Thedelldays Posted 28 April, 2010 Author Share Posted 28 April, 2010 But can they offer him any sort of football? They didn't this season. doddisalegend Posted 28 April, 2010 Share Posted 28 April, 2010 at the end of the day, they can offer him something we cant.. CCC (or whoever it will be) football Very true I suppose it comes down to will they actually play him though or just stick him in the reserves? Or does he see reguar football with us a better choice. At the end of the day there's nowt we can do about it. I still think Kayne Mclaggon is a good possible replacement if we don't get Antonio, if not I'm sure that must be a few good players we can plunder from someone else. I refuse to get upset about players leaving this year If Markus and NC are seroius about "The Plan" they will have to assemble a good squad so I'll just sit back and enjoy the ride. doddisalegend Posted 28 April, 2010 Share Posted 28 April, 2010 So what would you do play for Southampton at £5k a week or Reading at £6k per week We're not the ones with money problems Reading are. So we are more likely to offer more than Reading if AP really wants him. Anyway a player of my calibre 40k a week at Real Madrid I think;)
doddisalegend Posted 28 April, 2010 Share Posted 28 April, 2010 Yep. Those "we will walk this league next season" comments all over this site are looking really stupid even before this season has finished. This is just the beginning of the break-up of this seasons squad. It was always going to happen. Interesting bit from Skate Claridge in his BBC column on Sheff Wednesday being relegated quote " If they do go down, Wednesday will be in a better position to recover than Palace. They are in the middle of a takeover that will go through even if they go down. But they will know only too well from the last time they were in the third tier between 2003 and 2005 that there will be a certain amount of pressure on them as one of the bigger clubs in League One and, with the likes of Southampton and possibly Leeds and Charlton still there next season, promotion will not be a given." Looks like Claridge thinks we might be a bit of a threat. Of course you're right though Alpine we need to keep the squad together or buy very good replacements over the summer to be in with a shout of automatic promotion. The Kraken Posted 28 April, 2010 Share Posted 28 April, 2010 that was then...we once offered lallana no football... I think we can agree that antonio has improved significantly since when he first arrived I've already stated a page or two back that it's pointless speculating about what will happen until Reading's intentions are known, so I won't do that. But Antonio obviously has a choice to make; whether to carry on with a side that has, as you say, improved his game (and at just 19 he's only going to get better). Or whether to take a chance with his previous club at a higher level and risk getting less game time than he got here and therefore potentially hindering his progress. Like I say, without knowing Reading's intentions its an impossible one to call. I hope he stays, but if its set up for him to return to Reading's first team squad then you maybe wouldn't blame him for leaving for a higher standard of football. I hope he stays put. But either way, if we do lose him I have full faith in AP replacing him adequately.

The Kraken Posted 28 April, 2010 Share Posted 28 April, 2010 he is hit and miss anyway, and not first choice. Pretty sure we wont miss him It could go either way. Puncheon has been brought in and Pardew is clearly intent on having a reprisal of the Fabrice Fernandes role (a left footer even more one-footed than I am playing on the right). Saying that, Antonio is a great impact player and he is more direct in terms of running at defenders with pace than anyone else we have. So who knows... Minsk Posted 28 April, 2010 Share Posted 28 April, 2010 I'm pretty sure Antonio's contract with Reading ends in June. If reading want any money for him they have to offer him a new contract, which I think they will (if only to get some cash, as we will surely want his services; or someone else will). At the end of the day it is simply down to him. Either: he wants try again at Reading (personally, I doubt it); he wants to stay with us (quite probable); he wants to try his luck elsewhere (possible, but unlikely IMO). Either way, the future is in his own hands.

I tend to agree with this. At the risk of being put into the "In Pards we trust" bucket, I think we will begin next season with a better squad than that which we end. I'm not sure if Antonio falls into that category yet, I think he's at the point in his career where it can go either way. Reading were always going to trigger any extension that was low risk and probably low cost, IMO, rather than lose him on a "free" and I think this is quite an interesting call now for us - what price is now good value for a fee - 200K? 500K? He's probably not an automatic starter for either side from day one next season either, so does he think he'll get more games there or here, or is he just deciding on the size of the pay packet? You can argue that one either way if you put yourself in his position. I think he has the potential and would be worth around a 400K bid, to keep that part of continuity within the squad. I'd be happy with that, plus a box to box midfielder and Thiery Henry, who surely is heading here after being an unused Barca sub against 10 men tonight (perhaps that's for next summer...) The only reason they have taken up this option is so they can demand a transfer fee.

Nail on head DPS, Reading would have got a small development fee if he came to us on a free, but with him under contract they can hold out for a fee, be it from us or any other club as he has been in the shop window with us. Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 29 April, 2010 Share Posted 29 April, 2010 My take is that Reading are extending his contract in order to drive up any potential fee. They know we're interested - Pardew has said so - whilst if they let it expire, they know it would go to tribunal and they probably wouldn't get their valuation met. If he's under contract it's different and they can hold out a little more strongly and, if nothing comes of our interest, they keep a player with decent potential who could materialise into a CCC standard player next year. Win win (for them!).

Only thing that worries me is that Reading may have a contract extension option of some sort , don't think they can ask for a tribunal fee though as he's only been with them 18 months or so. While I have to like the sentiment, surely it depends what offers come in during the long summer ahead. There was a rumour on here that Everton where interested in Lambert, you have to feel that if it was true and they made an offer Lambert would be pretty tempted. I think the players are happy here (they seem to be on matchdays) and are happy to stay unless a really good offer comes in ie EPL or top championship side. As a plyer it's easy to say you want to stay when there are no offers on the table.

A lot of time, effort and resources have gone into rebuilding the infrastructure back up at the club, so hoepfully the scouts will find a decent replacement.
