bridge too far Posted 11 April, 2010 Share Posted 11 April, 2010 It's comedy ffs. Im sure he doesn't walk around at home and at the supermarket pointing and laughing at people with downs. If you are ginger or have a disability then simply don't watch comedy. The nub of the thread is the fact that some of us don't think it was 'comedy' in the first place. JackFrost Posted 11 April, 2010 Share Posted 11 April, 2010 I am sure that Bernard Manning's "jokes" were purely and simply because he was a vile racist who hated anyone of a different colour. I am unsure of Royston Vasey's humour as well. Manning was a bigoted racist who held very old fashioned prejudices. Problem is whilst most of Manning's material was filth, his timing and talent of his delivery was unequalled. And that is why he earned so much and was so successful. Back in the day, you'd be amazed at the proportion of Manning's audiences that were from an ethnic minority, who genuinely found him funny even if his act was targeted at them. As for Roy Chubby Brown, I don't know anything about him but from my experience he comes across a genuinely nasty bloke

I am unsure of Royston Vasey's humour as well. Let`s put this in context. Up until 17thC, it was acceptable to cut peoples heads off as punishment for various crimes. Nowadays we think that it is barbaric and unacceptable. In the 70`s Bernard Manning, Love Thy Neighbour and (the Blessed Spikes) Curry and Chips were acceptable and were mainstream. Times and attitudes change but we can`t say that people in the 70`s were wrong. They are wrong compared with todays standards that`s all. I wonder what people will think of us in 30 years time! Liquidshokk Posted 12 April, 2010 Share Posted 12 April, 2010 Im going to see Franky Boyle in Skatesville on Wednesday. Was a present from my brother for christmas as he knows I find this sort of comedy funny. I dont believe in holding back when it comes to making a joke. If I think something will be funny I'll say it regardless of however contrversial it may come out as. Those that know me know I dont mean it and know that really Im just looking for a reaction. This is all Frankie Boyle is doing. He knows he will get a reaction using the material he does and if anything he's clever for doing something that will separate him from all the other average, tame comedians out there. He would probably be overlooked if he wasnt so outspoken. I dont believe for a second that he is a racist or a nasty person. I feel lucky to be going to see him because I think this rare breed of comedians will be no more once the PC brigade have finally won the war.... SuperMikey Posted 12 April, 2010 Share Posted 12 April, 2010 It's a thin line between slander and comedy, and it's one that Frankie treads. He tackles taboo subjects that not many other people will talk about, let alone do stand-up comedy on. Personally, I think he's hilarious, and Mock The Week isn't the same without him. As liquidshokk pointed out, it'll be a sad day when comedy is regulated. What next, will our conversations be monitored and censored?

LA77 Posted 12 April, 2010 Share Posted 12 April, 2010 Not in the slightest. I was often called 'four eyes' at school because I wore glases then. However, there's a big difference. You and I can answer back. A lot of folk who are the butt of this 'humour' can't. I wouldn't call you peahead because I don't like insulting people. You can call me what the hell you like if you're happy to do that. Does his Blanche stylee glasses offend you?
LA77 Posted 12 April, 2010 Share Posted 12 April, 2010 I laughed when Russell Howard said he hated deal or no deal when they pretended to be mates and say things like "we will miss you, good luck I hope it's a blue" when deep down they probably hate eachother. and Boyle said "abit like this show". The timing was fantastic

JackFrost Posted 12 April, 2010 Share Posted 12 April, 2010 Boyle is a very talented comedian and I find a lot of his non PC material refreshing and very funny. There are times when he can just go over the top like with this Down's syndrome material though.

You really don't get the point, do you? Does the water addle your brain? The list you've produced consists of people who are well able to defend themselves and, as was pointed out earlier, self-deprecation is funny. But taking the p*ss out of people with disabilities just encourages discrimination. That's what's not funny.

As you have suggested, if people don't like something they shouldn't listen. anyway..so taking the mick out of asians etc is fair game then..really rip into a person and mocking them for no other reason than where they are from is OK....? It depends on whether or not it is done maliciously. And most 'humour' aimed at Asians is malicious. viz Roy Chubby Brown, Jim Davidson. Nastiness, maliciousness and humour do not go hand in hand. But maybe you like being nasty?

Reminds me of Isaac Hayes when he quite South Park. People must live it hence why his tour is a sell out with extra dates put on Buy where is the line. Who decides.. What makes it wrong to take the Mick out of one group but ok to do so to others IMO, you don't go to a Boyle gig and then get offended Totally agree.........what the hell do these ppl expect ...pc gone mad.......while unfortunate for anyone handicapped for whatever reason........its a pity their humour is handicapped as well.......
