corsacar saint Posted 12 April, 2010 Share Posted 12 April, 2010 I did not see that coming mid afternoon. Losing to the relegation favourites is an unmitigated disaster.[in sporting terms]
Dellman Posted 12 April, 2010 Share Posted 12 April, 2010 Where there any Hamppshire men ibn the team, oh yes Adams but any others? Is it getting a bit like the footballing mercenaries who took Saints down?

Tomlinson like Adams is from Winchester, Briggs and Griffiths are from the IOW and Benham from Frimley (just the wrong side of the Surrey boundary). More locals than we've had in years tbh. Not to mention Dawson, Vince and Riazuddin, who although come from out of the county, are Academy products.

Losing to the relegation favourites is an unmitigated disaster.[in sporting terms] Yes but it wouldn't have happened if we hadn't have gone for the win. The rule changes mean that a win is worth a great deal more than a draw and a draw (points wise) isn't much better than a defeat.
Weston Saint Posted 12 April, 2010 Share Posted 12 April, 2010 No need to panic. So we lost 3 points for not drawing against a club not expected to figure at the end of the season, and with Lumb, Dimi & Cork not playing. Well done Adams. Ali seemed to bowl well second innings. Dawson is being groomed as a top order batsman and not likely to bowl much. Homegrown players Dellman!! - Adams, Dawson, Benham, Griffiths, Tomlinson, Briggs. That is over 50% of out team. wadesmith Posted 12 April, 2010 Share Posted 12 April, 2010 Tahir 3-80 for Warks. Not bad. Why is he not playing for us anymore. Did he leave us?..or did we get rid of him?

I agree during the mid-eighties it was hard to find a Hampshire player born in England. Smith Brothers (s-Africa) Marshall, Greenidge (W/Indies) PJ Baker (Holland) Paul Terry (Germany) C. Connor (Not Sure). One of the English born players that springs to mind was Rajesh Maru.
Dellman Posted 12 April, 2010 Share Posted 12 April, 2010 thank you for correcting me, I'm pleased six of the team were local; it's just that my membership papers came this morning, telling me that we have signed Ajantha Mendis, Shahid Afridi, Kabir Ali, Abdul Razzaq and Neil McKenzie this season and that the new restaurant is named after Shane Warne. No, I believe he is coming back next season. I could be wrong but from memory I think there was a question over his availibility which was why we originally signed Mendis and now we have gone for Rangana Herath : http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cricket/counties/hampshire/8603728.stm

So we lost 3 points for not drawing against a club not expected to figure at the end of the season, and with Lumb, Dimi & Cork not playing. Agreed and not panicking after one game but they had Cook, Bopara and Kaneria out which is an even bigger loss than the three we had missing. The reason that, as you say, they are not expected to figure is that they are probably the weakest team in the Div so all in all a very poor result. I realise that if Lumb and Vince had been available it would have been a different line-up, but we simply are not going to win the Championship (or even go close) with Dawson and Benham batting at 3 and 5. Both one day players only imo.
stevegrant Posted 13 April, 2010 Share Posted 13 April, 2010 Vince was 12th man, wasn't he? Very surprised we went with Dawson at number 3 ahead of him, particularly if Dawson's not going to bowl.

Dawson is a batting all-rounder not a specialist batsman and I've seen nothing from him to suggest he will/can become one. No.3 is one of the most important slots in the batting line-up and needs to be occupied by an out and out specialist. Weston Saint Posted 13 April, 2010 Share Posted 13 April, 2010 Dawson is thought very highly by the club and coaches as a top order batsman at the present time. I suspect when Lumb comes back he will occupy the no 3 spot with McKenzie at 4 and Dawson at 5.
Lets B Avenue Posted 13 April, 2010 Share Posted 13 April, 2010 Vince was 12th man, wasn't he? Very surprised we went with Dawson at number 3 ahead of him, particularly if Dawson's not going to bowl. He was injured. According to Kevan James on Solent. Also, remember that Dawson was opening for the last 4-5 weeks last season, after Carbs got crocked. NI76 Posted 13 April, 2010 Share Posted 13 April, 2010 I think Vince pulled out at the last minute with a back problem, he was scheduled to play in place of Benham. When everyone is available I can't see Dawson or Benham making the Championship side which I reckon will look something like this: Adams Carberry Lumb Vince Mackenzie Ervine Pothas Mascarenhas Herath Ali Griffiths

Otherwise I agree your team. Don't forget Cork will be back soon as well although I expect him to have bit parts this season. Don't rule out Tomlinson or Benham either. Jones is coming on well and will also feature in a 4 day sometimes. However he has really been signed for next season. Vince & Briggs will continue to learn their trade in the 2nds along with Balcolme, Riazuddin, Howells, Woods.
