Why risk Svennson tonight?

The signals are that Svensson will play tonight. I hope he doesn't - we need him for league games, not the mickey mouse cup. I know there will be cries of "he needs match fitness" but, in Svensson's case that is a false economy....I don't believe he's ever going to be 'match fit' on a long term basis so it's more important we keep him free from injury and use him selectively for the more important games (cue: "but, every game is important....")

Jan Poortvliet has taken a large squad with him for Saints' trip to the Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield for the 3rd round Carling Cup tie against Rotherham United tonight.

Captain Michael Svensson returns to the squad tonight having not been involved for the last three games. Lloyd James is also back after missing Saturday's goalless draw against Barnsley with an arm injury.

Czech international Rudi Skacel is involved for the first time this season, while American defender Kyle Davies remains in contention.

Kelvin Davis and Simon Gillett have not travelled, with Bartosz Bialkowski expected to deputise in goal.

Long term injury victims Jason Euell and Wayne Thomas remain out of action, while Oliver Lancashire completes the final game of his 3 match suspension.

Hosts Rotherham United are without full back Mark Lynch, who has suffered a dislocated shoulder and fellow defender Marc Joseph who also remains on the sidelines with a knock.

Millers' manager Mark Robins may re-call 28 year-old striker Mark Burchill to his side. The Scottish International has represented ten different clubs in England and Scotland since bursting on to the scene at Celtic 11 years ago.

Saints squad: Bialkowski, Forecast, James, Perry, Cork, Svensson, Mills, Skacel, Davies, Hatch, Schneiderlin, Surman, Wotton, Lallana, Wright-Phillips, Dyer, McGoldrick, Pekhart, John, Thomson, White, Paterson.

I also think its a bit odd.

He hasn't played the last 2 games.

He hasn't played any Carling Cup games so far because they don't think he can do 2 games in a week.

So are they expecting him to play the full 90 tonight and again at Donny on Saturday?

Will Cope has just said on the Radio: "I asked him how it was going and he [Killer] said: "I'll train when I can and I'll play when I can"".

A statement like that doesn't fill me with confidence.

My sister was sat next to Svennson at a wedding yesterday. Apparently his knee is fine, it gets sore after games and he will miss the norwich game tuesday as he has played more games than advised this soon back. Overall he is really pleased with it but feels he will improve loads more as the season goes on. He is confident he will last the season, saints will get better and stay up. He really rates lancashire as the next potential star in the team and couldnt really understand why they loaned out dyer.

Overall very positive and more confident than most of our fans.
