One of Ron's prized momentos was an old VHS video tape that he had of his four goal haul at Old Trafford in '69. John Sydenham gave him it donkey's years ago.

Anyway Ron's copy has been damaged and is no longer playable. He owns a DVD player these days as well as an old VCR.

So here's what I am appealing for, is it possible that anyone can help Ron acquire a DVD (or video tape) of that great occasion, especially with the Brian Moore 'Big Match' interview on it?? It would be great if any other Saints or Wales Ron Davies footage is available to put on it as well (long-shot I know). Even if someone could add some footage of the JPT, so that Ron could see our modern day Saints and our modern day Big Ron i.e. Lambo.

I always have to tell Ron how Saints are doing every week, he has only once had the chance to see them in years, but is always requesting updates...he always ends the conversation the same way "Saints fans are the best in the World!"

Might be worth dropping a line to ITV to see if they still have a copy, esp if you mention who it is for.

A lot of old 'Big Match' games are shown on ESPN Classic over here so they might have it to, although I think the games they show are from the 80s not the 70s.

Brilliant video :) Some awesome names on display. Forgive my stupidity but was there no such thing as a "back pass" back then? They seem to get away with it several times in the video! When was that rule introduced?

1992 - it does seem odd watching the goalie pick the ball up from a back pass!

Going even further back you were allowed to barge the keeper if he had the ball in his hands!

Thanks guys good to know! It does seem odd watching them pick the ball up doesn't it. Can see why the rule was introduced aswell, passing it to the keeper all the time would certainly slow the game down alot.

Coincidentally, the back-pass masters of the 1980s Liverpool haven't won a League title since.

You mean you missed out on all the tweaks to the rules on keepers holding the ball, bouncing it after a number of steps, then dropping and dribbling the ball and picking it back up, then being allowed to take one step backwards whilst holding the ball and all that stuff that went on before the backpass and 6 second rule came in ? It was great fun watching keepers trying to remember what they were allowed to do in the early matches of some seasons in the 70s and 80s...

And the old 4-step rule, for goalkeepers, has come and gone in the intervening time. I remember the first match I saw where the rule had been reversed, and the keeper was whizzing about of over the penalty area, with the ball. :)

I don't think that I have ever seen a goalie penalised for holding onto the ball too long - they rarely get rid of the ball within six seconds, though.

How come he couldn't make it for the JPT?

Incidently, he was mentioned in a few papers over the weekend as Grant Holt at Norwich equalled his goal scoring record of 30 in a season. (for Norwich)

Well for starters, the club could send Ron a copy of the JPT Final DVD, which I believe is coming out shortly. This friday, I think..?

They need to make sure its the correct format. Region Code is different in the US, if there is one set.

You can get multi region DVD players in walmart dirt cheap.

Jeez I'm getting old if there are fans who can't remember when back-passes were allowed...

How about remembering live footy on the telly without the facility to show replays and without a permanent display in the corner of the screen showing how much time has expired and what the score is?

:o

I feel slightly comforted that you must at least be older than me as I don't remember not ever seeing replays!

Further to the previous comment about Liverpool not winning the title since back-passes weren't allowed, Gary Ablett was certainly never the same player after 85% of his game was cruely taken away from him...

Well...do you want the full story, or the 'Reader's Digest' version which would be easier...He wasn't prepared ;-)

Thank you, that is a good idea. Will follow that lead, mind you it was actually the 60s FFS

That's terrific and I truly appreciate the 'heads-up'. Is there anyway someone can help with that process because with the 8 hour time difference, 6,000 miles and the whole 'across the ocean' thing it's a bit of a challenge from here?

"Tim, the goals are on you tube. Just enter Mu v saints 1969."

Spendid...however, I am also 'technically challenged' in that area and not sure how to con(per)vert it to DVD, thanks guys!!

There are a few free YouTube downloaders/converters to be found on t'internet. Can't remember the names of the sites off top of head. A quick google ought to do the trick. Cheers

Read the OP, Ron already has a DVD player, last thing he needs is to buy another one even if dirt cheap.

Ok keep your hair on ffs. If he (or someone else) can't get hold of a multi region DVD player, then it won't work will it? Simple as that. 'kin hell i'm so sorry I didn't follow the "rules" on here

Oh FFS, what sort of dicks are on this board these days? Do you actually know anything about who we are talking about here, his background, his current state? Nah, thought not. If you've got nothing useful to add, then why bother posting. Jeez.

you what? WTF are you on? What has Ron Davies health got to do with a f'king DVD? The fact is the JPT dvd from the megastore won't work unless the player is multi region. I'm sure Tim would sort that out. Time of the month is it? ****

Tim - if you haven't already got this sorted then check your mail.

Can someone post up the direct link to the youTube clip? Cheers.

He was providing info on Region 1 vs Region 2 DVDs. What useful info were you adding?

1. Download this flash video rip

2. Download DVD Flick

3. Install and open DVD flick.

- Change the destination folder (at the bottom of the screen) to somewhere easy to find.

- In "Project settings/General" change the target format to "NTSC"

- In "Project settings/Burning" tick "Create ISO image" & "Burn project to disk"

- Choose "Add title" on the right column of the main screen, and locate the video.

- Make sure you have a blank DVD in your drive, and choose "Create DVD".

DVD Flick will then encode the file, arrange into the correct file format for DVD, create a disk image (.iso - you can use this to burn more disks), and burn that image to disk.

4. Let me know how you get on!

TBF, I'd be very surprised if the JPT was region coded. Most of these sold-through-the-club things are region free. All of Saints Season Review DVDs were. Saints will probably expect to ship alot to expat fans who couldn't make it or find it on TV in their country.

Yeah good shout. i've just looked at the season review DVDs that i've got, and there's no region info on it so it should work fine.

Tim, how badly damaged is the VHS tape of the Old trafford game..? If it isn't too bad, then something can be done to ressurect it. This may be preferable, especially if it has much more material on it than there exists on the Google Video that is available worldwide.

Of course, there is also the Big Match interview with Ron Davies at the time, where He and Jimmy Hill talk about a new formation called 4-4-2..! This used to be available on Google Video, but is sadly missing now. I'm sure that is on Ron's tape too. Drop me a PM, and let's see what we can do.

I also couldn't make the JPT final, so if you could send that DVD to me also, that would be great thanks Tim. You are a true Saint. I'll PM you my postal address, thanks again!

Sure - send me your address brave boy...

Lots of changes in a few years!

Had me thinking, I got an old 60's style leather football, laces and rubber badder etc, out of the shed the other week. Compare it today's version and it really is a 'different ball game' now.

Anyone else remember the moment on a cold wet Winter's day when the ball would get lumped in and you had that micro-second of anticipation mixed with fear when you knew just what was coming with the old leather balls - like getting hit with a left hook.

.........by the way TT, the Bromley postman finally turned up the other day with Ron's cartoon of Brian O'Neill for me.......pass on our thanks to Ron ..........ta of course for your involvement.....it will get pride of place in my Saints shrine above my Dell West stand seats and Le God photos.

If anyone else is stuck for ideas for a present in the future get your orders into Ron, a real Saints legend.:supz:
