Antonio - Will he be a saint next season..?

If they hadnt taken up the option he would have been a free agent and they wouldn't have got a penny.

Seems that when AP talked on Saturday about doing business with Reading over Antonio he and Saints knew or were pretty sure that they would activate the years option in order to get some financial package for him.

IMHO of course !

I agree with that, they've seen how well he's done for us. Also if as stated by AP that he's been in contact with Reading over signing him, then it would fit into place that they'd activate the clause to guarantee they get a decent fee. If not & they don't want him at reading then they will have plenty of takers for a year long loan. So no risk but a decent chance of making decent money from him. Just hope we can do a sensible deal for the lad & he can be with us next season.

Excuse me

'about 3 weeks ago he spoke to a family member who is a friend of his and that time he was going back to Reading as their manager was very impressed with his showing in the JPT (especially the final)'

I was talking about how Antonio couldn't run his contract down and join us for free. Reading 'have a say' in that they have an option of offering him a contract and then getting a fee, as I explained below:

He's under 24 so Reading do have some sort of say. If they go and offer him a contract and Antonio turns it down so he can accept a contract elsewhere (us hopefully!) then we have to come to some sort of agreement over a fee.

I guess we'd be speaking to them to persuade them not to offer a contract, or to agree a fee.

A lot of people were saying Antonio could just run his contract down and join us for free, which is what I was explaning. I don't believe you were...

It's a no-brainer for Reading.

The lad's probably on about £750 a week. By ensuring they retain him under contract they can probably expect to get about £200-300k if someone buys him.

If it went to the compensation tribunal they would probably get about 20-30% of that given that he has only been there for one year and hasn't played higher than League One.

So for a manaegeable expenditure of around £40-50k over a season, which as people have said can be largely recouped through a loan deal easily, they have given themselves the prospect of making an extra £200k or so on any transfer.

Because it isn't a transfer of the player's registration from one team to another.

He is out of contract and thus becomes unattached and not a Reading player.

Any payment to Reading is a development compensation fee.

maybe you should pipe down..further up this thread you were TELLING me/us that reading have nothing to do with all this etc..

Be really p*ssed off if we don't get him.

Me too, but the timing of this from Reading gives me hope. Why do this now, before the season ends when his contract probably runs until 30 June, as most footballers contracts seem to.

I reckon Saints are looking to tie this deal up pretty quickly, get him to sign some sort of pre-contract agreement. Reading, for their part, are just ensuring they get their share, especially if they are a bit short of money.

1. Why didn't they sign him for longer?

2. Even if they do, everyone has their price.

why should they...they may want him to prove to THEM that he deserves a new deal..challenge him to break into their first team like he did with us...maybe that would automatically trigger another new deal

Nothing I have said has been showed to be wrong. Antonio would have had to agree to the extension, he could have turned it down. He has probably benefitted from the extension and will further benefit from a transfer to Saints (along with his agent).

so, basically, it has as much to do with reading as anyone then..?

he has signed extension at reading Fact its on bbbc website

No its not.....he hasn't signed an extension they have taken up the option of a further year. The club has taken up the option, Antonio has signed nothing except his roiginal contract back in 2008.

which does mean that he might prefer playing in the championship rather than div 1.......

I think we can take that he will be going back......anything else will be a big bonus

Exactly!

I hope he still signs for us but he may get better opportunities in a Championship side with good facilities and who have finished the season strongly.

The arrogance of some people is astounding!

When you sign an unknown it is not unusual for the period of contract to be short, in Antonio's case until end of 2009/10 season. To prevent the player moving on at the end of that period when he has proved he has a good future it is normal to put into the original contact a club option to extend it for another period, in this case another year. It is in the contract Antonio signed. He cannot refuse, it was not an option on both sides.

It explains why Pardew did not sign him in January for a small fee or have an option to sign at the end of the loan period. There was every chance Reading might extend as has been proved right

Antonio is strong but far from being a good player at a higher level. I would have liked him to stay for another season but he does make a lot of wrong decisions on the field and does not yet have a good football brain. However he may learn. That is what has attracted Reading to keep him on their books.

Let us hope Reading are happy to let us continue his development with a further loan period.

Until Reading's intentions are known it's complete guesswork as to where Antonio will be next season. Reading may have seen his progress as a positive and want to give him a chance at a higher level. They may want him to come back to us on another long term loan with a view to retaining his services following on from that. Or they may just be being business-like and, knowing that we want him, have signed in so they can negotiate a transfer fee with a rich club rather than claim compensation.

I hope he stays, but the signs aren't great; if they didn't rate him we could have just come to a financial agreement that they would have opted out of the one year extention. With Antonio on Reading's books (the Reading OS seems to state that he definitely is) then they hold all the cards.

as it is clear we would want him they would clearly extend this contract

1) as they want him back

2) or they are happy for us to have him but this will now get them cash

We didn't know about this clause but don't really think it means they want him any more than they did yesterday, or they he wants to play for Reading anymore than he did.

As said before if Pardew wants him, and he wants to stay I am sure he will

Yep.

Those "we will walk this league next season" comments all over this site are looking really stupid even before this season has finished.

This is just the beginning of the break-up of this seasons squad.

It was always going to happen.

It's funny but I was just reading the Lallanna thread on here and people are saying if he wants to leave there's nothing we can do you can't keep players who want to leave. Now I come on this thread and read Reading hold all the cards.

Simply if Antonio doesn't become our player it's either becuase he didn't want to or we didn't want him bad enough. If he wants to be a Saint, cash strapped Reading will sell him.

A bit early to say that Alpine. I have no doubt that players will leave and new players will arrive. We don't even know which teams we will play next season. We really can't say how well we will/won't do until the season starts and we know are team and our oppostion.

Still waiting for you to explain your "arrogance" remark !

What has constituted arrogance in a thread talking about our possibility of signing a player has escaped me !!

......because of this incredible belief that somehow no player could possibly not want to come to us even though it's reported that he's had his contract renewed by a championship side!

Antonio has said that he would be more than happy to stay here. Read the article on the OS for confirmation.

It is not arrogant talking about a player preferring to be here than at Reading when he has stated he would like to stay. Its taking the words out of the horses mouth....which for this forum is a rarity I'll grant you, but in this case not so.

If he wanted to sign for Reading a quote would have been published from him saying as much. They've taken up the option, to strengthen their hand in negotiations for him. He had no say in this. He may well end up back at Reading next season but only if Reading demand more than Pardew is willing to pay. This is unlikely as Reading are rumoured to need the cash so will probably take a reasonable offer.

Antonio saying he'd be more than happy to stay here does not mean he'd prefer to be here than Reading.

Or trying to get a better contract at Reading lets face most footballers dont care who they play for only how much they are paid

In that case we have the stronger hand as we're not cash strapped like Reading. The money only goes so far though, I doubt to many EPL players would join us in league one if Marcus decided to put all good sense aside and really go silly with money. Look at Sol Campbell and the Notts county debacle after one game he left despite his bumper pay packet.

So what would you do play for Southampton at £5k a week or Reading at £6k per week

For me I hope he signs for us, let's see if his words are meaningless - and who would blame him if they were?
