I always get confused (easily done I know) during away games when, whilst watching my team in dark blue shirts, the song 'YELLOWS, YELLOWS.........' is belted out. What's that all about? ;-)

COYS!

But what Saints fan in their right mind is gonna shout "Come on You Blues"?

These days we get (a 'kin boring) "Cuuuuuuummmm on yooooou Re-edsssssssssss.............." (and sleep), not the most inspiring of chants. At the ol' Dell it used rattle through the stands, shorter, punchier, ear-splitting at times, particularly if we were chasing a game late on. The 'You-Reds' bit was like one word...sung the right way.

Well that's not true, as watching the old United games and the Arsenal game on DVD it sounds exactly the same as it does now.

Maybe years and years ago it was faster (I thought faster was worse?) but to say that it changed because we came to St Marys is a bit silly.

There's a time for slower and a time for faster. If you're piling on the pressure chasing a game some droany ol' chant aint gonna put the fear of god into defenders...and when it was that scenario at the Dell that's what you got. I've never heard it with the same intensity at SMS.

Silly I know.

People will ignore it and still sing "reds", just as they still chant "YELLOWS" when we play in navy shirts this season.

Even though that was never a Southampton song! Nicked off Oxford Utd I believe? It was always "Come on you Yellows" from Wembley '76 till sometime in the late 90's.

Says Swindon at the Dell in the 90s up there somewhere ^^^^. As Oxford were well below our level (and miraculously still are even now) by then, and I know Swindon had a lame Brazilesque away kit in their season in the sun (1994) I'm inclined to go with the Swindon suggestion, but it could just as well have been Arsenal or Man U or Torquay and I have absolutely no ITK assistance on this.

Think you'll find Swindon under Hoddle spawned the 'Just Like Watching Brazil' chant in their Yellow kit. Oxford's League Cup winning team of '86 were the 'Yellows, Yellows'.

It was always "Come on you Saints" in the 60's Why it changed to Reds when we are red & white is anyones guess.

Lets get back to Saints please.

Completely agree....we're starting to sound like Manure wannabees. ;)

I do remember "Yellows, yellows, yellows... (etc)" and Come on you yellows" at Wembley in 1976.

Yes, but that was then, this is now! It's always "Come on You Saints", can never, ever recall shouting "Come on you Reds" smiley-confused013.gif

WTF??? I think this shows you haven't been to a game for a few years Chrisofthebees. Been going since 82 and it has always been Come on you Reds, never heard Saints.

Since when have we been known as the Reds? This chant was doing the rounds quite a lot yesterday, have I missed something as I thought we were the Saints?

Are Newcastle known as the blacks?

Apologies if this post has been dealt with before (so feel free to abuse me in the way only this forum knows) but I can't see why we're calling ourselves this when we've got a well established and distinctive nickname that goes right back to our heritage.

I agree. Why do people post COYR I always post COYS. Will we be singing Oh when the reds go marching in instead of Oh when the saints go marching in next. Reds are liverpool. :snipe:

Agree.

It used to **** me off when the "reds" bit started clate 70's/early 80's but I always assumed it was because that is what some sap had heard on the television from Anfield or OT.

I can add about another 8 to that....Were certainly yelling this at the first games I went to circa 1972 when I was a nipper.

That and S O UTH AMPT ON....sorry, the spaces or lack of between the letters are supposed to denote a beat. Or indeed, lack of....

Yeah, I remember that one. Hasn't been chanted for ages, as far as I know.

I prefer Saints to Reds, as well. There are plenty of Reds in English league football. There is only one Saints.

Well, in the English FL, anyway! I agree though, it should be Saints, rather than reds, then it could be sang at home and away instead of that dirge that is sung about a colour we don't even play in.
