Saint_clark Posted 11 April, 2010 Share Posted 11 April, 2010 I've given up on being entertained. A perfect day for all who believe only the result matters. We should be building for next year not fighting for scraps under the table. I found the game highly entertaining to be honest.
krissyboy31 Posted 11 April, 2010 Share Posted 11 April, 2010 (edited) I found the game highly entertaining to be honest. Good game, good win, good atmosphere and a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon made even better when the West Ham result was announced. Edit: The only thing that ruined it was the absolute joke of a Ref, who just didn't seemed to know what was going on! sadoldgit Posted 11 April, 2010 Share Posted 11 April, 2010 Another excellent result and all credit to Pardew and the lads. No doubt he will still have people calling for his head when we lose again though.

I don't believe that only the result matters, but do think it's much more important than trying to be 'entertaining' and losing. To be honest, seeing Saints winning is what entertains me after years of sh*te!

Chez Posted 11 April, 2010 Share Posted 11 April, 2010 Lambert 6 - Didn't win much in air but the poor distribution big factor. Not many chances unlucky with header though. amazed you feel that was the case. He won probably 80% of all headers against Daily and the vast majority of those were nice glamces or flicks to another Saint.
torsaint Posted 11 April, 2010 Share Posted 11 April, 2010 Yes. I reckon he won 80% of headers. He was usually nudged in the back when not winning them. Oddly enough never spotted by the ref.

He seems to have the ability to win headers even when he is pushed two yards out of the way.
Tractor_Saint Posted 11 April, 2010 Share Posted 11 April, 2010 What were the two guys behind the goal thinking - are they on Saintsweb at the time? Could have been a great picture to buy for your wall at work (Pics up on the OS now if you hadn't guessed where that came from!)

Get it up to RL and the players break off him. We won virtually everything.
Professor Posted 11 April, 2010 Share Posted 11 April, 2010 Prefering Seaborne to Jaidi. DS plays the ball well, covers a lot of ground and is far less likely to give away free kicks in dangerous positions. No disrespect to RD who did a great job for us in the autumn but regretfully he is getting too slow and is having to play the man rather than the ball a bit too often. Thought Seaborne was the weakest player yesterday TBH and Fonte had to get him out of trouble on numerous occasions. Jaidi is much more solid and a better partner to Fonte IMO. I do like Seaborne, but he does give me the jitters at times as he can make the wrong decisions. But that can be coached out of him, he's still only 21 i think. Having him in the team allows us to play from the back, he impressed me on Saturday with how he passed the ball from the back, he didn't always look to just hoof it. It does help that he's left footed, as he doesn't have to switch his position, he can just play it as soon as it comes to him. I think he gives us much more defensive balance. I can see why Pardew bought him, he has got good ability - but is prone to lapses which should be easy to coach out of him.

Next year if we want to go up automatically we'll need to develop the winning habit which means that some times we'll need to grind out some wins in tight matches. Good practice IMO. Jaidi is much more solid and a better partner to Fonte IMO. At Brighton, Jaidi was a real worry. True he got a good average of headers, but he tended to do it by climbing on the back of the forward. He could have been booked twice and sent off within the first half hour. When the ball came on the ground he was usually second to it, and had no chance chasing back, whereas Seaborne has genuine speed. If DS and Fonte complement each other thats not one getting the other out of trouble, that is a CB partnership.

Matthew Le God Posted 12 April, 2010 Share Posted 12 April, 2010 (edited) I think the potential in Seaborne is quite clear. He'll be fantastic for us next season. I've not been impressed with him so far. Passing is poor, first touch is poor, positioning is very poor and he miss times his jump for a lot of headers and when he does win a header he heads it aimlessly without thinking where it will end up. Jose Fonte has an increased work load covering for Seaborne's mistakes. We are lucky Fonte is so awesome he does the job of two centre backs. torsaint Posted 12 April, 2010 Share Posted 12 April, 2010 Seaborne missed header after header late in the game and was the reason why we came under such pressure. His clearance headers never go half as far as Jaidi's. I rate him as about the same as Davenport.
Chez Posted 12 April, 2010 Share Posted 12 April, 2010 Forster beat Seaborne in the air all day long and that worries me greatly. Seaborne is too nice. Lancashire-like. He needs to adopt a few of Jaidi's trates and start bullying these forwards. He need to get himself in the right position, the optimum position to win the header, and force the striker to climb or push him not the other way round. I thought he was okay, but not great, but even Fonte had a battle against Forster - he jumps well for a smallish bloke. But Seaborne is only young & was playing non-league two seasons ago, and personally I would back Pardew's judgement that he is going to be a very good player. I think he potentially could become a good player but I think at the moment Jaidi's extra muscle, ability in the air and experience, makes him an automatic choice if/when fit. Apart from his headers, often his clearances seem to be not well placed or go far enough but i think that this is because he is great at hassling the forward and getting his foot out in front to make contact and take the ball away from the striker - which does not give him the best control. Others need to anticipate that he will get a touch and be ready to sweep up the loose ball. I think he will develop into a really good player for us at least upto Championship level. We all know that Fonte is the class act and a very cultured CB but I think Seaborne is the one that gets stuck in and does the hassling job. He doesn't seem to mind putting his head in where others might bottle out - given a good run in the side, he will hopefully become the Svensson to Fonte's Lundekvam. Jaidi is possibly the better all round player right now but Seaborne is the future and his partnership with Fonte will be key for us next year. sidthesquid Posted 12 April, 2010 Share Posted 12 April, 2010 Having just seen the highlights on the BBC I'm glad that the ref had an aversion to giving handballs - Fonte could have had both of those in the area given by many other refs. Mr Hegley - you shared your ineptitude around fairly and all is forgiven.

One of them (IMO) was definite handball but then again that ref didn't have a clue about the handball rule or any of the others, for that matter, either.
