyfingers. i laughed

Essruu Posted 15 April, 2010 Posted 15 April, 2010 Messi takes on Harding down the wing then picks out a pass to Ibrahimovic who is tackled by Jaidi..... ........anyone else finding this unlikely? Yes, Harding would've tackled him before he got the pass in.
Dan Posted 15 April, 2010 Posted 15 April, 2010 Barcalona at home would be boring, a weekend out there on the pish however would be very different. Barca away at the Nou Camp.
IamLeGod Posted 15 April, 2010 Posted 15 April, 2010 Yes, Harding would've tackled him before he got the pass in. Harding would have messi in his pocket all night! Sent via scrawling of chalk on my blackboard
Dan Posted 15 April, 2010 Posted 15 April, 2010 Speaking of pre season matches, any talk of a European tour? Or proposed matches. Would be nice to see saints crowned champions and watch them in Europe all in the same year.
Alain Perrin Posted 15 April, 2010 Posted 15 April, 2010 Ain't going to happen. Sent by my c*ck, using TappyB*llocks.

Junior Mullet Posted 15 April, 2010 Posted 15 April, 2010 I reckon it will be a Champions League Italian team. Sent via a carrier pigeon with a gammy foot.
South City Si Posted 15 April, 2010 Posted 15 April, 2010 AC Milan or Fiorentina would be a good bet.
MbaleSaint Posted 15 April, 2010 Posted 15 April, 2010 The team who we played in the Ted Bates Trophy last year, Ajax is going to win the Dutch league. Thus, we should be playing an even greater team than them. Ajax are one point behind Steve McClaren's Twente with two games to play.
Thedelldays Posted 15 April, 2010 Posted 15 April, 2010 inter milan would be more realistic...they come over here every year
Fan The Flames Posted 15 April, 2010 Posted 15 April, 2010 We should always play a red and white striped team with the loser agreeing to never wear the stripes again. Start with Exeter and work up over the years to Atletico Madrid.
Durleyfos Posted 15 April, 2010 Posted 15 April, 2010 Barca, Real Madrid Inter or the Brazil team of the 1970 World Cup. Sent via a oujia board using a glass tumbler.
St.Patrik Posted 15 April, 2010 Posted 15 April, 2010 Barca will play Malmö FF in Sweden this summer - that Zlatan is from that club could help I guess.... But its not impossible if Zlatan calls his best mate mr.Östlund and asks for nice club to have a friendly at : )
benjii Posted 15 April, 2010 Posted 15 April, 2010 Surely we will play whichever foreign team is on a pre-season tour of England that has them in the vicinity of London/the south on roughly the right date. Same as evey other year, no? How about Grashopper Zurich? Has anyone always fancied Young Boys Bern?
bpsaint Posted 15 April, 2010 Posted 15 April, 2010 Playing Barca isn't that outrageous an idea TBH. Plymouth Argyle had a pre-season friendly against Real Madrid a couple of years ago.
stardustonmyfeet Posted 15 April, 2010 Posted 15 April, 2010 We should always play a red and white striped team with the loser agreeing to never wear the stripes again. Prince Jazzbo Posted 15 April, 2010 Posted 15 April, 2010 Sent from my underground bunker via the Enigma machine Surely your post should have read alsd fdod wedl wvgh rwem spef fplw rfds lfcl dfdp qsdm lowd moae. and so on We should then have to decode it using Colossus
Prince Jazzbo Posted 15 April, 2010 Posted 15 April, 2010 We should always play a red and white striped team with the loser agreeing to never wear the stripes again. Start with Exeter and work up over the years to Atletico Madrid. Athletico Bilbao? Is it right that they changed their strip to Red and White stripes after playing saints in the Fairs Cup in 1971 or is that an urban myth?
david in sweden Posted 15 April, 2010 Posted 15 April, 2010 What would it cost the club to attract Barca to play this seasons Ted Bates Trophy Friendly? Would be awesome, for the fans and players alike. Would never happen, but nice dreaming I hope they send their third team and leave Messi back home on the beach....
saint_stevo Posted 15 April, 2010 Posted 15 April, 2010 we should play lazio again, worked out great last time. sent via a child i have trapped in my study
SNSUN Posted 15 April, 2010 Posted 15 April, 2010 I think a Barca friendly would be great, our stadium may not be the Nou Camp but it's still a good showpiece for the game. Perhaps we should just hijack whoever Pompey want to play... Sent via telepathy to my missus, who typed it up for me on her abacus.
