entitled to your opinion......................

However respect works both ways

I'm not looking for respect for myself. The respect I appreciate is from people I like and admire. So that rules out a fair few on here.

I would just ask for respect for others but especially those that are disadvantaged in one way or another. Not a lot to ask really.

how times change.

I can still remember the times when Bernard Manning was one of the most popular comedians in the world, never mind the UK.

His racist material was tearing up the UK, it was even tearing up Vegas 30 years ago. In the UK cities he'd be selling out venues wherever he went, and had people of all colours and creeds in stitches in his audiences. He'd be appearing on national TV regularly Saturday nights making racist jokes.

Sure there were people who hated it but they just didn't complain about it, they just ignored it/didn't watch it and got on with their lives. They weren't forced to watch it.

Sure, times move on and this is reflected in the way that the likes of Manning/Roy Chubby Brown went more 'underground' as it were and became gradually less popular due to changing and 'more tolerant' attitudes, especially during and after the anti-racism/sexism/discrimination drive which only really started in the mid 90s

Speaking as a Boyle fan, sure there are plenty of people who won't like him and will be offended by him and it is fairly obvious why. I like him for the politically incorrect aspect of his comedy, and his method of challenging taboos where few would elsewhere dare. I agree that he can go too far, when he starts making jokes where he starts offending people for the sake of it.

As for this lady, she was a fan of Boyle. She knew his comedy. She knew he poked fun at taboos. I bet she laughed when he poked fun at other people regardless of what it was based on. Yet as soon as he pokes fun that just so happens to affect her directly she doesn't like it any more. Hypocrisy there?

If you don't like Boyle, don't watch him. Plenty of people were offended by Manning years ago yet he wasn't widely condemned. People had the sense to not watch him if they thought they would be offended by him, instead of watching him and being offended despite having a good knowledge of his act in the first place. Very simple concept. It's like driving a car at 120mph down a motorway, crashing and then complaining to the car manufacturers because you crashed.

It's the politically correct bandwagon calling for his head that I and a lot of other people object to. Far too many people in this world throw their whole support behind the concept of 'free speech' on the condition that the 'speech' doesn't offend them

Soppy I can only speak for myself.

I abhor censorship of any sort. I believe that political parties like the BNP should be able to spout their vile diatribe (in the hope that people will see them for what they are) I absolutely believe in Freedom of Speech. I think censorship is dangerous, mainly because no-one can ever forsee what might be censored in the future.

I have no problem with people watching Boyle or any other comedian - and laughing if they're comfortable with that. I wouldn't ever advocate that such 'comedians' are banned.

All I have EVER said is that, having seen him on TV, I don't find his humour appealing at all and I wouldn't hand over any of my hard-earned to him. I've then tried to explain why I don't think he's funny.

If others do, well that's their prerogative. Let's just hope it doesn't bite them in the bum one day.

Taking the pish out of the mentally ill is kind of low because they can't have a go back, but that's just rather unfunny shock humour (as practised by Boyle, Carr and their ilk) for you. If he has crossed a line and ****ed you off then quietly stop watching him, proclaiming how offended you are only enhances his popularity with other as a badass maverick standing up to the forces of censorship, rather than a mediocre comedian attempting to "push the boundaries" by portraying himself as a bit of a c*nt.

But what's more interesting about this thread is the "PC Brigade" comments. The main people publicising this storm in a teacup are the mid-market tabloids (Mail/Express, pretty much the polar opposite to the PC Brigade, no? Was there outraged articles in the Guardian about this affair, because I must have missed them?) who have been waiting to get Boyle into hot water ever since he made some crap joke about the Queen having "bats in her pussy" or some such shortly after the Ross/Brand thing.

Said tabloids couldn't care less about that joke or indeed this one, but they do care about the fact that Boyle is a popular part of a popular Friday night show on the BBC. If enough of a fuss is kicked up it will actually probably enhance Boyle's stand-up career but get him kicked off Mock the Week. Presumably the audience won't care for his replacement as much, the show's ratings will go downhill, and aforementioned tabloids will have won a little battle in the war against their mortal enemy, the (repulsively PC, apparently) BBC.

So I think the beardy-vegan-pacifist-whiny-sandal wearing-lentil eating types some of youse imagine are doing the complaining should be let off the hook...it's just a media thing :)

I love some of Frankie's stuff, I was also a great fan of Bill Hicks who made you wince sometimes when he got close to the mark.

I like it when it's funny, clever, offensive and constructive.

IMO this time Boyle has got it so wrong.

No clever point, no alternative view behind the observation, just an attack on someone because they look different and have a short life expectancy - and also he was ignorant on the subject, a cardinal sin for a comedian.

So we ended up with nothing clever, nothing funny, just misguided and badly presented abuse - a lazy set that must have been knocked together at the last minute.

Is he now looking for the Sun audience who don't need quality behind the gag?

I thought it was a really poor routine in many ways, does that make me a member of the PC brigade trying to stifle free speech?

God no, I love it when people push the limits but I just want some quality in the comedy.

Adam Hills did some good one legged jokes when I saw him in Birmingham, then told the heckling c unt in the front row who shouted at him,' how would you like it if you only had one leg?', 'I have, mate. How do you feel having a go at the disabled? Your one sick ****er, picking on a disabled one legged man.'

Just got back from seeing him in skatesville. Was very enjoyable but as I expected it wasn't side splitting stuff. I don't believe it's meant to be. I Was cringed out, disgusted and throw in to the mix sympathy. The sympathy was for frankie as he explained how the situation in the media come about. Totally blown out of proportion by the pc brigade. He told the joke that got him in trouble and it was just the same stuff the whole show was filled with. If the woman didn't like his stuff she should have left after 5 mins (or not even gone for that matter) rather than take offense at the point it related to her family.

Btw frankie took the p!ss out of Southampton, saying it has an extra layer of sh1t over it compared to Portsmouth!!!! For that I hate him and I'm offended. Who do I contact in the media??????

See above post.

What does the "PC Brigade" actually even mean, when people can use it to refer to the same tabloids who spend all their time ranting about "PC"?

The bit that sticks in my mind tonight was the bit about Southampton. The skates were applauding when he slagged us and our city off, saying most sotonians have 8 toes on each foot and that our city is another level of sh1t.

Hearing some skate shout out "scummers" got my blood boiling too. Funny how that can offend me so much considering the rest of the abuse being dished out throughout the show.

Thankfully, I know it's likely the joke was told the other way around in Southampton ;-) nonetheless I won't be giving any money to their bilge hall again... ;-)

Good show though :-D

Went to see him alst night. Was funny in the most, but got tiresome at times.

The jokes he got slagged off for didn't seem that bad in the scheme of things, in fact I would say they were more insulting about the parents of people with Downs thatn the people themselves, maybe that's what annoyes the couple more?!

I haven't made a fuss!

In a nutshell, I said I didn't believe in censorship and I do believe in freedom of speech.

I also said I wouldn't be comfortable in my own skin if I offended someone (even unwittingly, let alone deliberately). I imagine most reasonable people feel the same.

I haven't seen his 'act' - I have seen him on MTW and didn't find him funny.

Most performers like Frankie have warnings on their tour posters...

'If easily offended please stay away'

Even if anyone misses that the clue is in the title of the tour...

'I'd happily punch everyone of you in the face'

I don't condone some of Frankie's humour, but when it comes down to it, the lady concerned must have been prepared for his humour. So, I wonder whether she laughed at ANY of his jokes...or was offended by everything??

You can bet your bottom dollar that someone else would have found the bits she found funny offensive.

Just as an aside...when the whole Jonathan Ross/Brand/Sachs thing blew up...three days after the programme was broadcast, there were about THREE complaints.

Cue the Daily Mail readers getting involved, next thing you know...TENS OF THOUSANDS complaining.

But aren't the PC Brigade all poncey lefty Guardianista pussies? Why are the freedom-loving, call a spade-a-spade tabloids having a pop at Boyle, who as I mentioned is employed by their enemy the BBC?

Seems to me like the right gets offended on behalf of others and makes a fuss when it suits them just as much as those on the left, but through their dominance of the news media has managed to characterise it as an exclsuively "lefty" thing...

And if there's one other person who's influenced me in that way I think, someone who is a maverick, someone who does that to the system, then, it's Ian Botham. Because Beefy will happily say "that's what I think of your selection policy, yes I've hit the odd copper, yes I've enjoyed the old dooby, but will you **** off and leave me alone, I'm walking to John O'Groats for some spastics

I haven't read the majority of this thread but no doubt people have said something similar.

Why is it just this particular joke that’s caused so much trouble? For years he's joked about sections of society.

*touch wood* If something happened to me. Lost a limb or something. And a stand up started talking about that subject. I would still see the funny side. I wouldn't lose my sense of humour. Lighten up!

On sickapedia, I see jokes about white people, men and students. All things I am/have been. Still funny and no offence taken as it's a joke.

I'm not racist, but find racist jokes funny!

I saw him Wednesday in Portsmouth. Think he was doing Portsmouth all week. Not sure about this weekend...

Funny cos he was having breakfast at St Davids hotel in Cardiff on Wednesday morning. I saw him, looking miserable, tucking into some cereal.

I saw him live and read his book etc.. i find him funny.

The problem is as others have mentioned we find this stuff funny until the person is taking the **** out of something that effects you. Like with Frankie and this women, she probably laughed at all the jokes about foreign people, alcoholics, drug addicts, scotland, ginger people, the politic jokes, all the celeb jokes etc.. until finally it was something that she is effected by, then it becomes not funny.

Which is hypocritical. Jokes are designed to make you laugh by taking the **** out of something. If your the type of person who takes things way too serious then you shouldn't be at a Frankie Boyle show anyway.

Frankie Boyle 'live' on channel 4 now,for those interested.

Can't you just tell it's a London audience. The're all trying to hide their amusement because they're that brainwashed into being politically correct.
